demonstrated an unexpectedly high skill set which had enabled them to participate productively in work place projects quite effectively. This has meant that the students feel they have contributed and helped the workplace and that the employer feels that the week has been productive rather than just filling in time and having students just “watch” what they do. Mrs Nicola Brown needs much congratulation in supporting the students during this week. And the students are to be commended on their exemplary manner of participation.

Best wishes for the coming fortnight,

Br Peter CorrHeadmaster

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The front page of this edition is a collage of images related to this year’s Immersions to Cambodia and India. Also, later in this document, there is an article by Cameron Dunger and Alex Mascarenhas which describes both of the Immersion experiences from their point of view. Marist College North Shore continues to expand its immersion programs in line with increasing numbers of interested students. Typically students find the Immersion experience inspirational and often adjust their developing values of living to incorporate their learnings. Testament to this is that two of our students from last year’s Senior class have returned to Sala Lavalla school in Cambodia to spend an extended time doing volunteer work helping the children. Simon Jenkins, last year’s College Captain has just returned from this experience and Joshua Carnovale is still there.

Gauging from the participation of so many parents, the Parent/Teacher interviews were quite popular and helpful, with some teachers having 90 interviews. We are re-evaluating these sessions because they are quite a strain on teachers and also quite a number of parents could not book interviews as they left their attempt too late and teachers had become fully booked. It is not an easy set of problems to find solutions to and so we are currently canvassing other schools to find out how they manage to satisfy all parties.

Ministry Week for Year 11 is reported to have been well received not only by the students but also the placement agencies that accommodated individuals or small groups of students. This is another Marist College North Shore annual event from which students report unexpected learnings, which translate into a deeper Christian understanding about social justice issues.

Year 12 is in the middle of their Trial HSC exams. Students report they are going well but also expect that the results from the exam will help them to focus on the list of content and skills that they need to work on for the end of Year HSC exams.

Last week Year 10 participated in Work Experience. Many of their work places have reported that they would “…have a student from Marist College North Shore any day”. The employers have said that many students

Year of Grace

The Bishops of Australia have invited all Catholics in a spiritual journey to recognise God’s grace in our lives. We are reminded that through prayer and through the grace of God all things are possible. Therefore, I would like to share with the Marist community the National Prayer for the Year of Grace, most appropriate as we celebrate the anniversary of Mary MacKillop this week on the 8th August.

Page 3: High Notes - No 11 10 Aug

Gracious God,You have blessedthis ancient landwith many gifts,

especially its people.

We thank you for theYear of Grace, a time tostart afresh from Christ.

You invite us to contemplatethe face of Jesus your Son,

that we may experiencea new wave of grace,

and that the light of Christmay burn more brightly

in our lives.

Attune our hearts and mindsto the presence of your

Holy Spirit, that our Churchmay be transformed

our relationships be healed, and our nation grow in

compassion and justice.

With the intercessionof St Mary MacKillop,

who showed us new waysof living the Gospel,

We make our prayers throughChrist our Lord. Amen.

TEACHING AND LEARNINGFROM THE DEPUTY HEADMASTERYear Ten and Eight Subject Information Evening

Parents of our current Year 8 and 10 students should have received a letter outlining the upcoming Subject Information Evening on the 15th August. Year Eight will be required to attend from 4pm and Year Ten from 5.30pm. A copy of each letter can also be found in the “Student Notices” section of our College Website.

HSC Trials

The Year 12 HSC Trials continue this week and it is important that these young men try and maintain a balance within their lives to help alleviate any stress that is being caused by the examination period. Please encourage your son to take some time out from his study, play some sport or spend some time with friends and family. A good study timetable should allocate time to normal everyday activities to help create a well-adjusted approach to life.

Year Seven to Eleven Academic Awards

Congratulations to the Year 7 to 11 Semester One Academic Excellence and Commitment Award winners. It was wonderful to see so many students being recognised for their efforts in front of family members during our recent College assembly. I encourage all students to continue to strive to do their best throughout Semester Two. A list of all of our winners follows in this edition of our newsletter.

For both groups, the 2012 Immersion gave us a greater appreciation of the diversity of humanity and reminded us that ‘God created us for greater things - to love and to be loved’ (Mother Teresa).

FAITH FORMATIONImmersion 2012 - India & Cambodia

On Wednesday 27 June, sixteen Year 12 students and seven staff members boarded planes at Sydney Airport with our bags packed with shorts, t-shirts and plenty of GastroStop, ready to face the humid and challenging environments of Cambodia and India. We had ‘trusted the mystery’ long enough, and were eager to immerse ourselves in two unique cultures.

The two weeks in Cambodia provided us with a brief insight into how their society lives. Many of us were astonished by the norms of the Khmer culture, but were inspired by their gentle nature. The kids at LaValla School were overwhelmingly excited to allow us into their community and we embraced every opportunity to engage with them. On behalf of the Cambodian Immersion group, we thank Mr McDonnell, Ms Reinhold and Mr Dowe for their guidance and participation in the experience.

In India, our visits to boys’ hostels in Talit and Bolpur provided us with a greater appreciation of the simplicity and resourcefulness of Bengali culture. We were welcomed with great hospitality to the Santali villages, while the kids at the hostels warmed to us instantly as we played soccer, knuckles and ‘Grow Banana’. Our time in Kolkata opened our eyes to the poverty of the country combined with a sense of tranquility masked by hectic streets. The experience would not have been the same without the contributions of Brother Peter, Ms O’Brien, Mr Dela Cruz and Mr Versteegh, and we thank them sincerely.

Ministry Week 2012

Ministry Week is one of the most important events in the Year 11 calendar and is often said to be a highlight of a students’ time here at Marist North Shore. This year our students embraced their individual ministry work wholeheartedly and by all accounts were a credit to our community. Students were commended for their conduct, maturity and ability to become involved in all the activities that were presented to them, as seen through the evaluation reports sent back by the organisations visited, as well as the reports given by visiting teachers. Congratulations Year 11!

Ministry Week kicked off with a Ministry Week preparation day at St. Canice’s Church, Elizabeth Bay on Friday 20 July. This was an opportunity for the group to gather together to reflect on what ministry was about and to prepare themselves before they embark on their Ministry Week journey. The students were taken on a street walk around the Kings Cross area and had their eyes opened to some of the issues faced by the homeless and needy in Sydney through an interactive lecture by volunteers from ‘Rough Edges’ on Victoria Street.

Last week students were scattered throughout Sydney working as volunteers in various ministries. They worked in a vast range of organisations: aged care, people with cerebral palsy, refugees learning English, charity organisations such as St. Vincent De Paul, primary school children and children with various disabilities to name just a few. The week was drawn together with a Reflection Day at Camp Kedron, Ingelside on Friday 3 August.

The students that arrived at Camp Kedron were not the same students we met at St Canice’s Church, Elizabeth Bay on their Preparation Day. There seemed to be a more developed maturity within the students. Throughout the reflection day, students were given the opportunity to reflect and then share their experience of service in a small group. Some students were able to share their experience with the whole group. It was humbling to hear the stories the students told about their individual experiences. They presented great insights into the work they did and into the situations with which they were faced.

There is no denying the impact that this week of service has had on developing the young men involved. Fr Peter McGrath led a reflection with the students that was both challenging and affirming. As parents and teachers we should be incredibly proud of these fine young gentlemen.

I’d like to thank all the staff that were involved in the Ministry Week program this year: Br Michael Hill, Steve Versteegh, Noel Ornelas, Russell Kam, Chris Maoudis, Dianne Sandeman, Patrick Fitzgerald, Kathleen McGrath and Dawn Russell.

Laptop Issues

There has been some confusion about the role of two of the buttons on your sons’ laptop. The parent login is for parents to observe what types of programs the boys have on their computers and to look at their work.

There is also a “Parental Control” button in the preferences section but we urge parents not to usethat control as it has the effect of disabling the laptop from the school network, resulting in students not being able to use their computer properly at the College. As always, if you have any problems please contact me at the College.

Marist Cricketers meet the Australian Captain

On the 1st August, a selection of students from the College were lucky enough to meet the Australian Cricket Captain Michael Clarke. The students from the U/16 cricket team gathered at the Greg Chappel cricket centre to meet Michael Clarke who was promoting his new sponsorship with the cricket brand Spartan. Clarke had some words to say, greeted the audience and signed autographs. Fortunately students were lucky enough to receive an autograph, which was a nice gesture from Clarke and was very enjoyable to meet him. Overall it was a great experience. Brad Falconer

U13/Bs Soccer

The team had a strong start to the season with the boys ending runner up for their age group. It was through their dedication, determination and belief in one another that they were able to progress through to the Grand Final. The boys should be proud of themselves with the journey that has taken place with each of them having gained more confidence, learnt new skills from each other and formed a strong team bond that will hopefully see them be even more successful next season. Furthermore, the boys have done the school proud and will be great sporting assets in future MCC events. Team: 1. Kyler Boghossian 2. Austin Hake 3. Lucas Maya 4. Max Emanuel 5. Peter Saragas 6.
