A LITTLE HISTORY: WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A VIRTUAL WORLD Visual Immersion 3-D Display Reality is but a step away Machine-based/Computer-based

environment that feels complete even when it’s not exactly

A LITTLE HISTORY: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ WAS AMONG THE FIRST

A virtual world built by

ADVANTAGES OF VIRTUAL WORLDS …

Shared real time experience Immersive nature of the environment Opportunities for real world collaboration Building and scripting Low cost or free meeting space and in-world

“gadgets” Notecards and Intellibook Social distance is both close and far Transfer of learning through to real world situations

DISADVANTAGES OF VIRTUAL WORLDS

Time zones and language barriers Technological requirements Pressure to chat and play Assumptions about etiquette Too many rules Too few rules Discomfort to the point of avoidance Comfort to the point of addiction

AFFORDANCES Scenarios, simulations and role play Team work or team building through presence or co-presence Virtual Worlds as the focus of attention (programming,

modeling, 3-D construction) (Savin-Baden et al., 2010) Enabling experiential learning activities, impractical or

impossible to construct in the real world Facilitating intrinsically motivating, authentic learning

activities Teaching skills that transfer directly to the real world

(Degarno & Lee, 2010)From Savin-Baden, M., Gourlay, L., Steils, N., Tombs, G., & Mawer, M. (2010).

Situating pedagogies, positions and practices in immersive virtual worlds. Educational Research, 52(2), 123–133 and Dalgarno, B., & Lee, M. J. W. (2010). What are the learning affordances of 3-D virtual environments?

SOME FORMAL STATS … The Australia & New Zealand Virtual

Worlds Working Group article (Gregory et al., 2014) was authored by over 30 individuals from over 20 universities

27 scholarly multi-authored papers from 2010 through 2015 on the work of the group

A wide variety of applications from history to medicine to architecture, psychology and physics are still in place in a variety of virtual worlds are detailed elsewhere (e.g., Virtual Outworlding)
