During Fiscal Year 2012-2013, Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West celebrated its 32nd anniversary. As the tenth oldest Habitat affiliate in the country, we completed and sold eight new homes and four recycled homes. In addition, through our tithe to our sister affiliate, we helped Habitat for Humanity Uganda build six homes. This resulted in eighteen families having a safe and affordable place to call home. The construction of these homes was made possible by our community partners. These include donors, Board members, churches, synagogues, corporations, foundations, civic clubs, staff and government funders. Our homes also couldn’t be built without the efforts of 1,440 volunteers who put in 25,549 volunteer hours. As we celebrate our 32nd anniversary, I would like to say that we have eliminated substandard housing. However, our waiting list tells a different story. In fact, due to the large number of families approved for Habitat homes and working on their sweat equity hours, we have had to stop taking applications. In response to the increased need for affordable housing in St. Tammany Parish, the Board and staff of Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West are focused on ensuring our financial sustainability and working hard to meet the housing needs of the families on our waiting list. Looking toward our 33rd anniversary, the affiliate’s Vision is clear, “A community where everyone has a decent place to live.” To achieve this vision, we need to secure the resources to increase home construction and begin taking applications again. As we approached the end of the 2012-2013 fiscal year, a new opportunity arose to serve more local residents in their pursuit of the dream of homeownership. The closing of a close partner agency left a huge gap in local homebuyer readiness services. Fortunately, with the support of St. Tammany Parish, we began planning the creation of the St. Tammany Homeownership Center as a service of HFHSTW to fill that gap. The Center, with plans to open in the 2013-2014 fiscal year, is designed to help more local residents achieve and sustain homeownership. Some clients will continue on with Habitat for Humanity, while others will take one of a growing number of other local paths to homeownership. At the Center, homeownership counseling and education are provided by experienced, certified staff. Homeownership counseling is a one-on-one process that starts with evaluating a client’s mortgage readiness for the type of financing chosen, and continues with development and implementation of a plan to overcome any credit and savings obstacles. Support is provided through the entire home buying process. Homeownership education includes hands-on home maintenance classes, as well as Financial Fitness and Homebuyer Training workshops often required by mortgage assistance products or lenders. We look forward to providing these expanded services to help St. Tammany homebuyers explore, prepare for, and sustain homeownership.

Fiscal year 2013 was a banner year for the Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany ReStore with revenues reaching $859,000, an increase of 15% over the prior year and easily our best year ever. Annual sales exceeded $40 per square foot for the first time. New business partnerships were established with six major donors – Ace Hardware, Ashley Furniture, Bedding Plus, Campbell Cabinets, La-Z-Boy Furniture, and Woolf-Harris, Inc. These generous, community minded, corporate citizens donated significant amounts of excess inventory to the ReStore, resulting in great furniture, mattresses, hardware, cabinets and plumbing fixtures for sale to our customers at prices well below retail. Sharing donor relationships with the Lafayette and Baton Rouge ReStores also generated excellent product for our ReStore. Profits generated by the ReStore are used to support the Habitat Mission of building homes, communities and hope. Tangible expression of this mission resulted in two west St. Tammany homes constructed directly from proceeds. In addition, the reuse of this serviceable merchandise meant the diversion of 1.14 million pounds of materials from our local landfills. The ReStore and the wonderful citizens of St. Tammany Parish are truly good stewards of all that we have been blessed to receive. Fiscal year 2013 was certainly a harbinger of continued development and growth of ReStore operations. Great expectations abound among the staff of the ReStore and Affiliate, along with our wonderful donors and customers. If you’ve visited our ReStore, you will agree. If you haven’t, stop by any time. You’ll be amazed at what you will find!

Honoring MothersMother ’s Day Build 2013 Mothers are the women who turn a house into a home. Habitat mothers are no exception, striving to improve their current situation and provide the best life possible for their families. The Peters Family is an example of the hard work and dedication Habitat families are willing to put in on their homes. Despite visual impairment, their mother has completed the required sweat equity hours toward purchasing their new home. On Monday, May 6th Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West invited the community to honor those women who made a difference in their lives by volunteering on the Peters Family home. Darnell Shuart and Sharon Lo Drucker, Women Build 2013 co-chairs, and Lowes representative Tatum Sunseri welcomed eighteen construction volunteers to the Mother's Day Build. Shuart, who has been actively involved in Women Build for several years, passionately shared her belief that "everyone should have the opportunity for affordable housing." After a brief opening ceremony in which mothers were honored with yellow roses, volunteers began painting the three bedroom home. Sheila Duggar from the Junior League of Greater Covington saw the event as "the perfect opportunity" for her first time Habitat volunteer experience. At the end of the day, the Peters family home was one step closer to completion and volunteers gave the gift of hope and joy to a hardworking mother in their community.
