Welcome to

The Acre Cars Stadium

Welcome to our first home evening fixture this season: a league clash against Chalfont St Peter. This is a game we have been looking forward to since the summer when our new floodlights were installed and we are sure that you will enjoy the spectacle of seeing Hertingfordbury Park illuminated like never before. Welcome to our visitors from Buckinghamshire who have had a good start to the season despite losing their first league game of the season last Saturday at Ware. We, of course, had an even more disappointing weekend but a midweek fixture is an ideal way to refocus minds after a bad defeat. Ben is sure to re-jig the team this evening after such a heavy loss but he is also mindful that patience is a virtue in building a young new team and there will be no panic-buying or wholesale changes. The home crowd showed their loyalty and patience in backing the lads to the end on Saturday and that is something the club greatly appreciates. We look forward to rewarding that patience, hopefully starting this evening.

Today’s Opponents

Chalfont St Peter AFC History The club was formed in 1926 and played local junior football from its ground on Gold Hill Common. 1948 saw a move to the Great Western Combinaon and a year later the club moved to its present locaon, although the picturesque name of Mill Meadow belies its origins as a refuse p. As the club developed off the field thanks to the support of many volunteers so success began to arrive on the field and in 1952 the first silverware was won, the Berks & Bucks FA Intermediate Cup. Senior status followed and progress through the Parthenon League, London League and Spartan League followed. The early 1970’s were difficult for the club but a move into the Athenian league saw a change in fortunes. The 1980’s, now in the Isthmian League, brought some consistency in league performances and some successful campaigns in the FA Cup and FA Vase. The 1990’s was another difficult decade, culminang in a low point of two successive boom places.2001/02 saw a rebuild under Marn Dean with a good start to the season but a subsequent falling away saw them finish 14th. The lower echelons became the accustomed territory for Saints for several seasons unl Dean’s departure at the end of the 2003/04 season.Managing Chalfont to victory in the Berks & Bucks Under-18 Challenge Cup was a young Danny Edwards. His reward was to be handed the reins of the First Team for the new season. And so began a rollercoaster ride of success and near misses that connued unl just recently. A restructuring within the Isthmian league at the end of the 2005/06 season saw Saints moving to the Spartan South Midlands Premier League. 2006/07 saw a top half finish in their first season in the Spartan and a trophy for the cabinet, the Wycombe Senior Cup, secured with a 7-0 win over Downley Albion at the Wycombe Wanderers ground. 2007/08 was a hugely successful season. Danny Edwards was developing an excing squad and the style of play was both entertaining and successful. Good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Vase came together with a Final appearance in the Premier Division Cup. Topping them all was winning the Challenge Trophy with a 2-0 win over Brimsdown Rovers. A close three-horse race in the league saw Saints pipped at the post into runners-up spot. 2008/09 was about building on the standards set in the previous season. And it didn’t disappoint. Some top scalps in the FA Cup heralded a season of cup runs. The FA Vase was the crowning glory, with the Saints making it all the way to the semi-final and being heart breaking seconds away from winning the right to play at Wembley. Saints were in the hunt for the league tle all the way to the last week of the season but the fixture congeson caused by the cup successes began to tell and they couldn’t quite make it across the line, eventually finishing a brave third. Losses in the finals of the Challenge Trophy and the Wycombe Senior Cup took a lile bit of the shine off what was a brilliant season for the club.

Page 14: HERTFORD TOWN FC · TD_A5_Flyer.pdf 1 29/07/2019 09:48:12. ... This is a game we have been looking forward ... Saints moving to the Spartan South Midlands Premier League. 2006/07

Expectaons were high going into season 2009/10 aer going close to promoon in the two previous seasons. A slow start and a nightmare run of losses in October saw the tle chase wobble and rapid exits from all cup compeons. But an incredible run of form with just one defeat in 23 took Saints to the top to the pile where they became the target for other teams’ top performances and it wasn’t unl they were overtaken by Aylesbury in the last two games that they had to sele for the runners-up spot again. At the start of 2010/11, the aim was clear: promoon was the number one target. Geng off to an incredible start in notching up seventeen straight wins, Saints grabbed top spot and refused to relinquish it for the enre season, never being less than four points clear at any stage. The focus was clear and any progress in the cups was quickly curtailed. Such was the dominance in the league, the champagne corks popped with five games to spare as the tle was secured. The curtain was brought down on the record breaking season and their five year stay in the Spartan League by winning the Challenge Trophy for an unprecedented league and cup double. For the 2011/12 season, life was expected to be a trial for Saints yet they made a bright start in their new environs and quickly acclimased. For long periods they were genuine contenders but a poor end to the season, combined with the loss of totemic striker Charlie Struon to the professional ranks, saw them fall away into the mid table. A strong run in the FA Cup illuminated the 2012/13 season. An impressive win at Carshalton Athlec earned a e against Conference side Bishop’s Stor ord. A draw at Mill Meadow set up a replay that ulmately proved a step too far. Playing with style, Saints were to earn the Division’s Fair Play tle but couldn’t reach the play-off posions. With a lack of firepower, the 2013/14 was a disappoinng way to mark Danny Edwards’ tenth season in charge. The lack of goals consigned the side to a mid-table finish despite boasng one of the meanest defences. 2014/15 saw the goals begin to return. A promising start saw the side hard to beat but too many draws held them back. A run in the FA Cup, highlighted by a deserved win in front of a baying Keering crowd was coupled with a strong run in November that saw the club in a playoff posion but from such heights, a miserable New Year run saw them tumble down into relegaon territory. It took a stubborn recovery in April to ensure eventual safety. 2015/16 was a highwater mark for Saints in their current run in the Southern League. Pung aside an early exit in the FA Cup Saints went on to head the table at New Year and looked set for their first lt at the play offs, if not more. Sadly they repeated the poor run of results thereaer and fell away to finish sixth. Sll an excellent all -round season as Tony Mendy secured top scorer honours in the division with 30 goals. In contrast, season 2016/17 was possibly the poorest in over a decade. A storming start to the season saw Saints in top spot throughout August but the hole le by the departed Mendy was never filled and as the goals dried up so the tumble down the

Page 15: HERTFORD TOWN FC · TD_A5_Flyer.pdf 1 29/07/2019 09:48:12. ... This is a game we have been looking forward ... Saints moving to the Spartan South Midlands Premier League. 2006/07

table gathered pace. Some poor signings added to the problems and the second half of the season delivered just four wins and for a while relegaon was a real possibility before safety was finally achieved. 2017/18 was one of our most excing seasons in the Southern League, our seventh, with the side in playoff contenon right up unl the final few games. Our peerless record against those sides who ulmately claimed the top places, with just the single defeat in 12 games, including a notable double against champions Beaconsfield Town, underlined how compeve a side we were. Sll struggling for goals, it was our defence that led the way with 16 clean sheets. It was a season that saw evergreen skipper Alan Hedley pass the 500 games mark and manager Danny Edwards reach 700 games in charge. Saints embrace change but enjoy stability at the same me. 2018/19 saw Saints return to the Isthmian League aer 12 seasons as football was restructured. An inconsistent defence and a shortage of goals ensured Saints were unable to escape the mid-table places. Towards the end of the season, Danny Edwards signalled his wish to step down from the role he had held with such disncon and Saints had to begin the process of finding a new manager.

The dawn of the 2019/20 season sees Saints, not only with a new management team, led by Finlay Johnson, another young manager being given the opportunity to prove himself at the higher level, but also a wholly new squad as players followed Edwards to new pastures. The opportunity to build something new from the ground up promises to be an excing one.

Talk of the Town

The future’s bright… Tonight may provide you with your first look at our new floodlights in all their glory. In May the club replaced their 1950s 8 tower floodlights with a new modern 4 pole installation with multidirectional lights costing £60,000. The new lighting levels- 339 on the lux test- far exceed those required for the National League. This has been done in both the interests of safety of the players and the spectators and brings the club in line with current and future FA and league requirements. The existing 8 towers were acquired some 63 years ago and were second-hand then! Night time games at Hertingfordbury Park will be transformed. The replacement program was made possible by a grant for part of the cost from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF) which is funded by the Premier League. The FSIF awards capital grants to clubs from the Football League down to the lower levels of the FA National League System to improve safety at their stadia and to enable them to satisfy The FA’s ground grading requirements. Hertford Town FC has also installed a new emergency light system for crowd safety and an upgraded and improved public address system which can reach all parts of the stadium. This enhancement program positions the club well for the long-term future.

Arsenal coming to the Acre Cars Stadium!

We are proud to be hosting the Community Football Tournament on Sunday October 13th; an inclusive 7 a side competition featuring teams from Arsenal, Watford, Cheshunt and ourselves. The tournament, which is backed by Hertfordshire Police and East Herts Council, is free to attend and runs from 12 to 2.30. As well as the football there will be hot food, ice cream and a raffle so it promises to be a great family afternoon out.

Non-league matters

Today’s visitors Chalfont are notable for having had the same manager for some 15 years prior to this season before Danny stepped down last summer. Having gone through three managers last season this is a degree of stability we at Herord can be quite envious of! Chalfont are not alone in terms of managerial stability in the non-league game. Paul Doswell led Suon United for over a decade before resigning this year whilst John Coventry (East Thurrock) and Jason Ainsley (Spennymoor) are sll in charge aer being appointed in 2007. An even longer snt in charge of 22 years was achieved by Gordon Bartle at Wealdstone between 1995 and 2017, which this season should be surpassed by Neil Cugley at Folkestone Invicta who has led the Kent ouit since 1996, overseeing over 1,000 games. Even Neil, though, has some way to go to surpass the longevity of Roly Howard who led Marine for 33 years and nearly 2,000 games between 1972 and 2005.

In the professional game, where boardroom paence is becoming a rare commodity, it is worth nong that many of the great UK clubs have been built on a tradion of managerial stability. Wenger and Ferguson’s reigns at Arsenal and Man U are obvious examples but it is less well-known that the dominance of the ‘old firm’ in Scotland was born of even-longer managerial tenures. Bill Smith ran Rangers for 34 years between 1920 and 1954 and Willie Maley was in charge of Celc between 1897 and 1940: an astonishing 43 years. Exceeding even this though, was the managerial reign of legendary French coach Guy Roux at Auxerre between 1961 and 2005: some 44 years. I would love to think Ben Herd will sll be managing us in 2063 but I somehow doubt it!

Match Report

Ware 3 Hertford Town 1 (Velocity Trophy)

A combination of clinical Ware finishing and sloppy Hertford defending saw the hosts come out on top in this derby cup clash under the Wodson Park lights. Despite some good spells of possession the Blues went into the break two down after Ware forced home two close range strikes resulting from slack marking. After the restart the tie was effectively sealed in a passage of paly that summed up the game. Dane Batt had a good shot saved but, from the resultant corner, Ware managed to break away and score the third. Dane capped a fine personal display with a cracking left foot strike on 77 minutes but it proved too late for a comeback.

Hertford Town 1 Westfield 9

It was an afternoon to forget for the Blues as they were comprehensively dismantled at home by a dominant Westfield, surely destined for promotion this season. In a dismal start Hertford were three down in 17 minutes, including two from the impressive Elijah Simpson. Hertford managed to get into the game and maintain some decent possession for the remainder of the half and start of the second but collapsed after an hour and the Woking outfit ran riot. Luke Gymer scored a good consolation goal on the break but there was little else for the home crowd to cheer; although, to their credit, the ‘stable enders’ did back the boys to the bitter end.
