Public Versus PrivatePublic Versus Private There are two types of universities in the

USA: State Universities and Private Universities

State universities are funded by the state government. Tuition (the cost to attend) is much cheaper than at a private university, although usually they are very large. Every state has a state university.

Private universities are not operated by the state, although they can receive money from the state. They are much more expensive to attend, and they are usually smaller than state universities.
