THE BACKGROUND

Oil and gas have been a tangling issue that influences the historical path of global economy and politics, while advanced technology and massive investment have painted the colour of petroleum industry. The recent skyrocketting oil price has placed oil and gas in the zenith of global economic and political clout, that drives an alarm of scarcity that leads to substantial efforts to find new and unexplored petroleum basins. A capital movement toward this sector proceeds at paramount figures as well. A steady evolvement of petroleum technology and management becomes imperative to face the rapid change of environment.

Indonesia, a country endowed with oil and gas resources, has experienced in having the oil and gas industry where ITB pioneered the program study on petroleum engineering on 1962 with the establishment of the Department of Petroleum Engineering to meet the manpower demand of bachelor level for engineers working in the upstream petroleum activities. In 1988, ITB extended the program into master and doctoral levels.

The program develops not only to meet the current increasing industry’s requirements, but also to face the future development of oil and gas industry. The curriculum was adjusted in order to meet the human resources qualification required by the industry which experiences rapid development in technology and management.

THE OBJECTIVES The program is intended to deepen and strengthen the student's analysis, as well as broaden the view of new and futuristic issues of petroleum engineering and economics.
