HIGHER EDUCATION INTHE COASTAL BENDThis week, I'd like to take a look at some ofthe excellent h igher educationorganizations that operate, teach, andserve our area so well. Corpus Christi andPort Aransas are home to Texas A&MUniversity - Corpus Christi, the University ofTexas Marine Science Institute, and DelMar College. Each institution bringspositive benefits to people in the CoastalBend, the state of Texas, and throughoutthe country. Texas A&M University -Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC), previouslyCorpus Christi State University, joined theTexas A&M University system in 1989. Itoffers bachelor's, master's, and doctoraldegrees in a variety of disciplines andfields. The school recently added electricalengineering to its growing list of degreeprograms this year. TAMU-CC offers one ofthe nation's top graduate nursing programsas well. The university has a strongathletics program and a burgeoning lifesciences division. TAMU-CC is also growingat a rapid pace. Momentum Village is ahousing project for upperclassmenstudents, which is estimated to becompleted this summer. Last year,TAMU-CC was selected as one of only sixcommand centers in the nation forunmanned aerial vehicle airspace by theFederal Aviation Administration. Thedesignation has enabled the Lone Star UASCenter (LSUASC) to conduct test flightsaround South Texas. This year, the Harte

Research Institute at the university wasselected as a RESTORE Center ofExcellence. RESTORE stands for Resourcesand Ecosystems Sustainability, TouristOpportunities and Revived Economies ofthe Gulf Coast States. This designation willallow Texas A&M - Corpus Christi to findand fund ways to protect and support theeconomic and environmental interests ofthe Gulf of Mexico. In 1946, the Universityof Texas Marine Science Institute (UT-MSI)was established as the first permanentmarine laboratory on the Texas Coast. It islocated in Port Aransas, Texas. With a focuson research, the Institute hosts graduateand undergraduate programs, such as FishPhysiology and Marine Biogeochemistry.The Inst i tu t e h a s c o n t r i butedgroundbreaking research and scientificaccomplishments, such as being the firstinstitution to spawn redfish in captivity.UT-MSI contributes to the community inmany ways. The Visitor Center educatesthe public on Marine Science with exhibitsand videos that depict the Texas Coast. TheUT-MSI Wetlands Education Center is anoutdoor facility on a marsh, withboardwalks and displays that inform thepublic about the local ecosystems. Guidedtours are available. UT-MSI offers a host ofprograms available to the public, includingthe Marine Science Education Film Seriesand Discussion, which is available everyMonday and Wednesday. UT-MSI alsofeatures birding classes to children everysummer. Del Mar College, which wasestablished in 1935, has a current

enrollment of over 12,000 people, andoffers a variety of associate degrees in thearts and sciences, as well as certificates ofachievements. Del Mar College was namedone of the Top Military Friendly colleges fortwo years in a row by Military AdvancedEducation, and is designated a "ServiceMembers Opportunity College." Del MarCollege offers many continuing educationand career courses for the localcommunity. Some of these classes can beapplied to Continuing Education Units(CEUs). A CEU is a kind of credit thatprofessionals can use to prove theircompletion of continuing educationcourses or initiatives.
