Welcome To the School Newspaper!

Welcome to the first edition of the Hermosa Drive Elementary school newspaper! Our first paper is very exciting, with five headlines for you to read: sports, world news, class spotlight, the big award, and page of fun. Sports Jog-a-Thon Winners by Grace Kim and Evelyn Paik

The Jog-a-thon was a great success and many people won! We want to honor those people for their great victory by announcing their names in our first edition of the newspaper. The prizes for the top runners are amazing medals that were awarded after the run. Sadly, we don’t have enough space in the newspaper for everyone, so we will only announce first place of each grade/gender. Here are the lower grade top students. For kindergarten runners: First place girl winners: Evelyn Morales Anzures and Carmella Pinney. First place boy winners: Jacob Oxen and Kellan Tucker. In first grade the top boy is Xavier Coronel, and for girls, the winner is Juliet Laven. For the second grade winners, we have Brooklyn Coulthurst for the girls, and in a triple tie, Kaden Tucker, and Blake and Carter Lamping. In 3rd grade, there are two winners. Ethan Lueck and Abigail Murphy. The upper graders winners are as follows; 4th grade girls winner is Lauren Barrett and Erick Cervantes won first place for the 4th grade boys. 5th grader Dylan Cobbs won the award for the boys and Lucy Lamping for the girls. Finally, in 6th grade we have Maya Kew-Layton, and a tie with Christopher Soto and Trent Palmer for the boys. The person with the most laps in the entire school is Dylan Cobbs with 39 laps in 30 minutes! Congratulations to everyone for winning!  Top Pacers by Rachel Buchi   We have some fast runners here at Hermosa! Pacers are when you run from one side of the court to the other, counting the laps as you go. If you are too slow to run to the other side you’re out. You have two chances to miss. The other runners keep going until there is one person left.   Here are the current top pacers in each grade:   The 2nd grade top runner is Kaden with 76 laps. The 3rd grade top runner is Ethan with 74 laps.  The 4th grade top runner is Kylee with 60 laps.  The 5th grade top runner is Lucy with 72 laps.  The 6th grade top runner is Mia with 64 laps.  If you want to be a Top Pacer, try your hardest and pace yourself!

After School Sports

The after school sport right now is baseball/softball, and we have interviewed Mr Bautista. Let’s see what he has to say. “After school baseball is all about having fun and playing. It’s a team sport so it helps build teamwork,” says Mr. Bautista. “I might choose teams or the kids might get to pick, but in general it’s all about having fun.”

Lunchtime Sports by Kalista Kollmansberger and Audrey Bogard

We also interviewed Mr. Bautista to find his take on lunch time sports. (We are in the semi-finals of lunchtime dodgeball).

Q: Why did you decide to choose dodgeball?

A: “I decided to do dodgeball because it’s a game students don’t get a chance to do often, and I’d like to introduce it. It also works really well with the hockey rink.”

Q: What are some sports we can expect in the future?

A: “The next lunchtime sport will be soccer, football, and finally hockey.”

We also interviewed some of the students to get their take on lunch time sports. Some of the things that they said were, “I really like lunchtime sports!” Another said, “Lunch time sports are really fun! I can try sports I never tried before, such as dodgeball.”

Classroom Spotlight  by Elliott Jang  Today’s featured classroom is… Ms. Miller's Classroom (Room 16). I’d like to announce what’s new, and what’s happening in room 16. It’s ClassCraft! Ms. Miller has introduced a new teaching system called Classcraft! This uses ability points for healing, or giving ability points to others. It all depends on your role: a mage, healer, or warrior. Each student gets into 3 random groups, called triads, consisting of a healer, mage, and warrior. These triad groups are widely used for random groups, like junior great books (a reading prprogram) or other class related activities. This is the Class Craft home page: As you level up, you can unlock new outfits and buy them with GP, or gold points. The powers sections is what I can use for AP, ability points. This can help with education because it can give you points for completed assignments, and the

teacher has full control over points, so he/she can take away HP, AP, or XP, but also give you points based on your behavior during class. It also helps as an education tool using quests, which are assignments you do that can give you points. When you finish a quest, you get some XP and GP.  If you have 0 HP, then you get a sentence, which is a consequence you have to do, like detention. When you complete your sentences, then you can get revived and will be back in the game. When someone falls in battle (has 0 HP) then the whole team gets affected, or the healer can just heal the person who fell in battle.   (HP: Health points. AP: Ability points. GP: Gold Points. XP- experience.)  Vote for the next classroom spotlight here Spotlight Survey

The Big Award  by Costa Gomez Bueno    Child obesity is a real problem. One in three children of the ages 2 to 19 are obese, but luckily for us, some groups have formed to try to stop this. The Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools program is one of those amazing groups. The Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools program encourages schools to give healthy options. They encourage healthy foods, lots of exercise, and most importantly fun.   One day Mrs. Ruiz was watching TV, and she discovered the Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools program was giving out awards to healthy schools.

She informed Ms. Ramirez, who was delighted to participate. They give out three awards: bronze, silver, and gold. These awards are awarded to all schools that qualify, and is a great achievement.   To win an award the school had to meet a list of requirements for each level. To win gold we had to have 150 minutes of PE per week. Although we only give 120 minutes of PE, we exceeded with ease, thanks to our morning walks on the green line. Our cafeteria food, our salad bar, even the fact that we grow some of our own food in gardening club helped us greatly. Our lunch time sports, our after school sports, also our harvest of the month program, contributed. These things and many more helped us pass hundreds of requirements.   Yet, we failed one requirement. Our food fundraisers were unhealthy, and the food we sell at events is unhealthy too. So, as one would do Ms. Ramirez contacted the PTA to see if they could change that. To her dismay she found out that the PTA raises 20,000 dollars from our food fundraisers! This is a lot of money that helps our school run, and we could not afford to lose it. Ms. Ramirez will be slowly changing this with little things, like our delicious, and healthy smoothies.   Even though we did not get gold, we did get silver! Ms. Ramirez is very proud of this silver award, but some of the teachers have told me that it’s bittersweet. I agree, because we all are happy to get an award, but we still wanted gold. Next year, we will work harder than ever to achieve this goal.    World News    by Audrey Bogard

A man by the name of Steve Geddes from New Hampshire broke a world record for the largest pumpkin grown, ever. The pumpkin weighed 2,528 pounds or 1,146.68 kgs. Steve won a prize of $6,000. It is not to be mistaken with the heaviest pumpkin. It fell roughly 100 pounds from the heaviest. In 2016, a Belgian man named Mathias Willemijns set the current record for heaviest pumpkin grown. The pumpkin weighed 2,624 pounds or 1,190.23 kgs. which makes Steve’s pumpkin the largest pumpkin in the world, and the
