About the Machinery DirectiveThe first and most important objective of the Machinery Directive is to minimize worksite

accidents. The directive applies to companies placing CE marked products inside the

European Economic Area (EEA). It covers anything from small consumer products such

as handheld power tools and outboard motors to large professional products such as

paper-making machinery and tower cranes. Compliance allows products to circulate freely

on the European market since the requirements placed on health and safety are taken

care of. Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC came into force on 29 December 2009.

Complying with MD – caring for youThe Machinery Directive is about caring for you – in linewith our company spirit. Complying, and keeping aheadof legislation, means that many of our products now havenew exciting features and benefits. One of these is the newVariable Stability Limit, VSL, which regulates capacity inrelation to stability – automatically. The better the stability, the higher the capacity. Both Hiab’s recycling and loadercranes benefit from VSL.

“The solutions we have introduced to comply with the newMachinery Directive open up new doors. The result is aneven safer working environment, lighter installations andincreased capacity in certain working areas. Three obviouscustomer benefits – wrapped in a package that respondsautomatically and is easy to use”, says Bengt Söderholm,Product Manager Hiab XS loader cranes.Heikki Puhakka, Product Manager Hiab Loglift and HiabJonsered cranes adds, “I am extremely content, especiallywith how our recycling crane series came out, and I’mconvinced our customers will be to”.

Variable stability limit – a new favourite featureMD 2006/42/EC places high requirements on stability supervision and safety. We set out, not only to comply, butto find solutions that would add value. Hence, we can nowpresent new, innovative features that make it possible tofind light and lean combinations of truck size and stabilizerequipment, combined in a unique way – to give even bettercapacity in some, critical, working areas than other craneswithout the same sophisticated solution. So, perhaps, youcan go for smaller and lighter stabilizer extensions sinceyou don’t have to refrain from crane capacity in positionswhere it is most needed. Hiab’s solutions make this possible.

Benefits and principles of VSLVSL is a safety feature – developed to protect crane operators and people in the vicinity as well as the crane and vehicle – to ensure sufficient stability whilst handling loads. VSL automatically regulatescrane capacity in relation to actual stability whilst working – instantly. The position of each stabilizer leg is monitored and, if necessary, capacity is reduced for certain slewing angles.

Left: VSL can push the stability limit. The greyarea marks the crane’s work area. Within theblack line this particular lorry and crane combi-nation has maximum capacity with full stability. Thanks to VSL the crane can use higher capacitiesin previously restricted sectors – here markedin green.

Right: The position of each stabilizer legis monitored and, if necessary, capacityis reduced in sectors where stabilizers

are not fully deployed.

Stabilizer indicatorsStabilizer indicators provide you with informa-tion about the stabilizers’ status. Informationis displayed on the SPACE user interfaces andon the CombiDrive2 remote control display.

Swivelling footplatesSwivelling footplates adjust perfectly toground inclination. This means that stabilizersalways support the crane in the best possibleway. The plates’ size is sufficiently large to ensure that ground pressure is below themandatory limit.

Stabilizer warning lightsThe stabilizer warning lights are fitted on topof each stabilizer leg and are visible in a 270ºfield – virtually from all positions around thecrane. The lights show pedestrians, passingtraffic and people working in the vicinity of thecrane that the crane is working.

Confirm view button for remote controlled stabilizersCranes featuring remote controlled stabilizersare fitted with an extra, precautionary, safetyfunction – a button which you press to confirmfull view of the stabilizers before you can operate them.

Left: Analogue sensors provide a steplesschange in capacity in direct response to current stability.

Different sensors give different performanceTo optimize capacity in relation to stability the VSL function uses infor-mation provided by sensors. The sensors are built-in to keep them wellshielded and ensure long life. Three different types of sensors are available. The most sophisticated solution features analogue sensors providing youwith exactly the maximum permissible lifting capacity in all situations –a real benefit for most applications. We also offer two more basic solu-tions featuring on/off sensors. The first has only one on/off sensor andis suitable for a crane that always has stabilizers extended all the wayout. The second has double on/off sensors, suitable for cranes that always have the stabilizers two-thirds out, or fully extended.

Upgraded Operator Protection System (OPS)OPS provides additional safety by defining a“virtual protection cage” which, electronically, prevents the boom from entering restrictedspace. It is now possible to customize thecage by blocking more spaces or changingtheir size. Customization is done by your localservice workshop.

The crane model determines how it can be configured. For example, some

cranes can be fitted with either type of sensor to support the VSL function

whereas some cannot. Talk to your local sales man – he will help you out.

We make recycling a safer businessOur recycling cranes are now fitted with numerous safetyfunctions ranging from swivelling footplates to stabilizerwarning lights and confirm view button. Then there arethe more sophisticated solutions that are made possiblethanks to our electronic SPACE intelligence system. OverLoad Protection (OLP) is one, Variable Stability Limit(VSL) another, Operator Protection System (OPS) a third,Automatic Dumping of Oil (ADO) a fourth.Learn more about OLP and VSL on the previous spread.

Using pinnacle of hydraulic technologyNew valves serve an important part of our updated recy-cling cranes. For instance, there is the new control valve,Valve 91M, which handles very large oil throughputs – up to 140 litres per minute with fixed pump and 180 litresper minute with variable pump. The combination of customized and pressure compensated spools provide the crane with an unsurpassed manoeuvrability and the operator with a fingertip feel when controlling the crane. Then there is the new stabilizer valve, available with fourfunctions and suitable with both fixed and variable pumpsystems, and also the new load holding valve that givesvery good control properties thanks to its ability to reducepressure peaks.

Stabilizer warning lightsThe lights show pedestrians, passing trafficand people working in the vicinity of the cranethat the crane is working.

Load indicators promote safety and long lifeOur recycling cranes are fitted with indicators to keep youupdated on the load situation and promote long life. Forinstance, load indicators show the pressure produced bythe load in both the first and the second boom whereasstabilizer indicators give information on stabilizer statusand if a stabilizer is being overloaded. These are found onthe SPACE intelligence box together with a service timeindicator which alerts the operator when the crane is duefor service. This leads to less risk of missing a service, whichin turn increases dependability and life. The service timeinterval is set by service personnel.

SPACE 3000 intelligence systemThe SPACE 3000 is our basic electronic systemfor intelligently monitoring and controllingelectronic functions. Indicators to show thecurrent situation are placed on the SPACE intelligence box by the base of the crane.

Operator Protection System (OPS)The Operator Protection System monitorssafety throughout the working area and hasan emergency feature that enables the driverto escape from a jammed situation.

Automatic Dumping of Oil (ADO)The ADO function will significantly decreasewear on the hydraulic system, lower mainte-nance costs and fuel consumption. All thisleads to a longer crane service life.

s

Fault-code indicationThe fault-code indication leads to faster repairs, at a lower cost. As a result the craneis quickly back on the job.

Confirm view button for stabilizersWhen full view has been confirmed the drivercan adjust the stabilizer as needed.

High seatThe control valve is strategically tucked in low, underneath the new, comfortable and ergonomic, high seat. This unique solution improves the driver’s safety, takes away disturbing heat, and minimizes the turning radius.

New features: Timberhandling cranesSafety updatesHence, our timber handling cranes now has swivellingfootplates to properly support the crane even on inclina-tions, a button to push to confirm full view of stabilizersbefore moving them and also a fully automatic lock on thestabilizer beam to prevent the stabilizers from sliding outwhile the truck is on the move. Our timber handling cranes also has a new Cabin WarningIndicator to be placed inside the truck cabin. The CWIalerts the driver in case the boom is not in parking position. It comprises warning light, buzzer and “snoozer” to temporary switch off the warning. Without CWI thebodybuilder needs to connect the signals from the TruckWarning Interface (TWI), mounted on the crane, to someother visible and audible warning system in the cabin.Altogether, these are features that add to the overallsafety – which is exactly what the Machinery Directive isall about.

A safer workingenvironmentCaring is in our company spiritHiab cranes have always combined safety and productivity, the twomost important issues for crane users. Going back to the 1940s EricSundin, the inventor of the loader crane, went to great lengths toprevent accidents and boost efficiency. He knew what he was aimingfor because he was not only the inventor but also an end user of thismagnificent machine. You can rest assured that, throughout theyears, we have kept working in the same spirit – continuously striving to develop end users’ safety and productivity. The Machinery Directive stems from the same customer-orientedperspective. Now we put the new Machinery Directive into practiceby equipping our cranes with several new features – for your safetyand productivity.
