BASKETBALL REBOUNDING–EIGHT QUALITIES FOR SUCCESSBASKETBALL REBOUNDING–EIGHT QUALITIES FOR SUCCESSBASKETBALL REBOUNDING–EIGHT QUALITIES FOR SUCCESSBASKETBALL REBOUNDING–EIGHT QUALITIES FOR SUCCESSBASKETBALL REBOUNDING–EIGHT QUALITIES FOR SUCCESSBasketball Rebounding is one of the most
critical aspects of the game. Unfortunately,it is also one of the most overlooked whenit comes to practice time.
Players often take rebounding for grantedthinking that if the ball comes their way, they'll grab it. Or a more common mistakeis that players often think rebounding is nottheir job or responsibility on the court. "I'mnot a rebounder" or "That's my teammatesjob" are phrases that are often heardamongst players.
Well the truth is, basketball reboundingis every players' job and responsibility - re-
gardless of their height or position. Everyplayer must be a rebounder on the court.
To become great at basketball rebound-ing, players should possess the eight quali-ties listed below. The good news is thatthese qualities have nothing to do with aplayers' size. Instead, they have everythingto do with their body position and balance, desire and aggressiveness.
Eight Qualities of Basketball Re-bounding
1. Pursue the basketball. Players shouldnot stand still when the shot goes up - in-stead they should go aggressively after the
ball. Great rebounders always think that therebound belongs to them.
2. Establish a good rebounding position. When the shot is taken, players mustquickly determine the following details:The shot location, the arc of the ball, andwhere the other players are positioned onthe court. Players must then move to re-bound the ball.
3. Establish proper body balance. Oncea player is in a good rebounding position, they should spread their feet about shoul-der width apart with their knees bentslightly. In this position, players can move
side to side quickly and are also in a goodjumping position. Another important pointis for players to remember to stay on theballs of their feet, not flat-footed. Again, this helps them move and jump better.
4. Box out your opponent. Once a playerhas established a good position and is ingood balance, they should then box out theiropponent. This is done by getting betweenthem and the basket as quickly as possibleand then initiating contact with them usingtheir back side. Players must be ready forcontact - rebounding is the most physicalaspect of the game. (continued on next page)

5. Possess desire and mental & physicaltoughness. Great rebounders have theattitude that every missed shot is theirrebound. They own the boards. This at-titude helps them develop an unshakabledesire and aggressiveness.
6. Properly time your jump for the ball.Once players establish good position andbalance, and firmly box out their oppo-nent - they now need to jump for the ball.A mis-timed jump can cost the player arebound. By watching the shot and thenreading where it will bounce, the player
will be more capable of properly timingtheir jump.
7. Protect the ball after the rebound. There are several ways for players to dothis: Hold the ball over their head; Chinthe ball; or Hug the ball close to theirbody. How a player protects the ball willdepend on how their coach teaches thisaspect of the rebound. The main objec-tive here is to protect the ball once it isrebounded. Don't let the opponent get itback.
8. Develop soft hands and fingertip
control. Soft hands is a term that is usedto describe a players' ability to handlethe basketball regardless of how hard orsoft it comes at them. They seem to beable to control everything. Fingertip con-trol allows them to tip the rebound tothemselves or to a teammate. These arecritical rebounding qualities that giveplayers a huge advantage on the boards.

Learning How To Play BasketballDefense properly helps teams becomemore successful. I'm sure everyone hasheard the saying, "Defense wins cham-pionships". That's a very common state-ment when describing the most success-ful teams in basketball - at all levels ofplay.
As many times as we've heard thatsaid and actually proven on the court, most players and coaches still don'tmake defense a top priority when de-
HOW TO PLAY BASKETBALL DEFENSE: 10 TIPS FOR SUCCESSveloping their game. Why is that?
Well to start, learning how to playbasketball defense is hard work! Sadlyenough, most players and coaches aren'twilling to put in the time and effortneeded to become successful on the de-fensive end of the court. The other rea-son most players and coaches aren'tdedicated to improving their defensivegame is that it isn't as fun as other as-pects of the game.
Yes - shooting, dribbling, passing and
the other aspects of offense are oftenmore enjoyable to teach, learn and prac-tice. So...that's where most players andcoaches focus their time and effort. Butin order to become complete and well-rounded in all aspects of the game, play-ers and coaches must dedicate a por-tion of their time on learning how toplay basketball defense. It's critical totheir success!
The ten criteria I have listed belowwill help determine whether a player
can be considered a complete defensiveplayer. This is helpful for coaches andplayers alike. How so?
Well, coaches can use these criteriato help develop their approach to thedefensive game. They can use it as afoundation for success. Players can usethis information to help them focus onthe importance of becoming a defen-sive specialist! Again, they can use thisas their foundation for success on thedefensive end of the court!

Rebounders use various basketballpasses to throw to an outlet player -which is the initial step of initiatingthe fast-break. Offensive playersmust use a variety of passes when ex-ecuting an inbound pass.
It's easy to see how important thepass is to the offensive players on thecourt. Every player must be able topass the basketball effectively and ef-
ficiently in order to help their teamsucceed. In order to do this, they musthave strong fundamentals and tech-niques. They must also practice bas-ketball drills that work on a variety ofpasses as well as passing situations.

importance these dos and don'ts haveon their effectiveness as a passer. Theplayers that are able to implement oreliminate these tips will become ex-tremely successful at basketball pass-ing!

These Basketball Shooting Tips are agreat way for players, parents & coachesto learn and understand the proper me-chanics and techniques needed to be agreat shooter.
Every basketball player loves to shootthe ball! The most practiced skill in thegame is shooting. Coaches spend a gooddeal of their practice time on shootingdrills to improve their players' skill level. After all, if you can't shoot - you can'tscore!
Whether a player is shooting a jumpshot, lay-up, or free throw - there are

1. Players should always use propershooting techniques. RememberingBEEF - (Balance, Eye, Elbow, Follow-Through) will help when shooting thebasketball. Players must get into thehabit of always using these proper shoot-ing techniques - whether in practices ora game. If proper techniques are notused, bad habits are formed that are of-

2. Players should always be relaxedand concentrate on the basket. Playersshould focus on the part of the rim thatis closest to them as they shoot the bas-ketball. When shooting lay-ups and bankshots, players should focus on the partof the backboard where they will bankthe ball.
3. Players must know when they havea good shot - and then take it. Playersmust find the right balance between
shooting too often and not shootingenough. As players develop confidencein their shot, they will also develop theability to know when they have a goodshot to take.
4. Players should be in proper balancewhen shooting the basketball. Properbalance (front to back and side to side)is critical on all shots.
5. Players should follow through onevery shot they take. They should alsohold their follow through as this is onething that will show them why they made

BASKETBALL SHOOTING: 10 VALUABLE TIPS TO BECOMING A BETTER SHOOTER!(continued from previous page)
or missed the shot.6. When shooting the jump shot, play-
ers should jump naturally. They shouldavoid forcing their jump - it should benice and easy. Players should jumpstraight up and release the shot at the topof their jump. "Up, Hang, Shoot" is aneasy way to remember this.
7. Players should have an arc on ev-ery shot they take. The height of the arcwill vary from player to player. Someplayers shoot with a high arc, while oth-ers have more of a flat shot. As long as
the player is using proper shooting tech-niques and the shots are going in, thenthe arc is fine.
8. When shooting free-throws, play-ers should be relaxed, concentrate on thebasket, and have their knees bentslightly.
9. When shooting free-throws, play-ers should keep their routine simple. Thishelps them concentrate more on theirshot and not their routine. They shouldavoid excessive and unnecessary move-ment. They should only use the motion
needed to take and make the shot.10. Players should practice all of their
shots. They should learn to shoot fromany location on the court, within theirrange. By doing this, they become moreof an all-around shooter. Players shouldstrive for the following shooting goals:99+% lay-ups, 70+% free-throws, 50+%field goals, 33+% 3-pointers. Thesegoals can be modified for younger play-ers.

A Convenient Way To Keep Young Athletes Hydrated(NAPSI)-Any way you slice it, watermelon can be a healthful snack, particu-
larly when you want to make sure young athletes are getting enough liquids.Parents are often concerned about the amount of fluids their children get be-
fore, during and after sporting activities. These liquids can come in the form ofwater, sports drinks and fresh fruit snacks, such as slices of watermelon.
As any mom or dad with a young athlete can tell you, parents of team mem-bers often take turns providing snacks for their young athletes. "Ideally, thesesnacks should be a fruit with a high water content," says Barbara Levine, Ph.D.,Associate Professor of Nutrition in Clinical Medicine and Director, Nutrition Infor-mation Center, Weill College of Medicine of Cornell University, New York, NY.
"Watermelon," says Levine, "is a favorite fruit among kids and is called thenatural hydrator because it's 92 percent water. For sports activities, watermelonserved in slices is easy for children and teens to eat. An inch-wide slice containsabout a cup of fruit.
"And watermelon is more than a delicious thirst quencher," adds Levine. "Itcontains important vitamins and phytochemicals for growing bodies. A two-cup
serving of watermelon has 20 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitaminA and 25 percent of the daily value of vitamin C. It's also a source of potassiumand a leader in the powerful antioxidant lycopene."
Keeping children well hydrated should be a priority, especially when they aremembers of competing sports teams.
Suzanne Nelson Steen, D.Sc., R.D., head of the Husky Sports Nutrition Ser-vices in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Washing-ton in Seattle, offers excellent advice on the subject on the Web sitewww.momsteam.com. "Kids should drink on a schedule, not just when they arethirsty," says Steen.
"By the time your child says he is thirsty, he is already dehydrated," she ad-vises. She says that children should be reminded to drink five to nine ounces ofwater (10 to 18 half-ounce "gulps") every 20 minutes during activity and teenag-ers should drink more.
Finally, Dr. Steen reminds parents that kids' fluid intake needs to be supervisedbecause children do not instinctively drink enough fluids to replace water losses.
With a little planning, you can help ensure that your children are well hydratedand happy.
