Hibiscus Coast Progress & Sports Assn PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hi everyone, As always there is lot to talk about, but I will keep it short. Our secretary Dee Hacking has not been well of late and is unable to continue in the role. We are on the lookout for a new Secretary and I am very confident we have a willing and capable replacement but at this stage that is not official. You will see the latest news on this on our Facebook page. We continue to have some great volunteers working towards improving our little piece of paradise, with Judy Cappelo doing a great job organizing the Family Fun Day with Dee and myself. Unfortunately, our communication with the One in charge of the weather did not go to plan requiring us to postpone the event. The new date is the first Sunday of the school holidays, September 22 nd . More news to come, next month. There is a great crowd at the Camp Ground at present and this has increased our traffic in the area, so drive carefully as you enjoy living in this fabulous area. Hello Seaforth Community! One thing I have noticed from living in Seaforth is that we have a great community. People are kind, supportive and hard working. I have observed that the general population just want to live a good life and do the right thing. Generally speaking, most offences that have been committed are not by ‘locals’, but of those coming from out of town.

It is important that as a community we continue to show an example of how we do things here in Seaforth. Take those who are potentially at risk of ‘falling of the track’ or making unwise decisions under our wings. As a result of a traffic crash on George St, Seaforth a 35 year old male from Mount Julian was charged with mid-range drink driving for which he will appear in the Mackay Magistrates Court on the 13

th August 2019. He also lost

his driver’s licence and was also issued with an infringement notice for careless driving. Road Safety Week will be upon us from the 26

th of August 2019 – 30

th of

August 2019. Please be advised that police will be out and about focusing heavily on the FATAL FIVE

Seatbelts Speeding Fatigue Distraction Drink and Drug Driving

Don’t get caught out as these are enforceable 24/7. Finally, we have been experiencing an increase in road traffic during the cooler seasons. For those that are travelling on the roads, this is harvesting season for our cane farmers. There will be an increase in heavy vehicles transporting cane from properties along Gormleys Road and along Yakapari Seaforth Road. These large vehicles need much more room to turn so keep clear as much as possible. Only overtake when it is safe and legal to do so. Stay Safe and Keep it Real!

Also put the ID Number on paper or cardboard in a plastic zip lock bag in case it gets wet which could make it difficult to read.

More than $300,000 to aid bushfire recovery Communities along the Hibiscus Coast went through a terrifying time late last year when more than 100 fires caused widespread devastation, including the loss of one life, numerous buildings and vehicles destroyed, and more than half a million hectares burnt out. People were fighting fires for days and there was a massive impact on crops, livestock and property.

These communities will get a helping hand to recover from the bushfires with more than $380,000 now approved for community recovery measures. This is the first round of Category C recovery grants and a second round of funding is expected to open in October. This funding will help groups to recover and be better prepared for future events. The grants are jointly funded by the Commonwealth-Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Approved recipients are:-

Mackay Regional Council – Emergency Resilience Officer $100,000

Mackay Tourism – Agritourism forum $ 15,000

Reef Catchments – Bushfire management $ 88,600

Crediton Hall Recreation Club – Design for new hall facility $ 40,000

Finch Hatton Airstrip Association – Upgrades to emergency airstrip $ 39,183

Finch Hatton Progress Association – purchase of UHF radio system $ 19,500

Finch Hatton Progress Association – purchase of aviation transceivers $ 3,000

Greater Whitsunday Food Network Inc – Strategic Action Plan delivery $ 77,400

The second round of the Flexible Funding Grants program will offer an additional $4.9 million and is expected to open in October. Tax relief takes effect Mackay and Hibiscus Coast residents were among the 68,000-plus low and middle income earners in the Dawson electorate who began to receive immediate tax relief last week. The Morrison Government’s better tax system ensures low and middle income earners in the region will keep more of what they earn and have more money in their pockets. This will ultimately boost household consumption, which will be good for the overall economy. Those earning up to $126,000 will receive up to $1,080, and dual income couples will receive up to $2,160. The tax package provides a further $158 billion in tax relief, building on the already legislated Personal Income Tax Plan that we announced in the 2018-19 Budget. The Government has also locked in the benefits of low and middle income tax relief by increasing the top threshold of the 19 cents in the dollar tax bracket from $41,000 to $45,000 and by increasing the low income tax offset from $645 to $700 in 2022-23. In combination with the legislated removal of the 37 per cent tax bracket in 2024-25, the Government is delivering structural reform to the tax system by reducing the 32.5 cents in the dollar tax rate to 30 cents in the dollar. Together, these tax relief measures will create a flatter and better tax system that will improve incentives for the hard workers of our region. It will also ensure that 94 per cent of Australians will face a marginal tax rate no higher than 30 cents in the dollar in 2024-25. More dollars in seniors’ pockets More than 5,500 pensioners in my electorate will benefit from the cut to pensioners’ deeming rates, which will mean more money in the pockets of older Australians. The decision to cut rates will take effect from September in line with the regular indexation of the pension and will be backdated to July 1. Under the new rates, age pensioners whose income is assessed using deeming that is, only those not getting the full pensions – will receive up to $40.50 a fortnight for couples, which equates to $1,053 extra a year, and $31 a fortnight for singles, equating to an extra $804 a year. The deeming rate on the first $51,800 of a single pensioner’s financial assets, and the first $86,200 of a couple’s, will drop from 1.75 per cent to 1 per cent. The deeming rate for the balance will go from 3.25 per cent down to 3 per cent. Changes to the deeming rate will also benefit people receiving other income tested payments including the Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment, and income support allowances and supplements such as the Parenting Payment and Newstart. New-look Neighbourhood Hub What was formerly The George Street Neighbourhood Centre and Shakespeare Child and Family Centre has now become The Neighbourhood Hub. The centre has a fresh new look but still provides a great range of services for the Mackay community, with programs for financial wellbeing, family support, multicultural community, driver education, emergency relief and much more. The Hub’s phone number (4957 2626) remains the same but all emails should now be sent to [email protected].

SEAFORTH TOWN RURAL FIRE BRIGADE

We have all at sometime enjoyed a fire on the beach in the cooler months. But now, you MUST get a PERMIT TO BURN, from your respective Fire Warden. One of the requirements on the Permit, states that a beach fire must be extinguished, and the sand thoroughly wet down with water. The hot sand can take up to 12 hours to cool, and is extremely dangerous for young children. Seaforth Town has had three call outs in three months to wet down beach fires. We have been busy conducting CONTROLLED BURNS along local roads to reduce the grass fuel, in preparation for the warmer dry months ahead. Please drive slower if entering those burns, smoke signs are placed well before the fire front, and Volunteers are on the road side. All fire vehicles will have flashing lights turned on .

We ask that you ALWAYS ring 0 0 0,

and not local members of our Fire Brigades.

WANTED We would like to invite any local teenagers from 12 to 18 years old who would like to learn a few new skills (customer service, food preparation and handling monetary transactions.) At the same time as gaining this valuable experience have some fun with friends and make new friends. This will be achieved by helping at the Sunday BBQ at the Seaforth Markets. These skills and activities look really good on a resume as well as being pretty good fun. All money that is raised is going back into the community with the main focus being on the Seaforth Youth Group themselves. So far, the money raised has been used to fund the Youth group food and fees for the Saturday nights at the sports centre. The monies raised at the BBQ has also been used to contribute to the lights installed at the BMX track park. Other things in the planning stages are events such as movie nights and dinners, trips to Airlie Beach or just facilities that the group can see a benefit for them to access. If you would like to get involved please phone Len Turvey 0429 897 045 or come to the Youth Night the first Saturday night of the month at 5:30 pm at the tennis courts or phone

WANTED Willing parents who would like to give their teenage children a head start in the future. This will require a bit of effort, but the pay back can and will be enormous. It will require parents to get up early approximately one Sunday a month and bring their teenage children down to the markets. It may also require once every couple of months staying for a couple of hours to help with BBQ and set a great example for your teenage children.

Please contact Len Turvey 0429 897 045 to register your interest.
