From the Rabbis Study . . . ‘Think Camp’
―Think camp‖ is one of my two favorite mottos from Camp Harlam, the other being, ―where friends
become family.‖
But why should we ―think camp?‖
Camp is the perfect vehicle to create a positive and lasting Jewish identity among our youth. If we care
about the future of our Temple Shalom children, then we should send them to camp.
Campers create lasting Jewish memories at Harlam and other Reform camps around the country. They
build lifelong friendships; they live according to Jewish time; they celebrate Shabbat outdoors with guitars and
uplifting music; they challenge themselves emotionally and physically—growing as a result—and they participate
in over 100 activities. They become better human beings, and have fun in the process.
Named for Betty and Joseph Harlam, Camp Harlam was founded in 1958. This beautiful, state-of-the-art
facility, located on 300 acres in the Pocono Mountains, reinforces our Reform Jewish values in a safe and nurtur-
ing environment – a kehillah kedoshah – a sacred community.
Whether a camper is sinking a three-pointer on the basketball court, dodging a shot in the gaga pit, jump-
ing—high—on a trampoline in the middle of Lake Joshua or sticking a dismount under the gymnastics tent, they
are infused with Jewish values from the staff and the rabbis who serve as faculty members.
When they ride the zip line, scale the 50-foot tower or reach the top of the climbing wall for the first time,
they are reminded of the significance of their achievements by saying the shehechiyanu blessing.
When they gather for services on Mondays and Thursdays, or for kabbalat Shabbat (to share the high-
lights of their week, recalling how they’ve grown); when they gather with the entire camp for Shabbat services
and havdalah; when they bless each other with the priestly benediction at dinner on Friday nights, they are doing
so surrounded by hundreds of Jews—a very powerful experience.
When 900 young people sing Hashkiveinu and the Shema after the camp play, before returning to their
bunks for lights out, you can see how our faith still has the power to shape lives.
Temple Shalom’s youth have attended Harlam for decades, and I hope this tradition will continue. Our ties
there run deep; we even placed one of our most precious possessions—a Torah scroll—on permanent loan to camp
in 1993. A little bit of Wheeling will always be there.
But we can do more. If your children are ready for camp, please consider sending them to Harlam next
summer; if your kids are grown, but you’re still emotionally attached to Harlam, you can support our kids through
tax-deductible donations made to Sisterhood’s Campership Fund. Either way, please speak to me about how you
can be involved.
I had a wonderful time at Harlam this summer, surrounded by energetic, enthusiastic, creative Jewish
youth. I can’t wait to return next summer, and Noa can’t wait to go back and participate in the day camp program.
Below are some photos from camp. While they cannot recreate the full flavor of the Harlam experience, I
hope they will inspire you to ―think camp!‖
Just as I wished my campers Shana Tova, I wish the same to you and yours. May 5776 be filled with
blessings, health, happiness, prosperity and inner peace.
May you and yours be inscribed in the Book of Life,
Rabbi Beth Jacowitz Chottiner

From the President’s Desk . . . .
The Temple Shalom Super Sale on August 9th was a super success!!! Shoppers were lined up out-
side the Temple doors for an hour before the sale even began. Business was brisk and everyone had a good
time.
None of this would have happened were it not for the leadership of Rachel Weinberger. Like a gen-
eral leading her troops into battle, Rachel took command and never looked back. I think it is fair to say
that Rachel has left an indelible mark on us and on our 166 year old congregation. Also, I’d like to thank
Andy Schreiber for his tireless efforts on behalf of the Super Sale and for being an incredible support to
Rachel in her herculean task. I’d like to express special gratitude to Sisterhood for giving the Super Sale to
the Temple. Most importantly, I’d like to thank those who donated items or baked goods, those who
schlepped, organized, ticketed, and worked the Super Sale. On the day of the sale, we had as many as
thirty volunteers from our small congregation show up to work. I’d like to mention each one, but I’m
afraid of leaving someone out, so I’ll just say “thank you” to everyone who helped.
For me, this year’s Super Sale was definitely a learning experience. Not only did I learn about the
Super Sale, but I discovered that worshipping together isn’t the only way to create a sense of community.
Working together, side by side, towards a common purpose also creates a sense of community. Perhaps
THIS is the greatest reward of the Super Sale. A reward that money can’t buy.

Food Drive Underway Owing to low pantry stocks at the Catholic Neighborhood Center, our High Holy Day Food Drive is under way NOW.
What we are able to raise in the next two weeks will be immediately taken to the Catholic Neighborhood Center to bolster its supplies and ease its need.
As always, please bring bags of nonperishable foods to the Temple and leave them on the table in the social hall. We’ll make sure they’re delivered to the agencies that need them.
As your social action chair, I am always heartened by the incredible way our little congregation responds to calls for assistance. I know this year will be no different.
May I be among the first to wish you shana tova. May 5776 be for all a year of health, happiness, peace
and prosperity.

Volunteers Needed for Catholic Neighborhood Center
The dates are set for Temple Shalom’s annual volunteer work at the Catholic Neighborhood Center in East
Wheeling. All we need now … is you.
As you know, Temple Shalom mans the kitchen at the CNC five Sundays during each academic year, preparing
hot lunches for people who truly need them. As anyone who has ever stepped up to do this job knows, those we
serve are grateful for all we do, and it leaves the volunteers with a good feeling inside.
In other words, it’s win-win.
This year’s kitchen dates—all Sundays—are: Nov. 22, Dec. 27, Jan. 24, Feb. 28 and March 27. We need to be
at the kitchen by 10 a.m. each Sunday. A regular Catholic Neighborhood Center volunteer will be on hand to help
us with anything we need, but these are our days of service.
As I said above, all we need now is you. Please consider volunteering for one or more dates this year. Contact
me at 908-433-7833, or at [email protected], and I’ll be happy to sign you up and answer any questions
you may have.
Feeding the hungry, or “leaving the corners of our fields” as our tradition teaches, is among the greatest of
mitzvot. As we prepare to begin a new year, please join with me in performing this commandment.
L’shalom,
Lee Chottiner
Social Action Chair

Yahrzeit Notifications
“Yahrzeit” is a Yiddish word that means “time of year.” It is a tradition in our faith to mark the passing of loved ones during the “time of year” in which the passing occurred. The observance often includes reciting Kaddish, lighting a Yahrzeit candle, and performing an act of tzedakah. In order to assist members in this solemn observance, the Temple will be mailing Yahrzeit notifications to those who have lost loved ones. Our Yahrzeit list is approximately 86 pages long. Sadly, many of the Yahrzeit names are not matched with current members. Therefore, I would ask that you take a moment to write down the names of loved ones who have passed and your relationship to them. Please mail your list to Trina at the Temple so that we may update our records. Thank you. Oneg Sponsorships . . .
As you may know, we have started a campaign to seek sponsorships of all our Friday
night oneg Shabbats. The results have been amazing! In the 30 days since the campaign was
unveiled, we have commitments to sponsor more onegs than were sponsored in all of last year.
It is especially gratifying to see so many associate members from around the country sponsor
onegs and thus play a role in perpetuating Jewish life in Wheeling. Well done!
It isn’t too late. Oneg dates are still available for September 4, 11 and 25. Call Trina at 304-233-0155 or Jocelyn at 304-242-2801 to be a sponsor.
Temple Sukkot
Join us on Sunday, September 27, at 6:00 pm
for our annual Sook-Out. Please bring a non-dairy dish
that serves 10. Hot dogs, drinks
and s’mores will be provided.
