Platforms: 2-0 for Droevendaal As most of you already might have read, SSHW decided NOT to continue with the trial to deliver the Droevendaal-rooms with a staircase in order to charge more rent. We are very happy with this decision; we pay already more than enough! The consequence however is that the status of our platform is now officially set to 'storage space’. The use of the platform for other purposes than storage is completely at our own risk, so if you ever happen to use it otherwise and fall down, you (and your assurance company) can never claim anything against the SSWH. But of course that will not happen... ? for now, special thanks to everybody (including the Platform-Platform and the test-inhabitant) who helped to convince the SSHW. And enjoy the creativity of our fellow Droevendalers’ staircases (pictures by Jurgen 43 and Rosalie 55):

De Trimsalon is een atletiekbolwerk Door MICHIEL HOMMEL In Wageningen staat een heus hardloperhuis. Sinds het jaar 2000 wordt het bewoond door atleten van Tartlétos. ‘In wisselende samenstelling, maar wel altijd met hetzelfde slag mensen.’ Op huisbezoek in De Trimsalon. WAGENINGEN - ‘De Trimsalon’, kopt een bord voor een van de studentenbarakken aan de Droevendaalsesteeg. Een passende betiteling; in het huis wonen zes atleten van de Wageningse studentenclub Tartlétos. „Onder die naam staan we ook in het telefoonboek“, vertelt Martijn Schenk, één van het half dozijn Tartleten, met een glimlach. „Dat levert grappige situaties op. Tenminste tien keer per jaar worden we gebeld door mensen die vragen of ze hier ook hun hond of kat kunnen langsbrengen. We dachten dat het na een tijdje zou ophouden, maar het blijft gebeuren.“ Sterker nog; van De Trimsalon werd zelfs melding gemaakt in de Wageningse gemeentegids. „Daarin stonden we in de categorie bedrijven“, lacht huisgenote Irene Vroegrijk. De Trimsalon is bepaald geen bedrijf. Het is een gezellig studentenhuis, waarvan de bewoners gek zijn van atletiek. Sinds het jaar 2000 wordt de studentenbarak louter bewoond door leden van de atletiekvereniging Tartlétos. „In wisselende samenstelling“, vertelt Ronald van den Dungen, de enige huidige bewoner die vanaf de eerste dag in het huis woont. „We wilden destijds met een groep van Tartlétos gaan samenwonen. Maar ik wilde alleen meedoen als we op de Droevendaalsesteeg terecht kwamen. We hadden in andere studentenflats kunnen wonen, maar het nadeel van die plekken is dat je bij verhuizing niet je nieuwe huisgenoot mag kiezen. Dan bepaalt de SSHW (de stichting voor studentenhuisvesting in Wageningen, red.) wie erbij komt.“ „Op de Droevendaalsesteeg hebben we de keuze uit vijftien aanmeldingen“, zegt Vroegrijk. „En we zorgen er altijd wel voor dat daar een Tartleet tussen zit. Zodra iemand van de club in Wageningen een kamer heeft, schrijft deze zich ook in voor ‘De Droef’. Afgezien van enkele bewoners die hier in onderhuur woonden, hebben we altijd mensen van de club in huis gehad.“ Naast Schenk, Vroegrijk en Van den Dungen maken ook Mieke Plaatzer, Co Laan en Jochem Hufmeier deel uit van het atletiekbolwerk op de Droevendaalsesteeg. De twee vrouwen Vroegrijk en Plaatzer pas sinds een half jaar. „Daarvoor zaten hier alleen maar mannen“, vertelt Van den Dungen. „Maar ik kan niet zeggen dat het voor hun komst een typisch mannenhuis was. Het was eigenlijk schoner dan nu het geval is.“ De sportieve sfeer is altijd gebleven. „Niet dat er de hele tijd over atletiek wordt gepraat“, zegt Vroegrijk. „Maar het is wel te merken. Alleen al aan alle hardloopschoenen en atletiekblaadjes die door het huis slingeren, zoals wel zes keer het clubblad van Tartlétos.“ „Het is prettig om met clubgenoten samen te wonen“, stelt Van den Dungen. „Iedereen doet aan atletiek en dus krijg je altijd dezelfde slag mensen. Dat is in een gewoon studentenhuis anders.“ De huidige bewoners van De Trimsalon zijn geen topatleten. „Bij de eerste lichting bewoners van dit huis waren er wel een paar die heel hard liepen“, vertelt Van den Dungen. „Wij lopen voor de lol. En gezellig is het hier nog altijd.“

Droef goes more international The number of international students on Droevendaal has been rising considerably in the last year: officially now it is around 15 and still going up. Why are we so popular? We hope to find out. Anyway, the official SSHW-ban on the maximum of 1 international student per barrack is lifted. In fact, the SSHW hopes to get more foreigners to Droevendaal (30 as minimum), but will respect our cooptation system in all ways. Internally on Droevendaal, we should reconsider our communication and maybe do more in English. For example this Droevendalia, or the General Droevendaal Meeting twice a year, and the leaflets for parties and movies.. And more, we would like to know from all inhabitants (Dutch and international) what they expect from Droevendaal and how we can make it even more enjoyable here. And we hope that everybody will contribute to this in her/his way. But that comes when time is right.. for now, we would be very happy with somebody who can help our webmaster (Marc of 33) by building an English part to our website www.droevendaal.nl. Small changes In the DWB (Daily Living Council), Hanneke (69) retreated as part-time mayor but will stay active as a member of the Council. In a couple of weeks Maarten (107) will leave Droef (he is heading for southern Germany), so he will leave the Council. We thank him for all his work, in the DWB and the ABC. In the ABC (Common Barrack Committee), Ieme (103) and Marc (33) will leave. Giel (35) and Cor (89) will get help from Eva (101) and Karin (57?). We also wish to thank Eelke (USA) for being the webmaster of www.droevendaal.nl. Marc from 33 has taken over his job.

In Wageningen heeft zich dierenzaak Happypets gevestigd. Zie www.happypets.nl. Zij leveren onder andere natuurlijk kattenvoer en andere dierbenodigdheden. Ze hebben Droevendaal voorgesteld dat we, als we in het groot inkopen, korting kunnen krijgen. Is iemand geïnteresseerd om eens uit te zoeken of dat iets is en het indien gewenst verder uit te werken? Stuur een berichtje naar droefburgemeester@gmail.com.

‘Green’ students shower longest From Wb, March 2nd 2006 Students living in Droevendaal and the Bornsesteeg shower considerably more than others. They use 56 litres of water per person daily, 16 litres more than the average person in Wageningen and 13 more than the nationwide average. MSc students in Urban Environmental Management carried out a survey. The students examined water and energy use, and waste flows in the two student complexes and in the neighbourhood Wageningen Hoog. They carried out the assignment for the municipality of Wageningen and in cooperation with the accommodation bureau SSHW. The research was supervised by the Urban Environment Group, an interdisciplinary team of representatives from Alterra and various chair groups. The Environmental Sciences students think it will be difficult to persuade students at Droevendaal and the Bornsesteeg to shower less frequently or for a shorter time. Their advice is therefore that SSHW should install water-saving showerheads. At present only half of the showerheads at Droevendaal and a third in the Bornsesteeg are of the water-saving kind. In addition the students mention the use of rainwater for the WC or washing machine. By placing a rain barrel on the roof you create pressure so the water does not have to be pumped. There are already a couple of rainwater reservoirs at Droevendaal. / HB

The Shower Show A questionnaire from the students in the Urban Environment Group concerning “urban harvest and resource use” caused some stirring in green and eco-friendly Droevendaal last week. Our man on the scene reports. A couple of weeks ago an international student came to our door wanting to ask me some questions about environment and such. Always willing to participate in research and interested in the results I dutifully answered all questions on waste separation, car parking, water use in and around the house, vegetarian food and much more. Wishing him luck in working out the extensive questionnaire, I let the student out. I guessed Droevendaal would be among the lower level users of gas, water and electricity. Since the rebuilding in ‘99/’00 the records have been kept, with Droef 97 as my all-time-favorite with their “less-is-more”-policy. In 2001 they won the annual energy saving competition for which they had been wearing heavy sweaters all winter long, showering limitedly. With a variety of measures such as rainwater-collectors and sunboilers the Droevendaal barracks are designed as energy-friendly living places. Alas those days are over, as became known when the questionnaire results became published in the Wb of March 2nd of 2006. As you can read in the article the Droevendaal residents use 56 liters of water per day for showering. Supposedly this was calculated from the answers to the questions ‘How often do you shower”, “How long do you shower” and “Do you have a water saving showerhead?”. All Wageningen could read Droevendaal students are energy-consumers of the worst kind. We shower 6 times a week around 10 minutes each time. Now I won’t say this is nothing, in fact, it’s quite a lot. The problem with the statement is that it is unscientific and sensational. Katleen De Flander, teacher involved, reacted that the purpose of the course was to focus on urban harvest. This is harvesting materials and resources for direct use or recycling in a living area. The goal of the interviews, one of the data gathering techniques and made and organised by students, was to collect information on urban harvest and also collect some information on use of resources and it’s comparison to potential and actual urban harvest. The questionnaire was not made for obtaining specific information on showering. Katleen De Flander insists that if collecting showering data the questions should have been made more specific. Also, the interviews were meant to let the students practice. In the results of the research Droevendaal looks promising as the difference between potential and actual harvest is lowest. The water collection system for the toilets and washing machine does its job, as does the sun boiler on the roof. We separate our green waste for our chickens and bring large quantities of bottles to the glass container. And of course some eco-fascists separate the nail in the teabag from the teabag. Certainly this scores big ecopoints!!! However, as Katleen De Flander explains, the research was not meant to evaluate showering habits and moreover, the Wb interpreted the presented information as can be seen in the box. Nowhere was

suggested that Droevendaal residents shower longer than other students. Wb should have focused on the topic of the research and interviews, not print the misleading header that was wrongly concluded by Wb from the graphs drawn by the students. I think the Wb was aiming for sensation with publishing this article, apparently luring for a reaction from the ‘green’ students of Droevendaal. To exercise my own Excel skills I drew some diagrams of the actual energy use of Droevendaal as can be found on the SSHW homepage. Remember that the roof collected water is not taken into account! Let’s start with the Dutch national figures: average shower time in the Netherlands is 7,5 minute with 55 litres of water for every shower. On average Dutch people take 0,69 showers a day (source: TNS-Nipo). That means about 38 litres of fresh water are used daily per head on average for showering. Droevendaal-wide, in 2004 5009 m3 of water (source: SSHW) was used in 2004. For 198 residents (probably more…) that is 25,3 m3 per resident per year. That amounts to 69,3 litres of fresh water per day per resident. Considerably lower than the Haarweg residents, who use an astonishing 133 litres of fresh water per day, even more than the national figure. It is difficult to estimate how much ‘grey’ (roof collected) water is used on top of this at Droevendaal. According to TNS-Nipo, 54% of all water used daily is flushed trough the toilet (36%) and used for washing clothes (18%). This suggests that Droevendalers would use around 150 litres of water per day, including grey water (assumed only grey water goes trough the toilet (which is not true)). So you see, we’re quite average after all: our water use is normal compared to others in the country and it’s by grace of our roof collectors that we use (and pay for) considerable less fresh water from our taps. So what have we learned from this? Maybe we’re not so unaverage as we thought we were. Too bad, but hey! No worries boys and girls! We’ ve still got our own chicken, newspaper and mayor! By the way, in terms of natural gas use we’re pretty good as you can see in the second graph.

The interview with questionnaires was nice in it’s approach but probably not the best ever held. Next time, please send interviewers who have actually read the questions beforehand! Wb should not have drawn their own conclusions from the presented information and should maybe have concentrated on more important issues. Wb did try to create a little fuzz in boring Wageningen and it succeeded. In what town are the only real issues “who used the least water” and “can you charge a small wooden platform for rent”?

Vraag We hebben een probleempje. Droevendalers zijn vaak creatief en ondernemend. Soms wordt dat ondersteund door bouwsels in ons groen. Een van de taken van de complexbeheerder is om het bouwenthousiasme van de bewoners bij te sturen, zodat er geen wildgroei van constructies ontstaat. De grenzen van wat wel en niet kan zijn overigens bij de oplevering van Droevendaal Nieuwbouw in 2000 tussen de bewoners en de SSHW afgesproken. Freek van 59 is bezig een fietsenwinkel te beginnen, en heeft de afgelopen maanden daarvoor her en der (met name bij Rijnsteeg) fietsen verzameld. Deze staan nu in de tuin van 59, en daar is de SSHW minder blij mee. Hij was begonnen om een mooi opberghok te maken, maar dit blijkt buiten de leefregels van Droef te vallen. Als Dagelijks Woon Bestuur willen we enerzijds onze bewoners zoveel mogelijk de ruimte geven. Van de andere kant moet eea. nou eenmaal gereguleerd worden. En concreet staan er nu fietsen die ergens een opslag moeten vinden. Ons voorstel is om tijdelijk & eenmalig éénvijfde van de fietsenstalling tussen '33 en '35 te bestemmen voor de opslag van de opknapfietsen, nl de helft van het kleine hok (aan de kant van '35). Als we met de fietsen en motoren die er al staan inschikken moet dat lukken. Hierbij stellen we de volgende voorwaarden voor: • Dit is voor maximaal één jaar, dus tot april 2007 • We doen dit nu eenmalig omdat de opknapfietsen al op Droef staan. Als je zelf een dergelijk idee

hebt, bedenk van tevoren goed wat de consequenties zijn. We gaan niet nog een keer zoiets regelen.

• Freek zorgt ervoor dat eea netjes geregeld is, en dat de rest van het hok (dat wil zeggen de andere helft van die kant) zonder problemen door iedereen gebruikt kan worden, net als nu.

• Freek zorgt voor een zelf te bedenken tegenprestatie voor Droevendaal als geheel. Omdat de fietsenstalling van alle Droevendalers is, hopen we dat iedereen het eens is met deze oplossing. Mocht jij het er niet mee eens zijn, stuur dan (liefst voor 31 maart) een emailtje naar droefburgemeester@gmail.com. Als deze oplossing niet breed gedragen wordt, gaan we zoeken naar een andere. Voor de duidelijkheid: dit voorstel komt oorspronkelijk van de complexbeheerder, niet direct van Freek of van het DWB. Luc

Vaccinatie hobbypluimvee

(geplukt en een beetje ingekort van www.minlnv.nl) ------------------

Houders van hobbypluimvee (kippen, eenden, ganzen en kalkoenen) kunnen van 16 maart 2006 tot 1 juli 2006 hun pluimvee laten vaccineren tegen vogelgriep. Dit mag alleen als de dieren minimaal zeven weken oud zijn. Vaccinatie is vrijwillig en is een alternatief voor afschermen. Niet-gevaccineerde dieren moeten afgeschermd blijven, zolang de afschermplicht geldt. De vaccinatie bestaat uit twee inentingen. Eén week na de tweede inenting hebben de dieren een goede bescherming opgebouwd. Ze mogen dan weer naar buiten. Eten en drinken moet nog wél afgeschermd worden gegeven: in een ruimte die ten minste aan de bovenzijde ondoorlaatbaar is afgedekt. Let op! Vaccinatie betekent geen garantie dat de dieren bij een eventuele uitbraak van vogelgriep in de buurt, niet zullen worden geruimd. (..) De voordelen van vaccinatie • Door het vaccineren wordt pluimvee minder gevoelig voor het vogelgriepvirus. De vaccinatie beschermt de dieren tegen ziekteverschijnselen en sterfte door vogelgriep. (..) • Eén week na de tweede vaccinatie mag het pluimvee weer naar buiten. Het vaccin is ongeveer een jaar werkzaam en dus ook nog in de najaarstrek van wilde vogels eind 2006. De nadelen van de vaccinatie • Aan de vaccinatie zijn kosten verbonden, die slechts voor een deel door het ministerie van LNV worden betaald. • Door vaccinatie is het moeilijker een besmetting aan te tonen. Daarom moeten hobbydierhouders bij toekomstige ziekteverschijnselen of sterfte van hun pluimvee de dierenarts informeren. • Ook moeten de hobbydierhouders een administratie van de gevaccineerde dieren bijhouden, met onder andere verplaatsingen en sterfte van de dieren. (..) Tot slot mogen gevaccineerde dieren niet zomaar worden vervoerd. (..) Werkwijze vaccinatie Voor hobbydierhouders die hun kippen, kalkoenen, eenden en/of ganzen van tenminste zeven weken tegen vogelgriep laten vaccineren is de werkwijze als volgt: Aanmelden bij dierenarts Hobbydierhouders kunnen zich voor vaccinatie van hun pluimvee melden bij de dierenarts. (..) De dierenarts voert de vaccinaties thuis bij de hobbydierhouders uit. (..) (..) Dierenarts komt drie keer De dierenarts komt drie keer op bezoek. Bij het eerste dierenartsbezoek wordt bij vijf procent van de dieren bloed afgenomen voor onderzoek en wordt de eerste vaccinatie bij alle te vaccineren dieren toegediend. Bij het tweede bezoek volgt een tweede vaccinatie. De dierenarts komt tot slot een derde keer om nogmaals bloed af te nemen voor onderzoek. (..) Het ministerie van LNV betaalt de kosten van de twee bloedproeven (inclusief het derde dierenartsbezoek). Het vaccin is een 'dood' vaccin wat betekent dat het geen levend virus bevat. Gevaccineerde dieren en hun producten vormen dan ook geen gevaar voor de mens of voor andere niet-gevaccineerde dieren. Registratie De hobbydierhouder is verplicht een goede registratie van de verblijfsplaats van alle gevaccineerde

dieren bij te houden. (..) Vervoersverbod Het is verboden gevaccineerde dieren en hun producten te verkopen. Wel mag de hobbydierhouder ze voor eigen consumptie blijven gebruiken. Ook het verplaatsen van gevaccineerd pluimvee, broedeieren en eendagskuikens is niet toegestaan. (...)

Consequenties voor Droevendaal Zoals we de afgelopen weken gezien hebben controleert de politie daadwerkelijk of de hokken goed afgedekt zijn. Sommige barakken hebben het beter voor elkaar dan andere, en bij enkele ziet het er nu goed uit maar vragen we ons af of er geen kippen gebraden gaan worden als de zon eenmaal goed op kracht komt.. De vraag is dus eigenlijk of we onze hokken blijvend willen gaan aanpassen en 's winters de dieren opgehokt willen houden of voor de (waarschijnlijk jaarlijkse) inenting + alle administratieve rompslomp kiezen. We hebben een dierenarts bereid gevonden om - mits we het zelf goed organiseren - voorrijkosten te rekenen voor heel Droef ineens. Hij rekent het tarief van € 100,- per bezoek als geheel. Verder begrepen we dat de vaccinatie zelf ca. 30 eurocent gaat kosten, en zoals hierboven staat gaat het ministerie de onderzoekskosten betalen. De kosten per kip worden dan 2 x € 100 --------------------------------------- + 2 x € 0,30 # aantal kippen dat meedoet Volgens de laatste Huisdiertelling zijn er ca 100 kippen, sindsdien is de vos weer langs geweest maar zijn er ook nieuwe bijgekomen. ALS we al onze kippen (en de paar ganzen, en eventuele eenden) laten vaccineren zou dat dus op 2,60 per jaar uitkomen. Als maar een paar barakken meedoen wordt het een dure grap. Als DWB weten we niet of een collectieve actie zin heeft en aan een behoefte voldoet. Ons voorstel is voorlopig de boel aan te kijken en op de Droefvergadering in mei te beslissen of we gaan proberen iets gecoördineerds te coördineren (vanzelfsprekend blijft deelname aan een eventueel inentings-programma vrijwillig). IMPORTANT NOTE from your secretary: for the first time the Droevendaal-meeting was held in English. I’ve tried to take minutes as good as possibly can be expected but have been unable to translate some points correctly. I hope this does not hamper the reading of these minutes. Dutch words are used with an extra (NL) attached.

1. Agenda: the caretaker point will be disposed because he is ill and not present.

4. International students: Larenstein College is moving to Wageningen. SFO is looking for places for international students. What do we think of it? The SFO opts for a quorum of 33 international students on Droef. Right now, there are 14 international students living here. The idea is only to admit international students until the number 33 is reached. Arnout: suspension of cooptation is not good since you can’t choose any more Peter: it will give strange situations when a barak is moving as a whole Saskia: what’s the difference between Dutch and international students? It’s all about people that want to live here. Merijn: The SSHW is forcing us to choose international students. Luc: if the ban on more than 1 international student per barak is lifted the problem will solve itself.

5. Green Group: Jurgen and Merijn are representatives.

a. Any questions can be put forward to them b. Last November a Greenworkday was held. Lots of small trees were cut and common

hedges were freed of those plants. Any material still lying around can be used to form hedges.

c. In the winter another Greenworkday will be organised d. Green Group is looking at gardens: trees and other vegetation should be kept in hand. 2

or 3 specific trees will form a problem in the future. Trees to be cut will be discussed with baraks.

e. Chickens: because of “influenza aviare” (Bird pest) there’s an ‘ophokplicht’ (NL) right now. Probably it will be lifted coming January

f. Next week more information on the pollution near 79 will be available.

g. Somebody removed the parking-preventing-poles from the sides of the road. Parking is no longer allowed on Droevendaal. The caretaker will alert the police who will fine the owners of such cars.

6. ABC/ Common Barak Committee: Cor is representing

a. A new chairman is wanted because Ieme is leaving b. New members are wanted, right now there are not enough members to organise

anything. c. The DWB/ Daily Living Council has advised to close the Common Barak until the ABC is

back on the track. d. Everybody should ask around for members otherwise the Common Barak will be closed

one day e. Finances: no idea but probably okay

7. DWB/ Daily Living Council: Luc is representing

a. Maarten (107) left and came back due to study activities. b. Fleur (ex-47) has left the DWB. c. No questions

8. Droevendaal Common Points:

a. TV-connection: we will wait until a free alternative is provided for the current antenna services.

Arnout: in response to the Droevendaal article in Wb: SSHW should involve the inhabitants in choosing Saskia: a per-barak-solution should be considered Jurgen: why not place satellite dishes? SSHW welstandscommissie (NL) doesn’t want that

b. Platform: Luc explains the current situation Lidewij: what does SSHW want to gain? à it’s not clear what they want Saskia: you will have to make a really big stairway if you follow regulations Luc: the SSHW confirms they just want the money. Also a trial will be held soon in one room. How can we stop the SSHW?

ü Blockade new rooms with legal ways (i.e. stop cooptation) ü Inform press and ridicule the idea ü Calculate possibilities and costs ü Search for legal obstacles ü We can ask for the plans of the SSHW

We want to see the big bosses of the SSHW to explain what they want. We should make a workgroup on this issue. The following persons volunteered: Luc, Ronald, Maarten, Jurgen, Rutger, Peter, Saskia, Lidewij, Hamza and Arnout. (in the mean time this group has made the site www.droevendaal.nl/platform (Dutch only) so check that)

c. Pet-vaccination: cats were vaccinated. Saskia: next year rabbits should be vaccinated in the spring

d. Droef-Party: Peter explains the budget Peter: it was a cheap party, but with low number of visitors also. The balance became -385 euros .This means the DroefGarantiePlan (NL) should be used and baraks will not see their money returned. Proposal: DGP goes into the pot (NL) for next year. Luc: why are there no T-shirts in the balance? Peter: money goes into one deposit and no shifting is done there Maarten: where is the budget from last year? Peter: this money was already spent at other things.

Eva continues: publicity was not made very big on purpose Any T-shirts that are left will be sold at the Midwinterparty. Making the T-shirts was a lot of work Eva will start the committee next year and make sure information is transferred. A plan of approach will be made for next year’s committee. The publicity at the start (“it will not go on”) worked out bad according to some people. Eva was asked as chairman but is looking for help with that.

e. Droef-Midwinterparty: this will be 17th of December Tomorrow more plans will be made.

f. Droevendalia: any comments? Next year it should contain more articles and stories.

g. Process of old habitants: Luc explains 1 process was lost so far, 3 have signed an agreement. The end of the last processes will be soon, the outcome is not yet clear.

9. Matters Arising

Merijn: if you want to be notified of future Greenworkdays you can email Merijn.Biemans@wur.nl Merijn: there are plastified greenplans available for Barak 53 and 101 Ronald: will we be invited for the demolition of Rijnsteeg? à No idea Luc: should we speak English here? à yes Maarten: involvement in Droevendaal is lowering. Other people agree on this. It should be a point for the next meeting.
