A pioneering approach to polyurethane

In the 1960s scientists working for organizations that now form part of Huntsman, pioneered the development of methyl diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). Today, Huntsman maintains a deep understanding of this versatile chemistry.

Through a program of continuous innovation, the business remains at the forefront of prepolymer development. Working closely with customers to support their formulation, processing and handling requirements, Huntsman chemists provide practical advice and technical support on the use of MDI in a vast array of markets and applications, including high performance adhesives.

High performance adhesivesMDI from Huntsman can be used in the formulation of one- (1K) and two- component (2K) adhesive systems. Suitable for industrial and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) bonding tasks, the resulting polyurethane resins can help overcome the most complex assembly challenges. Tough yet elastic, and with the ability to flex with substrates as they move, expand and contract, polyurethane adhesives create long lasting bonds with engineering materials such as concrete, plastic, metal and wood.

Wood adhesivesAdhesives have been employed for centuries in the production of wooden items. They are a standard joining technique in furniture fabrication; are widely used across the construction sector in joists, beams and panel applications; and also add value in niche industries such as the marine sector in decking, jetty and boat building projects.

With increasing global awareness of the need for sustainable, ecological products, wood usage in engineering and construction applications is intensifying. This in turn is driving up demand for polyurethane-based structural adhesives – a successor to first generation formaldehyde systems.

Polyurethane products are well known for their strength and versatility in structural wood adhesive applications. They offer many technical and engineering advantages including:

Exceptionally strong bonding of wood and superior ageing properties

Adaptable curing speeds that can be fine tuned to suit fast and slow cure assembly techniques

Good, deep wetting and uniform penetration properties creating a large bonding interface

Excellent reactivity with water naturally occurring in wood, creating strong crosslinks that add to overall adhesive strength.

Huntsman has developed a family of MDI-based resins that are the ideal raw material to use in the manufacture of adhesives for load bearing timber systems such as structural joists and beams. Based on the company’s established SUPRASEC® resin technology, the portfolio contains three products – each designed to cure at different speeds.

SUPRASEC® 2144 is a 1K, moisture curing pre-polymer with a slow cure profile. Developed specifically for customers that need a longer open time and pot life during assembly, the resulting adhesive bond offers excellent mechanical properties.

SUPRASEC® 2244 is an established isocyanate that has been widely used in the production of 1K wood adhesives for a number of years. Renowned for its mechanical performance capabilities it has a medium open time of around one hour.

SUPRASEC® 2944 is an ultra fast, 1K, moisture curing prepolymer that has an open time of less than ten minutes. Pushing the boun daries of resin technology it achieves very quick green strength and through-cure without jeopardizing any of the physical performance properties expected of a SUPRASEC® product. It is ideal for high- speed line processing.

SUPRASEC® performance against EN 204

All three SUPRASEC® products were tested using standard EN 204 for structural wood adhesives. The following graphic gives an overview of each of the adhesives’ relative strengths measured at different stages of the EN 204 testing process.

The graph provides strong evidence that each of the three SUPRASEC® resins can pass the D4 norm and outperform current industry expectations in a number of different test scenarios. All three isocyanates demonstrate lap shear strength of 10 MPa and above upon full curing. In addition:

After four days submersed in cold water (20+/-5°C) lap shear strength remains over 4 MPa Lap shear strength after a six hour boiling test, followed by two hours immersed in cold water, stayed in excess of 4 MPa.

Industry standards: DIN EN 14257 (WATT-91)

DIN EN 14257 (also known as WATT-91) is the prevailing standard for determining heat resistance for applications in the wood industry. The parameter for heat resistance of an adhesive is the breaking load tensile shear strength at 80oC in N/mm2, which must be measured using standardized criteria.

DIN EN 14257 / WATT-91 does not require minimum values. It is a neutral assessment. However, a value of 7.5 N/mm2 is often cited as a recommendation or a minimum re-quirement regarding heat resistance when producing window frame squares. (Source; IVK)

Measurements performed on SUPRASEC® 2144, 2244 and 2944, using DIN EN 14257, show that all three products pass the 7.5 N/mm2 recommendation value in fi-gure below.
