GazelleHighbury College is part of the Gazelle Colleges Group – a group of forward-thinking colleges that are putting entrepreneurship at the heart of your learning.

What is different about a Gazelle College?Gazelle colleges are moving away from passive, classroom learning towards an approach that puts you in the driving seat of your own College career, with opportunities to work as part of a business at the same time as gaining qualifications in your chosen subject.

How does it change my day-to-day life at college? It depends on your course but the opportunities to make the most out of your time at College will be much greater, especially when it comes to learning the work-relevant skills that will help you find and succeed in a job. Rather than being stuck behind a desk, you could find yourself brainstorming a business plan, having a tailored advice session with an entrepreneur, or staffing a pop-up shop to sell to the public.

Are there employment opportunities? At Highbury you could be part of a student-led company, run by the College and staffed by students. Now only will this provide excellent work experience, you may find yourself taking on a paid position.

I just want to get my qualifications. How is a Gazelle College going to help me? Even if you are attending Highbury for a qualification, such as A Levels, rather than a business focused course, we will still give you the chance to take part in enterprise challenges, such as Market Makers where teams compete in a national competition to develop business ideas to pitch to a panel of experts. By attending Highbury you will develop skills that you wouldn’t at any other college. Even if you don’t want to go on and start your own business, it’s a great opportunity to increase your awareness of what the workplace is like, and improve your chances of getting the job you want.

Here are some of the opportunities our enterprising students have enjoyed:Southsea Fashion WeekOrganised and run entirely by students, Southsea Fashion Week showcased the work of emerging designers from the dynamic local fashion, hair and beauty industries alongside students’ own creations. As well as showing their own designs, students got to develop their flair for event management, budgeting, sales and publicity, resulting in a sell-out run of shows.

Port Solent takeoverEnterprising students took over the day-to-day running of Port Solent’s restaurants, shops and leisure outlets for a day, dubbed the ‘Highbury Handover’. Students in Hospitality and Catering, Business Studies, Beauty and Sports all had the chance to impress potential employers with their skills. Meanwhile performing arts students entertained shoppers and media students reported live from the marina.

Market MakerMembers of the college’s award-winning enterprise society, ‘Collective Futures’, competed in the national final of the ‘Market maker’ student enterprise competition. The budding business brains pitched their idea for two innovative mobile apps at the Institute of Directors during Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Innovation Fund‘Collective Futures’ achieved further success at the annual Innovation Fund finals, held at the Google campus in London. The winning students were awarded £5000 by the National Association of College & University Entrepreneurs (NACUE), which is being used to support the students’ fledgling business projects, and will be matched by Highbury College.

Meet the entrepreneursGuest speakers are another way in which students are inspired and encouraged at Highbury College. 21 year-old multi-millionaire entrepreneur and author Jamie Dunn held a talk and workshop for students, covering his unconventional route to success, answering questions and giving his top tips for success.

WorldSkills CompetitionsAt Highbury we encourage students to get fully involved with competitions, both as a valuable learning experience and to showcase their skills.Every year, our students take part in WorldSkills, a global ‘skills Olympics’, entering competitions in a wide range of vocational areas, including Business, Construction, Hair & Beauty, Hospitality & Catering and IT.

In 2013, they joined hundreds of other students from across the country at Birmingham NEC to compete in the Skills Show, the national finals of the competition. The show aims to change the way people think about and value work-based education, skills and apprenticeships.

Highbury students competed in seven of the 61 categories – advanced Bricklaying, advanced Microsoft IT technician, advanced Microsoft Network administrator, advanced Wall and Floor Tiling, intermediate Web Development, advanced Web Development, and intermediate Plastering, and picked up a gold and silver medal.

In addition, Highbury Hair & Beauty students gave a demonstration of styles from the 1920s to 1980s, while Performing Arts students put on a display depicting their vision of the years 2020 to 2050.

HIghbury also hosted the regional finals of the competition in four areas: Web Design, Microsoft IT technician, Cisco and Beauty Therapy. Some winners of the finals may go on to represent their country at the WorldSkills international final being held in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2015.

Highbury students enter and win many other local and national competitions that run each year. We also host our own competitions and shows, such as Hair & Beauty and Fashion shows, an annual talent contest and a Dragons’ Den-style event to find the college’s top entrepreneurs.

“I had great support from my family and lecturers and also made lots of new friends during the competition.”Dan Levings BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Software Development and WorldSkills UK Gold Medal winner

Apprentices earn and learn at the same time, gaining hands-on experience and new skills and knowledge in the workplace and, in most cases, at College.Key benefits of being an apprentice include earning a wage, training alongside experienced staff, achieving qualifications, learning job specific skills, and boosting your future job prospects.

Apprenticeships follow a structured programme that leads to recognised qualifications and an overall Apprenticeship Framework Certificate. They generally take between one and three years to complete (depending on the sector).

What levels of Apprenticeships are there? Apprenticeships can be taken at three levels: Intermediate (Level 2), Advanced (Level 3) and Higher (Level 4/5). The type of Apprenticeship you choose will depend on your intended career and any experience and qualifications you may have already gained. You can progress through levels and even top up from an Apprenticeship to a degree in some sectors. Like all employees, apprentices receive a wage. Employers are obliged to cover an apprentice’s salary for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Can anyone become an apprentice?Anyone over the age of 16, who has been living in England for at least three years and is not in full-time education, can become an apprentice. To be an apprentice you must be employed in your chosen industry.

If you don’t have a job you should log on to the National Apprenticeship Service website at www.apprenticeships.org.uk and search for vacancies using keywords, job role or your postcode.

JournalismWant to be a journalist? Highbury’s no-nonsense practical training can give you the edge when it comes to finding work in the media. We have been producing some of the world’s best journalists for more than 50 years. Our success is partly down to our award-winning NCTJ Diploma, which has been the best performing FE fast-track in the UK for two out of the last three years. But it’s the multimedia training that really makes the difference.

Some of the country’s top journalists have trained here including BBC journalist John Pienaar, Emmy award-winning Mark Austin who presents ITV News at Ten and TV presenter and best-selling author Simon Reeve. More recent NCTJ graduates are working at The News, the Chichester Observer, BBC South and ITV Meridian.

What qualifications are available? We currently offer two journalism courses. Our NCTJ Diploma is a fast-track, 20-week multimedia programme that provides excellent preparation for the industry, whether you want to work in TV, radio or print. We also run an award-winning one year NCTJ Diploma at our “classroom in the newsroom” at The News in Portsmouth, and have branched out into broadcast journalism through our new partnership with That’s Solent TV and our own JAMM Radio station for 14-19 year-old listeners.

What will I learn? At Highbury we place an emphasis on practical, real-world experience. You will pitch ideas, tip-offs and stories to local and national media, while building skills and a portfolio of published work.

Where will I learn and who will teach me?Highbury boasts a professional-quality media suite, including four digital newsrooms, radio studio complex and high definition TV production facilities. Our journalism staff are all practicing professionals, many of whom have held senior positions during their careers.

On the fast-track Diploma, students also complete a minimum of two weeks work experience; on the year-long Diploma you will be based at The News and spend two days each week working as real journalists. Alternatively, if you take the broadcast option your main base will be the newsroom of That’s Solent TV. You will also get the chance to contribute to bulletins on our own JAMM Radio station broadcast online from the College.

What else does the course include? At Highbury you’ll learn by doing and feel that you’ve entered the journalism industry from day one of your course. This means hands-on training in a TV and editing suite and on location with the latest digital technology, visiting court and council meetings and real-world events and covering your own district. You’ll be getting your stories published from the start and learn from expert speakers who regularly visit the College.

“I owe an awful lot, if not everything to Highbury. The course was a bit more practical and the lecturers were brilliant - they got you really involved and motivated.”Simon Reeve BBC Presenter
