Hey, Mama!Welcome to this devotional planner! I am so happy to visit with you for a few minutes on a regular basis, sharing encouragement, Bible verses, and helpful reminders about why we do this thing we do: HOMESCHOOLING. The journey is not easy; we will have some hard days. But it’s also very fun, and I promise that as you teach, you will learn so much yourself!

Homeschooling is a deep investment of time and energy, and any time we wholeheartedly commit to a calling, we reap the rewards of that labor. We see resulting fruit, but it might take a while. Our children are worth it; they are already such a reward—a gift—straight from the Lord! But admittedly, they can also be a little hard-headed at times.

For that reason, my sincere hope is that this planner/journal will not only help your homeschooling become more organized and the planning of your day more simplified, but that it would also help you keep your eyes on the One who has called you to it. There is no perfect parent—and no perfect child, either. Each of us needs grace. We all are fallible and fragile, can become easily discouraged, and remain in need of understanding and patience from those who love and influence us.

Our children are always watching, and they see us as their first glimpse of what Christ is to His own children. How does the Lord admonish His own? He chastens us, teaches us through His Word, rewards us for obedience, challenges us to do better, and instructs us to have the mind of Christ by reading and applying His Word, chasing after wisdom, loving correction, and taking great joy in our salvation.

These are the things we want to keep in mind as parents while we raise up our own children in the admonition of the Lord. For the Christian, when considering how we should educate our children, the term “homeschooling” has its own meaning. Academics are very important, certainly, but there is something even higher that we do because of our love for the Lord and because of the deep urgency that we have only so much time in this child’s life to influence him or her for Christ.

“Discipleship” may be the word we need to keep in mind. We disciple our children in God’s Word, teaching good character, modeling in our everyday life the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Can we effectively demonstrate these fruits without the Lord? No, as they originate from Him.

My greatest advice to a Mama would be that she become a student of the Word. Read your Bible, get into a good Bible study at church, understand how to apply the Word in context. Then you can model Christ effectually, even while not perfectly. But it’s okay; He takes care of the rest.

We serve a gracious, good Father, and He has a plan for you, Mama—and for your children, too. He loves to bless us and His objective is to make us more like Him. We can only do that if we study who He is and what He says. You find that in the Good Book—the one He authored. So read it.

Creating an Academic TranscriptAn academic transcript is the documentation of your student’s high school courses and grades. When planning your student’s high school courses, it is helpful to discuss with him (or her) plans for after high school graduation. You will then be able to tailor the course selections to fit the goal of the student. If your student does not know what to pursue post high school, a general education track is the best choice.

After discussing post-high school plans with your student, familiarize yourself with your state requirements for high school credits and graduation requirements. Home School Legal Defense Association has information about state homeschool laws on its website at www.HSLDA.org. You can also read about homeschooling the high schooler at www.HSLDA.org/highschool.

If your student wants to attend a four-year college following graduation, you will want to explore course recommendations from four-year institutions. Many of these colleges and universities require certain electives and core courses in the high school years. You will also want to consider outside activities that will enhance your student’s college application. Your student will also need to participate in SAT or ACT testing for most college applications.

If your student is interested in community college or trade school, you may find dual-enrollment opportunities that will allow you to build a high school transcript with college credits. Most community colleges and trade schools use placement testing for students versus SAT or ACT scores and high school transcripts. You will need to do your research to determine the best path for your student.

What do I include in an academic transcript?You need to document the year the course was completed, the course name, course grade, and total number of credits earned. You will include core subjects, such as math, English, science and history. You can also include electives, such as music, art, Bible, home economics, foreign language, physical education, etc. You have more freedom in choosing electives for your high school student. Please refer to your state requirements for core subjects and electives.

It is recommended that you create a transcript record for each of the four years of high school. Record-keeping will be easier if you update the student’s record each school year.

How do I give a credit?Most high school textbooks are written as a full year course of study, so the student would earn one credit for a book that is completed and tests passed. There are some courses written specifically as a one-semester course, and as such, those courses would earn a half (.5) credit.

How do I give a final grade?You will need to determine your grading scale for each course. You will need to log quiz and test grades to determine a final average.

What are cumulative grades?At the end of the high school career, you can give a cumulative grade point average and total number of credits earned.

Who signs my student’s academic transcript?In most cases, your homeschool principal or administrator will sign the academic transcript and date it when completed.

Think of your student’s high school transcript as their resume to their future. Document courses taken and grades, so you can create a document that will show on one page what your student has accomplished in high school.

Homeschool Purpose

Hey, Mama!What does homeschooling mean to you? Are you doing it because it’s a current popular trend or just convenient? Maybe you travel a lot or your kids have special needs? Is it just a means to an end? Were your children being bullied in public school and you thought this would be the solution? So maybe it’s just temporary. Or perhaps you were homeschooled yourself and it’s simply a way of life or all you know.

But what if things change? What if you no longer travel or your kids start asking to enroll at the local government school? What if they want to see what classrooms look like, make different friends, and experience a daily couple of rides on that big, long yellow bus? What, then?

Right now you are homeschooling or getting ready to start. The reason why you bought this book is because you want to be prepared and encouraged in your homeschooling journey. But Mama, think hard about the reasons behind the surface-level why homeschool.

If you are in Christ, if you love the Lord, then you love His Word. You cherish and follow His instructions. You also recognize that He has a plan for your life, and the lives of your children, too. He directs your path, placing your feet firmly and securely in His will. Simply walk in His love. You don’t have to be confused or second-guess yourself—not if you are in the Lord, pursuing His plans for you, daily. You can walk confidently, knowing you have made the right decision to keep your children at home where they can be instructed without distraction, without ridicule or scoffing.

This life is so short! It’s full of trials and testings. May we be found faithful, not double-minded, but with razor-sharp focus, while we walk this journey. We disciple our children full-time because we are absolutely directed by God to do so—and not just after school or on weekends, hoping we are making a difference.

It’s all day, every day; in the morning, at lunch time, during dinner, and before they go to sleep. Teach them Christ. Model truth. Stand firm in your resolve to obey God’s call to keep them home where they belong. This tender season is fleeting. One day you will look back, and I pray you will be filled with joy at the remembrance of it all.

You obeyed the Lord. You followed His Word. You were faithful.

As for today, His hand is on your head, as always.

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” —Deuteronomy 6:6-7
