People and the community have something in common and that is we

same goes with the community. We, humans experience problems in life which
might be personal or school-related problems. Moreover, a community also
faces different kinds of problem and one of those involves the environment.
In this module, you will learn to categorize the needs of a community and
relate it to our everyday lives, also it will open your eyes about the different
environmental problems that a community is facing.

I am a Hero Ma. Andrea Amor B. Lopez
Although I have small hands, I can do things
like tree planting, unplugging appliances when not in
use, and putting trash in the proper place. Although I
am just a junior high school student, I can think of
some ways to reuse, reduce, and recycle some
materials that were already considered as trash.
Although I have two small foot, I can stand on my
promises, I will not contribute to the current
environmental problems. Although I have a small
heart, it holds my concern to the environment for the
sake of my community and vice versa. I am very
thankful to God for I can do all these things through my
small acts of willingness to protect the environment. I
hope others will do the same thing too.

What are community needs?
Community needs are considered as a gap between what is currently existing
and what should exist in a community. There are four types of community needs in which we can use to categorize the gaps- perceived needs, expressed needs, absolute needs, and relative needs. Perceived Needs – a subjective kind of needs that greatly depends on what the individual feels their needs. It may vary from an individual to another, but these needs cannot be considered as an opinion although it is subjective because it is based on the feelings and concerns of community members. Expressed Needs- these are voiced out needs/ complained needs by individuals in a community. These are expressed needs that can help you guide towards what needs to be accomplished in a community.
8
Absolute Needs- also known as universal needs or the basic needs that an individual in a community should have. (i.e., food, water. safety, and clothing).
Relative Needs- these are needs rendered based on current circumstances and the
norm. For example, providing students with access to computers is not necessary but
because we are in a digital world, the lack of computers might be considered as a
relative need.
Categorizing these needs using the abovementioned can help you better prioritize your actions especially when a certain calamity comes. No community is safe when there is a problem in the environment because it causes threat to the community.
There is a relationship between community needs and environmental problems. As number of community needs increases, the environmental problem also increases.
Now, here are some examples of common environmental problems affecting the community:
Plastic Pollution - the most widespread problem affecting the marine environment. It also threatens ocean health, food safety and quality, human health, coastal tourism, and contributes to climate change. Deforestation- is the clearing, destroying, or otherwise removal of trees through deliberate, natural, or accidental means. It can occur in any area densely populated by trees and other plant life. It can cause flooding and soil erosion to name few. Air pollution- refers to the release of pollutants into the air that are detrimental to human health and the planet. This comes mostly from industrial sources and motor vehicles, as well as emissions from burning biomass and poor air quality due to dust storms. Waste Disposal- improper waste disposal creates a hazardous problem to everyone because it does affect the health of the community. Garbage thrown in the rivers may not only block the waterways but also invites rodents that can infect the water and soon be transferred to humans. Lack of enough dumpsites and landfills to properly dispose garbage also contribute to our environmental problem. These environmental problems greatly affect the community, and it may also bring health-related issues to its people. That is why it is very important to build a community that focuses on providing activities that will benefit the environment which eventually raise awareness to everyone about its importance,
