DESCRIPTION

In partnership with homeowner families, Habitat for Humanity Cambodia builds, rehabilitates and repairs simple, decent homes with the help of volunteer labor and donations of money, materials and other gifts-in-kind. Habitat houses are sold to home partner families at no profit. Home partners repay through affordable, no-profit and mortgage loans. Their monthly loan repayments go into a local revolving fund to be used to build still more Habitat homes. In short, Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program.

Dear Partners and Readers,

Yes, there is so much to be grateful for in 2012.

here is the success of our very irst Disaster Re-

sponse initiative in Siem Reap and Kandal. Our

HIV OVC housing program was expanded with

the creation of a second shelter-based project

for PLWHA called Building Homes Building

Positive Lives. We signed a 10-year partnership

with World Vision Cambodia, serving vulner-

our experience in hosting individual donors

CEO Jonathan Reckford and in hosting themed

fund raising builds like the Hands and Hearts.

Our Land Rights advocacy project in Battam-

bang City was again extended to another year,

which led to the distribution of land certiicates

to our urban Social Land Concession beneicia-

We are ultimately thankful for the opportunity

to prepare and plan for our new strategies in the

next 5 years, and as we move closer, we continue

to pray for guidance in recognizing our short-

comings and for strength to be bolder and be-

come more courageous in embracing new chal-

lenges this 2013.

his year is extra special. It serves as a strong re-

of the many times we questioned our purpose

and the many times we re-airmed our commit-

Shelter-Based Project for PLWHA Successfully Concluded

Chabpdeum Chivit Thmey, CCT (New Life, New Start) project aimed to complement so-cial services provided by HIV-focused pro-grams to PLWHA and orphaned and vul-nerable children in Cambodia with safe and decent shelter to promote sustained improve-ment in their living conditions and increase their life chances has reached its full comple-tion on December 2012.

In retrospect, the project has four significant objectives - to improve physical security and living conditions for PLWHA, to provide ac-cess to medical and social support, to increase beneficiary aspirations for a better future and to increase beneficiary livelihoods.

Upon its completion, the project has built and repaired 150 houses (35 new houses, 53 houses and lands, and 62 house repairs) with sanitation facilities (toilets, water filters, water jars, connection to clean water, pump wells, among others). Through Habitat for Human-ity Cambodia’s partner NGOs, the project has supported 244 infected and affected people of 150 families. Of which, the HIV-infected in-

dividuals receive regular free Anti-Retroviral Treatment, with zero drop-out rate through continued education about HIV/Aids includ-ing self-care, HIV/Aids prevention, preven-tion of mother-to-child transmission and discrimination reduction. Additionally, 145 families attended self-aspiration workshops focused on beneficiaries taking responsibil-ity and planning for their future. Families also attended training on basic construction skills, family financial management, small business management and livelihood. They were also provided training on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, which was conducted by a profes-sional consultant from the International In-stitute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR). The trainings were based on the results of a train-ing need assessment (TNA) conducted by the project and the families’ current resources.

Mr. Kheng Virak, the CCT Project Officer shared his thoughts about the project, “I have been working on HIV/Aids project for over two years and I have seen our approach evolve over time. Aligned with the program inter-vention’s improvements are tangible changes

among the families we are supporting and working with. They are healthier. They are more at peace. Their social lives have become normal for them and their families and their livelihood have improved, and they now have better plans for their future especially for their children. To them, their decent shelters helped them gain dignity.”

“Beyond our expectation, we finally have our own house. We also have clean toilet, public water and electricity connections, and our family has gained confidence. Relatives and neighbors acknowledge us more and no lon-ger discriminate against us. This new home brings my family many great things,” said Long Dara, 48-year old, CCT project home partner.

The CCT project began in January 2012 in partnership with Sharing Experience for Adapted Development, Khmera, Sihanouk Center of Hope, and funded by Elton John Aids Foundation. It served as a continuation of the first HIV project of Habitat for Human-ity Cambodia that was launched in 2010.

Oudong Families: Improved WaSH Awareness

A training on Personal Hygiene and Water and Sanitation was conducted to 19 partici-pants living in Punhea Leu district, Kandal Province on December 20. The training aimed to raise families’ awareness on the use of clean and unclean water, to educate them about water-borne diseases and prevention from the diseases, how to keep their water clean, the important of using toilets prop-erly and proper hand washing steps. Gender transparency in families was also included in the training topics.

To reach maximum results, the team brought together existing tools aligned with the train-ing that were developed by the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR). The tools included the use of photos about hygiene, water and sanitation which were used a in group works. A short video clip il-lustrated different improper living behaviour as well as the right practices.

“This training is really useful to me and my family. Before, we always thought we already know everything we need to know about hy-giene and we never pay attention to it. But after this training, I realized that we only knew very little about proper hygiene and how to live healthy lives. I’m very thankful that I was given a chance to be a part of this class and I promise to bring all I have learned to practice and share them to my family and other people in the community,” said Troy Bunthoeun, 44-year old, home partner from Chabpdeum Chivet Thmey (CCT) Project.

“Participants were so enthusiastic to learn about hygiene, water and sanitation. I believe that these families now have clearer under-standing. We expect great changes in their personal habits soon,” said Pich Sovann, HFH Cambodia Project Officer.

Global Village Off to the North

100 Global Village volunteers are needed this April to support in building homes for families needing secure tenure and adequate housing in Battambang City, Battambang province.

Habitat for Humanity Cambodia is establish-ing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Battambang Provincial Government for the development of available 41 plots of land (with an total land area of 2,952 sq m) for

housing over 82 families in need of adequate shelter, the construction of a community center for Informal Settlement Office. The area is located within the Social Land Con-cession (SLC) project area in Battambang. The agreement paves the way for HFH Cam-bodia to be duly authorized to operate and develop the area and to begin with family se-lection in accordance with the SLC policies, and furthermore led to the hosting of inter-

national Global Villages volunteers. This will be launched through the North Build hap-pening on April 1-5, 2013.

HFH New Zealand is actively raising GV volunteers for this special build and HFH China has signed up GV teams as well. The proceeds of this Special Build will benefit more SLC families in urban Battambang.

Global Village Wrap Up

December 31 to January 04: They fulfilled their New Year resolution. The 16 Global Village members from United States worked with HFH Cambodia in Pouk District Siem Reap and completed building six toilets for families that never before experienced using a latrine.

The team and the families excitedly accom-plished their long list of tasks and celebrated together with enriched knowledge about the importance of proper sanitation to adequate housing. Yes, they were doubly successful in achieving their New Year resolution of sup-porting people in need.

January 15 to 19: 33 Global Village vol-unteers from China reached out to Cam-bodian families with HFH Cambodia in Vimean Trung Community, Phnom Penh. The Cathay Pacific Airways Limited Com-pany Hong Kong was able to complete the foundations for three brick houses. They also did some plastering work.

Aside from building, the team learned well about the Cambodian culture and its charming people by creating friendships with the community people and the families and workers they worked with. They had a heart-felt dedication celebration, which the members say just makes them miss their home partners and new Cambodian friends more.

After six months, we returned to Kor Trokeat Primary School to film for our Water and Sanitation program and talk to some of the school children and teachers and see how things have been for them since we held a Hygiene Event in their school. We were greeted by the cheerful children as they busily cleaned their schoolyard and classrooms. It was their cleanup day. Every month, the school children would devote a day for them to gather their energies to help their school in maintaining their facilities. Unlike other private schools children, the students in Kor Trokeat Primary School have to see to it that they keep their learning grounds and facilities clean.

After cleaning up, some of the kids joined the younger ones in the library to read books and look through pictures. Among them was a familiar face – Tao Srey Ly - one of our young student leaders who actively helped us head a village Hygiene campaign in June last year. Srey Ly is now in High School and she has moved to study in Angkor Chum High School, 7km away from Kor Trokeat Primary School. Srey Ly’s teacher told us that she often visited the school and would spend time in the library studying and reading to the other children. She did not notice us, as she was carefully reading about the importance of clean water and proper hygiene to the other children who were also listening intently to her. We were pleasantly surprised to find Srey Ly in Kor Trokeat and we deeply appreciated her show of commitment to continue teaching the children.

It was almost noontime and the children began to leave the school. Srey Ly told us that she has to head home for lunch, change and go to her new school. “I love being in high school. I am learning many new things. Everyday is exciting for me, but I also love visiting my old school and spending time with the children. I am very happy that I still get to teach them and help them in my own little way,” she said.

Srey Ly’s words simply put our mission into perspective. We are grateful to her for allowing us to touch her life as one of our enthusiastic student leaders in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. She un-selfishly shares her time and energy to other children as she pursues her dream of completing her education. It is awe-inspiring to see such unwavering dedication coming from such a young heart.
