With a strong emphasis on active learning, pupils will learn how and why the Antonine wall was built in Scotland. They will use science and technology skills to re-create a model of the wall and investigate what materials and tools the Romans used in its construction as well as the impact on local tribes. Original Roman artefacts will be explored as pupils become ‘history detectives’ to discover what life was like for a Roman soldier posted at the Wall. The weapons and armour of the soldiers will be examined and compared. The session is completed by an in-role visit to the Antonine Wall World Heritage site in Callendar Park. On their march to the wall, pupils dressed as Roman Auxiliaries will carry out the tortoise manoeuvre (testudo) to fend off a Caledonian attack. (Welly boots recommended)!

This interactive workshop uses role play to explore what it would have felt like to be an evacuee leaving from Clydebank to be billeted in a strange area far from home and family in WW2.

The re-enactment takes place in Clydebank Evacuation Centre where pupils are issued with accurate documentation. A ‘train journey’ to the billeting area is undertaken where, on arrival, pupils will interact with their Landlady and local Billeting Officer. After the role play session, pupils will investigate and handle original wartime artefacts to explore what home front jobs were carried out by people in Falkirk to support the war effort.SOC 2-01a | SOC 2-04a | SOC 2-06a

What was working life like in the kitchen and laundry at Callendar House in the Victorian times? Pupils will apply for a job at Callendar House and dress in period costume to work with the cook in the original 19th century kitchen. Using traditional Victorian methods to make dessert for the Forbes family, domestic innovations of the day will be put to the test. Comparisons between old and new technologies will be made during the session. Pupils will also experience a Victorian washday with the Laundry maid and try out the posser and washboard. Original clothes of the time will be handled to examine fabric types, style and how they were made. The session ends with an investigation of original domestic objects. Pupils will work in groups to decide what the objects are made from and how they would be used.
