1 HGRG Newsletter, Issue 1 Welcome to the inaugural newsletter of the Human Geography Research Group (HGRG). Members were asked to contribute some information about recent research, teaching or administrative activities that they felt were successes. What you will read below is information about what matters to our members as researchers, teachers, and activists. Enjoy! JULIE CUPPLES Producing and contesting urban marginality: Speculation, public space and social movements in the neoliberal city In July 2016, Julie Cupples and Tom Slater in collaboration with colleagues Antonio Gallardo and Mario López González Garza at Universidad La Salle in Mexico City organized a workshop on urban marginality. Funded by the British Council Newton Fund, the workshop explored the material and symbolic mechanisms through which urban marginality is produced and contested. It involved 30 early career scholars from the UK and Mexico who shared their research on urban marginality in Mexico, the UK, Colombia, Brazil and Turkey. We also undertook a fieldtrip to Palmitas in Hidalgo, where an interesting artistic intervention led by artists Germen Crew (see photo) has helped to improve self esteem and neighbourhood dynamics. More information on the workshop can be found at http://www.urbanmarginalityrlw.com/

RowmanandLittlefieldTransformingCapitalismbookseriesThis book series, edited by Ian Bruff, Julie Cupples, Gemma Edwards, Laura Horn, SimonSpringer and Jacqui True, provides a platform for the publication of path-breaking andinterdisciplinary scholarshipwhich seeks to understand and critique capitalismalong fourkey lines: crisis, development, inequalityand resistance.Through thisapproach the seriesalerts us to how capitalism is always evolving, and hints at howwe could also transformcapitalismitselfthroughourownactions.TransformingCapitalismisrootedinthevibrant, broad and pluralistic debates spanning a range of approaches in a number of fields anddisciplines.Theserieshasat itscore theassumptionthat theworld is invariousstatesoftransformationandthatthesetransformationsmaybuilduponearlierpathsofchangeandconflictwhile alsopotentially producingnew formsof crisis, development, inequality andresistance.Theeditorsarepleasedtoannouncethatwehavenowpublishedthefirstfourbooks in this series. HAMISHKALLINSUCCESSFULUNDERGRADUATEFIELDTRIPTOATHENSIn early September, with Kanchana Ruwanpura, I successfully led a new undergraduatefieldtrip to Athens, ancient capital of Greece. Students were immersed in a city on thefrontlineofmultipleintersectingcrises:thefiscalcollapseofthestate, thewaveofrefugeesfleeingthewarinSyria, feministpoliticsaroundausterityandrefugees, andthecontinuingreality of harsh austerity measures. Through a series of walking tours organised incollaborationwithlocalactivistsandacademics, studentswereencouragedtoexploresomeof the consequences of these processes, focusing in particular on the political dissent ofstreetart, thecontestedpoliticsofgentrificationandthegendereduseofpublicspace.WewereaccompaniedbyagroupofenthusiasticandcommittedTA's(Benj,Nazli,Fiona,Laura,Ryan, Ross, and Radheeka) and by the School’s Health and Safety manager, RichardChalkley, and are particularly grateful for their assistance and enthusiasm during thefieldwork.
