5. FIRST GENERAL FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS • Severe Traffic/Environmental Problems during Tourist Period • Main Causes:
− Irregular Configuration and Insufficient Capacity of Main Street Network
− Poorly Designed and Regulated Intersections − Lack of Traffic Management & Police Enforcement − Shortage of On- & Off-street Parking Supply − Absence of Controlled On-street Parking − Illegally Parked Vehicles at Critical Locations
(Intersections, Narrow Streets, Sidewalks etc.)− Lack of Street Markings & Regulatory/Information Signs − Increased Number and Use of Passenger Cars & Motorcycles,
mainly Rented − Lack of Inter-municipal Public Transport
• Short-term, Low-cost Improvements Can Easily be Implemented to Fully Exploit the Present Street Network
• More Drastic and Costly Mid- & Long-term Improvements are Necessary to Cope with the Expected Continuous Increase of Tourist Traffic
