Thank you for participating in our workshops to develop ideas for Herzog Park Natural Play Area. The concepts displayed here are inspired by our work together and the nature of the area. Please note: the concepts will be further developed to tender and checked for health and safety. What we can build is subject to that process and our budgets. In the second set of workshops, the children met us on site. We did an exercise, “Draw what you can see and What could be” This helps the ideas be more site specific to Herzog Park.

In the final workshops the children work together to build ideas, and present these ideas to their fellow classmates.

Workshops began by asking the children questions about their ideas of “Having Fun + Helping Nature” Drawing was encouraged so every child could answer. The scrolls were given, so the children would know their thoughts and ideas were valued, whilst a fast pace encouraged, with emphasis based on fun and ideas, rather than skill in drawing.

In some schools we drew an elevation on the board, amalgamating all ideas on one image.

Play valueThe artist took hold of the subjects sheep and flock on different levels and abstrac-ted it with flair. The thick, shaggy wool, the softly shaped ears and the gawky feet of a sheep are transposed as well as the patient and humble appearance which a sheep has while grazing. Even if the movement does not immediately bring to mind an association with sheep, the fine, wobbling of the body reflects the undulations of a walking flock. When standing in a group, these art objects evoke associations with flocks of sheep, unity in variety, and even - due to successful abstraction - one‘s relationship with nature. The sheep is equally suitable for an artistically designed play point in urban environments. In leisure areas, the animals can be used as amusing, alternative seats for young and old, which promote relaxation and ease by their movement. Children‘s spaces get an unmistakeable identity from a flock of sheep.
