FAQs:

Q Is testing conducted with the cable on-line or off-line? A LIVE HV provides both online and off-line cable PD testing services.

The advantage of online testing is that the cable remains in service and there is no requirement for an

outage. Offline testing can provide a more sensitive PD measurement and allows TD measurements to also be recorded. Cable mapping services to pinpoint fault locations are provided by LIVE HV both online and offline.

Q Is testing conducted from both ends of the cable? A Typically, measurements are made from just one end of the cable. In certain circumstances to increase PD sensitivity LIVE HV may recommend taking measurements from both ends of the cable.

Q Are the measurements comparable with 50 Hz in-service conditions? A Measuring TD with a VLF source is a proven method that results in very accurate and repeatable measurements. The TD guidance tables in IEEE 400 are based on using a VLF source. LIVE HV field testing has shown that PD measurements are similar and comparable when using a VLF test set as opposed to a 50 Hz source.

Q Can VLF testing damage the cable? A Unlike DC testing VLF uses a sinusoidal alternating wave which will not cause space charge build up in XLPE cable.

Q Is a truck required to transport the test equipment? A No, because VLF (Very Low Frequency) is using a lower frequency than 50 Hz, less current is required to energise the cable resulting in less input power being required and a smaller test set.

Q What standards can be applied? A For VLF and TD measurements LIVE HV refers to the IEEE 400 guide for field testing and evaluation of the insulation of shielded power cable systems rated 5 kV and above.
