Course Catalog 2014-2015

Dear Students & Parents: This guide serves as a planning tool as you make important decisions about future academic and professional goals. Included is information on graduation requirements, post-secondary admissions and course descriptions. We want your success in secondary education to be based on your understanding of the scope and sequence of choices in all academic areas. Selecting appropriate courses requires careful consideration. Schedule changes are only made for credit/course deficiency, computer error or inappropriate placement. Choosing the right courses that align to your future is an important step in achieving your goals. We encourage you to think deeply about your choices and if necessary plot out a multi-year plan. We continually revise our course options to meet student interest. This year there are many new and exciting courses including Project Lead the Way courses in Engineering (Introduction to Engineering Design and Robotics) and the Biomedical Sciences (Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Human Body Systems), AP Computer Science and Speech & Debate. Explore new areas and consider a balanced program. Be sure you consult with your family, school counselor and teachers to help you develop an educational plan that best meets your immediate and future goals. Carefully considered, informed choices ensure a successful school experience. Go Viks! Eric Brubaker

Student-Initiated Schedule Changes

The choices made by students during registration are considered to be final. We plan our courses and staffing for the upcoming school year based on those choices. Schedule change requests from students will be allowed during a set period of time prior to the beginning of the semester using an Add/Drop form located in the Guidance Office for these reasons:

a senior needs a specific class for graduation

a student’s schedule is incomplete

a student is in a class for which she/he has not met the prerequisite

a student is placed in a course not requested and an alternate class can accommodate an additional student

a teacher recommends the student move to a different level within the same discipline

Please note: Students who drop a class after the first 10 days of the semester will receive an F.

Course Load Each student is encouraged to take advantage of the wide variety of learning experiences that Curtis High School offers to enrich his/her education. Unless otherwise approved by the principal, students in grades 9-12 must take a complete schedule of six classes each semester.

Graduation REQUIREMENTS Curtis High School

Course Catalog 2014-2015

University Place Graduation Credit Requirements

To graduate, students must develop a plan on how they will meet the high school graduation requirements and

what they will do following high school. A student’s plan, which ideally should be started in eighth or ninth grade and

revised as he/she moves forward, should include the classes needed to

prepare for a two- or four-year college, apprenticeship, career or technical school, certificate program or the

workforce.

Culminating Project

To graduate, all students must complete a culminating—or senior—project. Each school district determines the guidelines

students must follow to complete this requirement. Questions about the culminating project guidelines should

be directed to the high school or school district office.

CAA/CIA

Beginning with the Class of 2015, students must pass English Language Arts (or Reading and Writing), Math and Science exams to earn

a CAA or CIA and diploma. The CAA and CIA (for students receiving special education services) tell families, schools, businesses and colleges that an

individual student has mastered a minimum set of skills by graduation.

Prepare to Succeed in College AP courses can help you acquire the skills and habits you‘ll need to be successful in college. You‘ll improve your writing skills, sharpen your problem-solving abilities, and develop time management skills, discipline, and study habits.

Earn College Credit and Placement More than 90 percent of four-year colleges in the United States and colleges in more than 60 other countries give students credit, advanced placement or both on the basis of AP Exam scores. By entering college with AP credits, you‘ll have the time to move into upper level courses, pursue a double-major or study abroad.

How Do I Enroll? Once you‘ve decided to take the AP challenge it‘s easy to enroll. Find an AP Course in the catalog. Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Career and Technical Education supports and guides all students, whether you need or want to go straight to work following graduation, or you already know that you are headed for a two- or four-year college. Educators, guidance counselors and parents can use CTE to help any student plan ahead, for two- or four-year college degrees, for industry certifications or for registered apprenticeship options. CTE can help students get a head start on earning college credits and specific options sometimes provide immediate career preparation as well. For more information about CTE, go to www.upsd.wednet.edu/CHS. Click ―College and Career‖, Click ―Career & Technical Education‖

Accessing College Credit through Tech Prep

Many Career & Technical Education courses provide students with no-cost college credit at local community/technical colleges through Tech Prep. This opportunity allows students to earn both high school and community/technical college credit for completing high school courses. The curriculum is aligned so high school students master the same competencies as college students.

Successful completion of these courses at Curtis High School with a ―B‖ (3.0) or higher entitles students to earn college credit as established by the college and high school instructors. There is no cost for college credits, and there is no additional registration fee required. Participating colleges include: Tacoma Community College, Pierce College, Bates Technical College and Clover Park Technical College. Credits are posted to transcripts during the summer following the school year they were earned. Credits appear on the transcript just as credits earned on the community/technical college campus.

While there is not specific guarantee that these credits will transfer to ALL colleges, former students have used their marketing skills in successfully transferring these credits to their benefit when applying at various colleges. Students should check with their advisors or the admissions office of specific colleges with any concerns. For more information check the Pierce County Careers Connection website at: www.pc3connect.org NOTE: Credits are updated for each school year.

Project Lead the Way (PLTW)

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education curricular programs used in schools. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, PLTW exists to prepare students for the global economy through its world-class curriculum, high-quality professional development, and an engaged network of educators, students, universities, and professionals. PLTW‘s comprehensive curriculum has been collaboratively designed by PLTW teachers, university educators, engineering and biomedical professionals, and school administrators to promote critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and real-world problem solving skills in students. RUNNING START Curtis High School Course Catalog 2014-2015

Running Start (Community College)

Running Start offers qualified juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn high school graduation and college credits by taking approved courses at a community college without paying tuition. To be eligible for this program, students must 1) have earned the 11 credits necessary for junior status; 2) demonstrate readiness for college-level study through their performance on a college placement exam; and 3) meet course prerequisites. High school students are deemed ready to do college-level math coursework if they place in Math 107, 140 or 147 at TCC. English 101 and Reading 100 are required at TCC for non-math courses. It is not usually advisable for students to try to transfer to the Running Start Program during the middle of the school year. The community colleges are on a three-quarter system that does not match starting times with our semesters. Students planning to take Running Start courses during fall quarter must have the application process completed by the last day of school of the prior year. See a counselor for details regarding this program and registration procedures. *Attending Running Start does not waive PE. Students are still responsible to make sure all high school requirements are met.

Culminating Project Running Start Policy All students enrolled in Running Start have two options available for completing the Culminating Project and High School and Beyond Plan.

1. Running Start students must either be enrolled in a senior social studies class at Curtis High School (American Political and Economic Foundations semester 1 and Global Perspectives semester 2) OR

2. Take the following two pre-approved courses at TCC: Service Learning Experience; and Capstone Experience (four total credits).

Running Start students attending TCC can continue to take a full academic load (15 credits) each quarter as the two aforementioned TCC classes are approximately equivalent to the workload experience through the Curtis High School culminating project/presentation. At this point, students enrolled at Pierce College, Clover Park or Bates, are permitted to enroll in the TCC courses (please note that students enrolling in two community colleges are permitted a total of 15 credits between the two schools). If and when an approved Culminating Project class is offered at Pierce, Clover Park or Bates, Running Start students will have the opportunity to enroll in the courses(s). The Curtis High School Culminating Project Program offers students the opportunity to showcase their unique accomplishments and best work, while also meeting Washington State graduation requirements.
