HP and SAP MaxAttention™: A magnificent partnership

From its formation in 1939, the Hewlett Packard Company (HP) grew to become an icon of the high-tech industry and one of the world’s largest providers of hardware, software, and services to individuals and organizations of all sizes. Recently, HP split into two separate companies: HP Inc. (HPI) to continue providing consumer favorites including personal computers and printers, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to focus on products and services for the enterprise.

Decades ago HP chose SAP® software to run its business as well as a variety of SAP services to keep the network optimized. For really critical and difficult tasks, the firm for many years used SAP MaxAttention™ services, the highest level of collaboration and co-innovation available from SAP. Recently, HP asked the SAP MaxAttention team to address a trio of issues that illustrate the types of contributions these services have made to the company over the years:

• Speed up the delivery of business-critical reports that were taking days or even weeks, to improve responsiveness to market events and alleviate frustration among business users

• Restore stability to an SAP software system that is used to generate price quotations to customers; the system runs a version of SAP applications that is no longer supported, but the business could not afford the downtime an upgrade would have entailed and was therefore “throwing hardware at the problem”

• Support the company split by replicating 40 production SAP software systems so that each of the new companies had its own set going forward, while keeping downtime to two days or less; in a previous replication of nonproduction SAP software systems, downtime had lasted 10 days

The reports that needed acceleration were gener-ated by the SAP Business Warehouse application running on an Oracle database. HP began by having its own IT staff examine the software for improve-ment opportunities. When this attempt did not help, they and their advisors from SAP MaxAttention agreed that the best solution was to migrate SAP Business Warehouse from Oracle to the SAP HANA® platform. The SAP team partnered with HP to per-form the migration, which wrapped up on schedule, within budget, and on goal in every respect. Business users are now getting their reports much sooner and experiencing substantially better response times.

The pricing system had become increasingly unstable with the growth of HP’s business and, with it, demands to create price quotes. HP began by trying hardware upgrades, but when that approach fell short, the company again enlisted help from

SAP MaxAttention. The HP and SAP team optimized queues and system parameters and soon restored stability, allowing the business to resume issuing price quotes without reliability concerns or excessive hardware costs. Again they achieved all their objectives.

Downtime had to be kept to an absolute minimum during the replication of the 40 production SAP systems and subsequent cleanup required by the company split. The team from SAP MaxAttention therefore began by conducting a workshop for HP management so that it could make a fully informed decision on the best approach to take. SAP then partnered closely with HP IT to implement the chosen approach. They met the aggressive three-month timetable for the split and held downtime to a day and a half, less than the two-day maximum specified in the service-level agreement.

Future plans

The business process improvements introduced by SAP MaxAttention have allowed HP to reduce its dependence on key employees for operations, freeing them up to contribute in more innovative, high-value ways involving SAP HANA, the cloud, and enterprise mobility. The improvements are also helping to save costs. For example, more-accurate information delivered more quickly is helping the company reduce inventory carrying costs.

The team from SAP MaxAttention at HP was instrumental in helping the company achieve advanced certification from SAP for its Customer Center of Expertise (COE). In its announcement, SAP stated that HP received the highest score globally of all applicants and overachieved in most of the certification categories. HP ultimately won a Customer COE of the Year award from SAP.

SAP S/4HANAHPE and HPI are now two separate companies pursuing their separate markets, but they still have much in common, including reliance on SAP applications for running their businesses and on SAP MaxAttention for keeping the software opti-mized. “The next big step in our plans at HPE is to move to the SAP S/4HANA suite, and HPI may do so as well,” says Sumit Bana, senior manager at HPE. “We expect it will help us simplify our IT landscape, shorten our financial close cycles, and introduce many other benefits – especially since our SAP MaxAttention team will be right by our side during the implementation. They always do a great job, and so we plan to continue our partnership with them for the foreseeable future.”
