Tour to Alta Vista Gardens. 18 October

This tour conflicted with the funeral Of Jack Davis, Cathy Risings

father, so I could not attend. No one else sent pictures or a report.

Proposed Driving Tour to Joshua Tree N.P.

Mac and I are planning a trip to Joshua Tree N.P. for the weekend of February 7/8, 2015.

Mac is involved with the Saturday and Sunday tours in and around the park I am working on

a route to enable our Model T's to be driven from home to the weekend tour.

Rather than driving there and back in a single day, we propose to take a more leasurly

approach with two days to get there, two days in the park and two days to return.

The route out would allow everyone to leave from their individual homes on Thursday 5

February and all meet for a lunch at the cafe near Lake Henshaw. In the afternoon we will drive

to Borrego Springs and stay in a motel, such as the Borrego Springs motel ($75). Next day we

would traverse the Badlands, them on to Mecca (Plaza Garibaldi Restaurant for lunch?) and enter the

Joshua Tree Park at the southern entrance and arrive at the Holiday Inn ($100) at Twentynine

Palms.

Saturday morning is undecided but we will visit Keys Ranch in the afternoon.

Sunday is still being planned.

On Monday, February 9, the intrepid drivers would leave Twentynine Palms for lunch in

Palm Springs and spend the night in Palm Desert, maybe at International Lodge. ($75). On

Tuesday we would climb HWY74, lunch at Lake Henshaw and return home.

Thursday Feb 5 Home to Borrego Springs 64 miles

Friday Feb 6 Borrego Springs to Twentynine Palms 121 miles

Saturday Feb 7 Visit Keys Ranch starting at 1:30 pm.

Sunday Feb 8

Monday Feb 9 Twentynine Palms to Palm Desert 60 miles

Tuesday 10 Feb Palm Desert to Home approx 109 miles

These plans are very provisional and Mac and I welcome all comments

Not having much in the way of tours, I thought I would add the write-up from the October Speedster Run

from Escondido

TonyB

2014 Speedster Run - Temecula

This was the 27th Annual Speedster Run organized by the MTFCSD. This year it was run out of the

Riverside town of Temecula, however most of the route was in northern San Diego county.

The event started at the Motel 6 in Temecula on Saturday 25th October, some 22 speedsters and a couple of

regular Model T's, called "other", had signed

up. However as is often the case, a couple

dropped out due to family problems. The

Saturday warm-up run took the cars a quick

20 mile run into the hills to the west of town,

ending at the home of John & Karen Pepe for

a BBQ. We lost a couple of cars on this run,

but most made to the Pepe's home. Their

home is car enthusiasts dream, with more

square feet of classic cars than house, and the

garage is full of beauties. John's son was in

charge of the BBQ grill and the goodies

provided by Karen, Heather Bowker and

Cathy Rising were enjoyed by all.

Sunday was a usual Southern California autumn morning and eighteen speedster and two "others" itching to

tackle the 120 mile route, which included a 6000 foot hill..... Promptly at 8:30, following a drivers

meeting, when they were advised to top up with gas in Fallbrook, Greg Rising flagged them off at one

minute intervals, the mighty speedsters roared off towards De Luz and then Fallbrook. This year Greg had

come up with a Traffic Signal which switched from Red to Green to indicate time to leave. At Fallbrook

Judy & John Burrell and Jerry & Ana Yeadon provided coffee and donuts. Naturally, Howard did not

listen and ran out of gas at Palomar... After Fallbrook, the route took them down Hwy 395 and then up to

Valley Center, Pauma Valley and then up South Grade of Mt Palomar to the Observatory parking lot where

Jim & Gene Train and Mark & Kim Ferguson provided soft drinks and Heather's cookies. The route took

them down East Grade, then back West along to Pala, where most cars lost a lot of time following a very

slow Motor Home. In Pala, Janna Laughon and John & Jonnie Szakas ran a Stop and Go checkpoint, then

the cars ran back north into Temecula to the Denny's for a late lunch.

Along the way we lost four more cars, two with rod knocks, one to a gas

line problem and one undisclosed.

Following lunch, Tony thanked all the volunteers for their efforts. Then

he thanked Gene Carrothers who had provided every entrant and every

volunteer with a bag of "Mothers" car cleaning products. Eventually all

the results came in, the last checkpoint held open until the very last car

came through. The cars were all a little slower than the bogy time this

year, averaging less than 30 mph. It must be due to that 6000 foot hill. In

third place were Nancy & Eric Nelson from Kanab, second was Craig &

Lois Leech and the winners this year were Billy & Cheryl Shumate. This

Page 8: Hidden Valley Commutatorclubs.hemmings.com/hvmtc/Newsletters/news_2014... · November 2014 Hidden Valley Model T Club Commutator Page 5 For Sale 100 YEAR OLD MODEL T 1914 Model T

is a repeat of last years result and they dedicated the win to their son who passed earlier this year, such a

great loss.

Everyone appeared to have a great time, though those who broke down were a little subdued, anticipating a

good deal of work before the next event. Finally I would like to thank Chuck West for attending to many

administrative details and Greg Rising, without his tremendous help, the event could not take place.
