STEM It is an exciting time for Kanahooka High School with the implementation of STEM into Year 9 this year. We are currently renovating the 900 Block to accommodate the new STEM room and are hoping for it to be ready for use later this term. The STEM classes completed their first units and we had some fantastic projects produced by all students.

This term students are studying sustainable housing, and are designing, modelling and marketing a sustainable home. Students will design their homes using CAD software and later construct their own model houses.

In Term 3 students will be studying an Aerodynamics Unit using model racing cars. Mr McKay worked very hard over the holidays building a wind tunnel for this program and is currently putting the finishing touches together to have it ready for next term. This should be a fun project for all.

Science News We have a busy term ahead of us with the Semester One examinations (Years 7-11) in Week 5. Teachers have revised content with their classes and it is an expectation that students should be revising their work at home in preparation.

The Science Faculty have a huge list of activities taking place this term. Year 7 will be attending Taronga Zoo on Wednesday 31 May. This will be a fabulous day and supplements the unit of work on Classification. Please make sure you pay your money to the front office by 20 May and hand your note to the Science staffroom to secure your place.

Burners Burners will be running again this term on Wednesday 14 June from 3.30-4.30pm and is open to Year 5 and 6 students. Mr Arthur is always looking for keen and interested Kanahooka High School students to be group mentors on the afternoon. If this interests you, come and see him in the Science staffroom.

Science Fair The Science Fair will occur again in Term 3. Students have already started thinking about their project ideas. If you are unsure of where to start please see your Science teacher.

Classroom Mythbusters Mr Crighton’s Classroom Mythbusters class have been debunking myths this term, recently

experimenting with the tablecloth challenge. Students tested different materials to see, which was the

best, in ensuring the table setting was left nicely in place. Students will be testing other myths this term

and will be asked to find their favourite Mythbusters experiment to put into the running to test for the

student choice next term.

Science News Continued

Aquaponics and Agriculture Now that our green wall is completed and the aquaponics tanks are set in their places, students are eagerly growing vegetable for Winter harvest. Mr Crighton’s 8TEC class will soon be working on replanting garden beds around the green walls this term to finish off the agriculture area behind the 600 block.

Year 10 Subject Choices It is getting close to that time of year, where Year 10 students choose their subjects for Year 11. All Year 10 students have been issued portfolios to showcase their abilities for subject choices. These portfolios are being kept in the Science classrooms, however, students should be adding samples of work from all subject areas. It is important if you have any questions about subject choices, that students and parents speak to their teachers. A subject information night will be held later in the term, where teachers can give advice on student choices.

Why study Science for your HSC? There are big changes occurring next year for the Stage 6 Core Subjects, with the implementation of the new curriculum. Students often ask the question, why do we have to do Science? Science is compulsory in Years 7-10 and will be offered at Kanahooka High School as Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Investigation Science in Years 11 and 12. Studying Science enables students to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to find answers to their own questions and become better informed citizens. The global economy is changing. New technologies and smart companies lead the way. New industries and new sources of wealth are emerging. New skills are required for workers at all levels. International research indicates that 75 per cent of the fastest growing occupations now require STEM skills and knowledge. Studying Science will allow students to foster these generic and quantitative skills and ways of thinking, enabling individuals to see and grasp more opportunities.

The UOW Science Experience is on offer again. Be prepared for three days of hands-on, exciting and challenging sessions! Support Unit News

The Support Unit have been working on the elements of design in Art lessons. The first element of design

is ‘point’. Instead of using a point, they have used small circles to complete their landscape designs, with

alternating colours. These have been very successful and the students are proud of their work.

I enjoyed making it and it was interesting and challenging - Emma W

This is my first time and I found it interesting. I said I might give it a go. Doing the mountains landscape I

made a mess on the first box, but it didn’t stop me from doing art. I love doing art with Mrs Thatcher, she

is the best teacher. When my artwork was finished it looked very detailed. I wish I could do different

artwork styles - Macie D

I enjoyed making it and found it very interesting because we drew a lot of boxes. We drew mountains and

STEM Lab

Thirty new (advanced model) computers will be installed in the new STEM lab in the coming weeks with maker spaces and workbenches for students to get creative with Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics.

Passwords, Vivo & OnGuard

Have you forgotten your portal password?

You can see Mr Harding in the Library as he is happy to change and update your portal password so you have access to the internet. Mr Harding can also change your password for Vivo & OnGuard if it has expired.

Why does my password need to be up to date? If your password is not up to date:

You will be unable to check your email

You cannot connect to the school Wi-Fi

You will be unable to login to Office 365

Office 365

Students have the ability to use Microsoft Office 365 on any computer with a web browser and internet access. To access Office 365 login to student.det.nsw.edu.au - click on the + box next to Learning shown on picture below. Click on Microsoft Office 365.

Once it is loaded, you have the whole Microsoft Office Suite to use. All the files that you use through

Microsoft Office 365 can be saved to Microsoft OneDrive, which you can access from any computer with

an internet connection in the world.

Security Warning

Wannacry Ransomware What is Ransomware? Ransomware is software/worm that encrypts the files on your hard drive (usually documents and data files) so that you cannot access the files unless you pay the ransom to the people responsible.

How does it infect or spread? Usually by unsolicited emails. Once one computer is infected, it looks for other computers that do not have the latest Windows updates to copy itself over to the network. Why are they doing this? The general aim for Ransomware originally, was to make money through the online “bitcoin” currency.

What should I do if infected? If your hard drive has been infected there is a good chance that your encrypted files are lost forever. The best way to stop these people from having any kind of control is to keep an external backup of important data so that in the event your computer gets infected you can format and re-install.

Should I just pay the ransom? It is very unlikely that if you do pay the ransom you will receive the information to unlock your files. As stated before, be prepared, it can happen to anyone. Backup your important files!

How do I backup? There are various ways that students can backup their data:

Office 365 (OneDrive)

USB/Flash Drives

External Hard Drives

WIRES Visit to Perfect Petz!! On Friday 12 May, Year 7 Perfect Petz elective class had a visit from WIRES! Ms Siobhan spoke to the students about WIRES and the roles of volunteers looking after injured and homeless native animals. They discussed many interesting aspects about our local Australian fauna and even got to cuddle a few (of the toy variety!)

Principal’s Report

Wow this term is so busy!

I have had so many positive comments from the community, both in Dapto and Wollongong about how professional our students look in their uniforms. I smile and say, “Thank you, did you expect anything less from us?”

Our grounds continue to look fantastic and I would like to thank our staff and students for caring about our school and creating a great environment for all of us to be in, to learn in and to grow in.

We have had some changes in the school. Kullillah has moved to the top of the 300 Block. This program of academic and wellbeing support for all students and staff to improve, has grown at an amaz-ing rate. It has grown so much so, it needs more space to fit everyone in!

The 900 Block will become the STEM room. We are looking forward to seeing it transform to meet student needs.

The TAS Faculty are now all in the 100 Block celebrating teaching and learning together.

Can I ask parents to please pay the school fees as soon as possible. We are moving into a new financial program and would like to ensure all of our administration areas are completed. This includes fees. If you need any assistance in this area please contact the school.

As the colder weather approaches please ensure that your child is in full school uniform. Again, if you need assistance to purchase uniform contact the Deputy Principals. Ms Toohey Principal Transition to New Financial System

Kanahooka High School will be transitioning to the new NSW public schools’ finance system. What this means for students and parents is that from 30 June 2017 we will not be able to receipt any payments in any form, be it cash or cheque or POP (on-line). Our new system is scheduled to be up and running some time in August. We will keep you up to date with the progress and advise when we can start receipting again. School invoices will be issued shortly, and we ask if you can make any payments, be that part of, or in full by 30 June.
