As I refl ect on our progress as an organization each year, I am struck by the dedication of our board, senior leadership team, employees, physicians and volunteers to continue to advance the services that we off er to our growing region of 230,000 residents.

In this community report edition of Health Matters, I want to share with you some of the advancements we have made in the past fi scal year. A few of these advancements include our digital technologies, a growing medical staff , new services and the impact of the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation in our region.

Th e information contained in this report is a testament of our commitment to caring for our community and I hope you fi nd it informative.

Maury Regional Health is a not-for-profi t regional health system serving southern Middle Tennessee through its hospitals, clinics, surgery centers, outpatient facilities and physician practice group. Th e organization is committed to providing innovative service by combining convenient and aff ordable access with skilled and compassionate care. Th e following are a few of the accomplishments that took place in the past fi scal year:

Ranked #1 in TennesseeCareChex®, an information service of Quantros, Inc., ranked Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) number one in Tennessee for overall hospital care and overall surgical care in the areas of medical excellence for 2019. CareChex® evaluates the performance of more than 4,000 hospitals across the nation, with awards based

on cumulative performance across the most recent three years of public data. Medical quality evaluated includes process of care, outcomes of care and patient experiences in two primary areas — medical excellence and patient safety. MRMC ranked number one in the state in medical excellence for several specifi c areas of care or procedures, including:

New electronic health record and patient portal launchedMaury Regional Health (MRH) launched a new electronic medical record (EMR) system in November 2018. Benefi ts include one medical record that allows the MRH team to provide better care coordination between providers. Patients have a medical record that refl ects services received at Maury Regional Medical Center, Maury Regional Medical Group physician practices, Maury Regional Physical Th erapy, Maury Regional Urgent Care, Maury Regional Federally Qualifi ed Health Centers, Lewis Health Center, Marshall Medical Center and Wayne Medical Center. Along with the new EMR, MRH introduced a new user-friendly patient portal that provides convenient access to personal health care information in a secure online environment.

Behavioral health hospital joint ventureMaury Regional Health (MRH) and TriStar Health are joining forces to develop the fi rst inpatient behavioral health hospital in southern Middle Tennessee. Pinewood Springs is a 60-bed 49,900-sq.-ft . hospital located at 1001 North James Campbell Boulevard in Columbia. Th e facility will serve both adult and adolescent patients, with 42 beds for adults and 18 for adolescents. Th e two wings will be separated with each having two activity courtyards for patients. Th ose served will include individuals facing depression, substance abuse, anxiety and other emotional conditions. Th e anticipated completion date for the new hospital is January 2020. 

Urgent care & walk-in expansionMaury Regional Health expanded its convenient care services with the addition of a third Maury Regional Urgent Care location in north Columbia (Neapolis area). Located at 2478 Nashville Highway, Suite A, the center serves patients Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. In addition, the Maury Regional Health primary care practice in Lewisburg expanded walk-in services to six days per week. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Maury Regional launches new app for urgent careMaury Regional ondemand is a mobile app that provides patients with urgent care services through face-to-face physician visits on a mobile video conferencing platform. Designed to supplement existing primary care and urgent care services, the app provides a connection to a physician 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including when the patient is traveling or when their physician’s offi ce is closed. Benefi ts of the new service include:• Average wait times of 5-7 minutes• Less expensive than an ER visit• Prescriptions sent to the pharmacy selected

by the patient

Aff ordably priced at $69, patients simply download the mobile app, create an account and use the camera on a smart phone or tablet to connect with a provider. Users may also utilize a PC with camera and audio features to access services at MauryRegionalondemand.com. Physicians in the platform are contracted with American Well, a leader in the telehealth industry.

Cancer Center offers new PET CT imaging technologyTh e Maury Regional Cancer Center added the new Biograph mCT for advanced PET, CT and PET/CT imaging services. Th is imaging technology is used to evaluate staging and monitoring of cellular activity over time and to assess treatment response. Benefi ts include dose-reduction technologies to minimize patient exposure to radiation and fast scan times that result in less patient motion to improve image quality and overall patient experience. Th e Biograph mCT can support patients up to 500 lbs. and is designed to

reduce claustrophobia with a 78-cm bore. Th e purchase of this equipment enabled the organization to expand PET services to fi ve days a week and complemented the Cancer Center’s advanced technology.

Fiscal Year In ReviewNew cardiovascular technologyMaury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) now off ers the world’s smallest pacemaker: the Micra® Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS), which provides patients the most advanced pacing technology at one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker. Kevin Maquiling, M.D., performed

the fi rst Micra® TPS procedure at MRMC in February 2019. Dr. Maquiling is a member of the MRMC medical staff and a specialist in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology with Vanderbilt Heart–Columbia. MRMC performs pacemaker

procedures in its Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, which eliminates the need for an operating room and expedites recovery time. In addition to its work with pacemakers, MRMC provides a number of interventional services, such as implanting internal cardiac defi brillators and angioplasty as well as stenting procedures. Th e facility also off ers diagnostic testing, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation and more. Mobile medical unitMaury Regional Health’s mobile medical unit continues to expand its outreach services in the region. In the past fi scal year, the unit visited six counties in southern Middle Tennessee, served 7,795 individuals and conducted 5,283 screenings. Th e 38-foot wheelchair accessible recreational vehicle is customized with two exam rooms and a laboratory area. Th e unit is staff ed by clinical professionals who provide services including general primary care, routine screenings, education on health and disease management and referral services. Th is project, which launched in February 2018, was made possible by the generosity of donors through a fundraising campaign conducted by the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation.

Maury Regional Medical Group Maury Regional Medical Group, an affi liate of Maury Regional Health, is a network of physician practices that includes family medicine physicians and a vast array of physician specialists. More than 130 providers see patients in 20 practices and three urgent care locations, off ering a variety of services, including walk-in clinics, disease management, immunizations, wellness exams and much more. In the past fi scal year, Maury Regional Medical Group has added seven new physicians. For a complete list of new physicians, see page 8.

Th e Maury Regional Health Care Foundation has provided more than $2.8 million in programs and services throughout our region since its formation in 2006. In the 2018-2019 fi scal year, the Foundation provided more than $428,000 in assistance.

Every dollar donated to the Foundation directly benefi ts the community because all administrative expenses are covered by the medical center.

Th ere are a variety of Foundation funds dedicated to assisting the needs of specifi ed individuals and groups, ranging from those facing cancer to those needing food pantry assistance.
