HERITAGE FINE ART AUCTION
THE BUYER Estimated PriceEstimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance).
Reserve PriceThe reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold.
Buyer’s PremiumBuyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.
BEFORE THE AUCTIONViewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale.
Condition ReportsCondition reports are available upon request. They are statements of opinion and should not be relied on as statements of definitive fact. Descriptions of property are not warranties and that lot is sold “as is”. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot.
RegistrationIf you are planning to participate in the auction, you will need to register with us at the registration desk, to complete a bidder registration form and to receive a bidding number to identify you if you are a successful bidder. Registration can be made during the viewing period or 30 minutes prior to the sell.
THE AUCTIONBiddingAll artworks are auctioned in consecutive numerical order. Bidding is done in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in incremental price raise. The auctioneer will accept bids from those present in the saleroom or absentee bidders participating by telephone or by written bid left with HERITAGE in advance. The lot being offered is usually illustrated on a screen.
Bidding IncrementsBidding generally opens below the low estimate and advances in the following increments:

If two or more parties leave identical bids, the first bid received by HERITAGE will take preference. Written bid forms are available 7 days before the sale and returned to HERITAGE within 24 hours before the sale or by fax to (021) 351 0707.
Telephone BidsIf you cannot attend the auction, HERITAGE will execute on behalf of your bid by telephone. Please make arrangements for this service at least 1 (one) day before the sale. It is advisable for you to leave your maximum bid, in case you are unable to reach us by phone.
Successful BidsSuccessful bidder will be indicated by the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer after reaching or exceeding the reserve price. HERITAGE will record the bidder number of the buyer. Under the auctioneer’s discretion bidding may be reopened.
Unsold lotsWhen a lot fails to sell, the auctioneer will not announce a bidder’s number. Lots unsold will be returned to the consignor usually after a week in case there are any post sale offers.

Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916. Arie Smit was a student of the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali.
Hindu temples and shrines are integral to Bali life and as such are a common theme in Smit’s work. It is typical of his work as it depicts community life in rural Bali, his most favoured subject matter. Facades of temple are often shown with human figures in front of them. Arie Smit uses a simple single vanishing point perspective to depict the temple surrounding. His special characteristics were seen by the use of his tropical rich colour on the object.

Agung Mangu Putra
Mangu Putra was born in Sangeh, Bali, on May 11, 1963. This exciting and very talented artist has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions throughout Indonesia and abroad. He received awards as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. His landscapes often present the sky, ocean, mountains and volcanoes. For him “Nature is more than simply beautiful. It is the very essence power. It is this power of nature that he tries to convey in his paintings.”
Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his search. The present lot painted about the landscape in Pecatu. Pecatu is a beach resort located in the southern peninsula of Bali, at the southwestern part of the peninsula. Pecatu is hilly with limestone cliffs isolating small, short beaches. For the local people it expressed hope and dreams come true with its luxurious clifftop views and remote location. With the narrow beach just below the cliff walls it is perfect for watching the sunset or the amazingly skilled surfers. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as identifiable objects. Some of Mangu’s works with abstract designs imply natural images, such as the character of water and the texture and colours of earth or stone.

Provenance: Private collection, Jakarta
RP 350.000.000 - 500.000.000 USD 25,550 - 36,500
Born in Bandung, 1918. He taught at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1957. Hendra took part in founding the Front Seniman (Artists Front) in Bandung, and Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists) in Yogyakarta. He also established the art club Pusaka Sunda together with Barli, Obon and some other friends. He is undoubtedly one of the Indonesia’s greatest pioneers of modern art and was considered to be one of the best and most versatile painters in Indonesia. He died in Bali 1983.
Hendra’s people are never passive victims of their faith; they are always depicted as active subjects. He took the daily lives of people subjects for his paintings and captured them movingly on canvas in his inimitable style. Though Hendra’s art was, from the very beginning focused towards celebrating common people and their struggle that depicts his deep feeling and irony inspiring perspective of life’s most fundamental issue: freedom and hunger, Hendra also love the land and paint some in his several themes. Hendra later paintings are melancholic and emotional as a result of the hardship that he experienced during his thirteen years in Bandung Kebon Waru prison. During his imprisoned time he painted some of his most dreamlike, vibrant and emotional works. He illustrates the sadness and the mystery in a brighter, more saturated, expressionistic and abstract.

Dipo AndyDipo works are considered belongs to Andy Warhol’s pop art style that focused the attention in imaging object. The differences are seen in Dipo’s painting that uses acrylic on canvas medium, while Warhol uses graphic technique. Dipo seems always have a strong interest in popular images. He often uses popular figures such as soccer star David Beckham, the singer Madonna and others as the subjects. His images are shape by thin lines of nuanced colors to produce portraits out of emphatic lines of different colors. Then he assigned numbers or barcodes. This gives us the impression that Dipo has interest in the issues of industry, technology and the cultural values involved.

Alit SembodoAlit Sembodo was born in Magelang, Central Java, 10th August 1973. He took his formal school at the Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta where he won the Patisara Affandi Adi Karya Awards in 1999. Alit’s paintings have shown the tendency to become a media for social commentary. He does not purely make social criticism of the wisdom or practices of the ruling politics. He only goes as far as demonstrating the problems of society through the language of his paintings, according to his own perceptive and perception.
Most of his works demonstrate strong characteristics, narrative and descriptive crowd in all kinds of poses and scenes that filled every corner of the canvas. He never left the canvas empty. The canvas seems full with parade of masses like a colossal theater performance. Perhaps this has become Alit’s concern towards all kinds of social problems amongst the populace. He seems does not merely make social criticism towards the ruling politics, but he only goes to describe the condition in his painting through his own perspective and perception.

AffandiBorn in Cirebon, March 11, 1907. Affandi was considered as the Indonesian Artist par excellent. He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masyarakat (Community’s Artists Association (1946) and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists Association) in 1947, Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic idiom for Indonesia. In the early of 1950s he traveled to India for a grant from Indian Government, he held several one-man shows in several Indian Cities, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammerskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977) and an Indonesian Government the First Class Merit (1978). His works were exhibited in major exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and were also be acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world since the 1950s.
Affandi’s work exhibits a distinct rhythm full of emotional intensity by squeezing paint directly onto the canvas. The expressionist painter characteristically has an urgency to simultaneously grab the movement of the moment he wants to describe, along with capturing the textures of the object, a drive that often leads him to work much more passionately compared to the naturalists, the realists, or even the impressionists. He directly expressed his pure emotion in the form of strong wild lines dominated with black hues. Affandi’s strokes expressed his wild, vicious, and discontentment towards the fixed form of expression. He always paints in simultaneous movement and never tied with certain kind of forms. There are several plan themes that captured his interest in paintings; banyan tree, bamboo tree, sun flower, coconut palm and clove tree. Sometimes they combined with mountain landscape in the background with sun object that shimmering the tree. All of the objects were drawn as the results from Affandi’s experience in travelling to places he often visited. He observed the object and directly put into canvases using his wild fingers and rough strokes.

Oil on board: 100 x 50 cm Signed in chinese character, lower left
Provenance:Private collection, Jakarta
RP 350.000.000 - 500.000.000USD 25,550 - 36,500
Born in Canton, China, 1913, Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”.
Lee Man Fong is famous painter who captures gold fishes in magnificent way. Some gold fishes are swimming freely in the space of an aquarium, still with his essential element by using the light, reflecting the sun’s radiance, Lee success to bring all the goldfishes as a depiction of calmness. In Lee Man Fong paintings, light is of prime importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented in this lot. The background, unlike the flat, void spaces of Chinese paintings, is likewise illuminated by an almost mysterious glow of white sunlight. Therefore the subjects, reflecting the sun’s radiance, seem also to be lit from the back, creating the effect of “glowing silhouettes”.
