La Asociación de Editores en lengua vasca, fundada en 1984, reúne a las editoriales que publican en lengua vasca. El objetivo fundamental es la promoción y defensa de la edición en lengua vasca, así como la representación, gestión y defensa de los intereses comunes de sus miembros.

The Association of Publishers in Basque, founded in 1984, aims to group together all publishing houses that publish works written in Basque. The association’s main aim is to promote and defend the publication of works in the Basque language, and to represent, manage and defend the common interests of its members.

Ayudas a la traducciónEl Instituto Vasco publica cada año una convo-catoria de subvenciones a la traducción en dos diferentes ámbitos:

a) ayudas para traducir obras literarias escri-tas y publicadas originalmente en euskera a otras lenguas.

b) ayudas para obras literarias escritas y publicadas originalmente en castellano por autores nacidos o domiciliados en la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca a otras lenguas.

Las características de la convocatoria son las siguientes: un plazo para presentar y resolver la convocatoria, requisito de presentar una muestra de traducción junto con la documentación téc-nica y administrativa, y posibilidad de obtener subvención de hasta el 100 % del gasto de traducción.

Las solicitudes las pueden presentar tanto editoriales como traductores profesionales. Se puede consultar la última convocatoria en la página web del instituto:

Ayudas a la promoción de la literaturaConvocatoria anual para agentes literarios (escri-tores, ilustradores, traductores y editores) para participar en eventos internacionales fuera del ámbito geográfico del euskera.

Grants for TranslationThe Etxepare Basque Institute publishes an an-nual grant call for translations in two different areas:

a) grants to translate literary works originally written and published in Euskara into other languages

b) grants to translate literary works originally written and published in Spanish by au-thors born in or residing in the Basque Autonomous Community into other lan-guages.

This grant call is made up of the following characteristics: one period in which to present and decide on the grant call, the necessary con-dition for presenting a translation sample together with the technical and administrative documen-tation, and the possibility of obtaining a grant of up to 100% of the translation costs.

Requests can be made by both publishing houses and professional translators. The latest grant call can be accessed at the institute’s web-site:

Baleen berbaroa es un thriller histórico situa-do en un pueblo de la costa vasca, Mundatxa durante el siglo XVI. Una ballena es avistada por varios marinos del pueblo, que inmedia-tamente se disponen a darle caza. Durante la caza de la ballena, se despiertan viejas ri-validades y rencillas entre los participantes, siendo estas desavenencias la antesala de la muerte del pescador local Ezkerti.

“Baleen berbaroa” (The murmur of the whales) is an historic thriller set in a town on the Basque coast, Mundatxa, during the 16th century. A whale is sighted by some sailors in the town, and they immediately set off to hunt it. During the whale hunt, old rivalries and quarrels are reawakened between the different members of the crew, with these disagreements being the prelude to the death of the local fisherman Ez-kerti.
