Exploring Higher GroundThe faculty and presenters at Higher Ground are all individuals who have hadtheir lives deeply affected and blessed by the Writings of Mary Baker Eddy.As active members of The Mother Church, they write frequently for itsperiodicals and serve in its branch churches. While their presentations maycontain references and perspectives that are of particular interest to thosefamiliar with Mrs. Eddy, they in no way try to teach or interpret her Writings.

Higher Ground audiences are comprised predominantly of ChristianScientists, but have included some individuals who are just newly acquaint-ed with Mrs. Eddy’s Writings and a few who are involved in other religioustraditions. These last two groups of individuals have expressed deepappreciation for the witness of the Bible and Christianity they heard atHigher Ground, as well as the strong emphasis on Mary Baker Eddy’s manyexpressions of deep devotion to the Scriptures and following Christ.

Our thoughts of the Bible utter our lives.

Director’s UpdateHigher Ground strives to make a scholarly and inspirational witness to the vitality ofa biblically-grounded and Christ-centered spirituality. Many today are seeking a viewof both the Bible and Christ that is not captive to narrow interpretations, literalism,or judgmental attitudes, but at the same time invites an intimate relationship withGod and a radical spirituality beyond the proscriptions of human conventions.

Mrs. Eddy often addressed these same points in her published writings, as well as inher personal practices. I have always loved the accounts of her turning to her Bibleat times of exaltation and moments of great difficulty, opening it at random, and thenfeeling it speak to her. She spoke often of her desire that Science and Health wouldincrease the understanding of and appreciation for the Bible. Having written the Keyto the Scriptures, her eye seemed constantly on the door the Key would open. Sheonce wrote a note to herself:

If the Bible were understood, S&H would never have been written. Every inspiredsentence in the Bible has a spiritual meaning and it means nothing that the fivematerial socalled senses can grasp or interpret.

Mary Baker Eddy Library, A10245

In telling her Church, two years in a row, to follow her “only so far as she followsChrist,” Mrs. Eddy was indicating that she would never want her discovery to beinterpreted in a way that would contradict Christ-like affection and his priorities.Messages to The MotherChurch, 1901(34) & 1902(4) How important, then, fora follower of Mrs. Eddy tounderstand what it means tofollow Christ.

Higher Ground’s method and purpose are to bear witness toa grace-based spirituality that is biblically-grounded, Christ-centered, and relationship-building. The Bible and Christ’sexample teach that how we treat other people is the clear-est reflection of what we really understand –not just profess, believe, imagine or hope for – regarding God. Developingreal and authentic relationships is the laboratory for un-self-ing the motive and character of our love. In doing this wesay yes to Jesus’ invitation to “Come share my life,” and wefeel the power of the Spirit that heals. I hope to see you atHigher Ground.

I do not believe in much organization in church.

The churches are over-organized. Were I to have

charge of a church today, I should have

it founded on the Bible. I should

talk to them from the Bible. I should

direct their thought to the Bible, and I

should expect them to be obedient to the Bible.

What are people saying aboutHigher Ground Bible Conferences?

As a First Reader, I thought I knew a great deal about the Bible. However, thisworkshop opened my eyes and heart to many new insights into the Bible, making it all the more practical for everyday life.

It will operate quietly like leaven changing your old mind to the true Mind ofChrist. Being present there is experiencing the risen Christ calling you byname and out of the tomb...The Spirit flowed!! A former Roman Catholic nun.

The conference exceeded my expectations – I have learned surprising things.I liked the balance you achieved in having a CS viewpoint and yet not teaching CS…Presentations were insightful and deep and presented with love and humor. What a treat!

The opening of doors to an expanded view of the Bible made me a betterpractitioner and person through understanding how to love.

I was hungering for a Bible study that didn’t miss the healing element and yetbrought a sophisticated and accurate theological perspective that wouldteach, inspire, and motivate. This was all of the above. Christian Scientistsneed to be confident in our spiritual interpretation of the Scripture if we aresharing Christian Science with the world.

My husband, who is a fundamentalist Christian, had his whole sense ofChristian Science changed by seeing the love and understanding of the Bibleexpressed by the presenters.

It was good to see such knowledgeable people sharing their genius withoutpreaching or trying to influence. What humility and intellect combined, andhumor…Makes me want to re-stock my library and get to reading.

Instructive, inspirational and fun – not stuffy – realistic, relevant.

Great program, inspiring! (from a Presbyterian lay leader who attended with aCS friend)

It was very enlightening, and I’m only fourteen.

It was so wonderful to be with other Christian Scientists reflecting on thatwhich unites us in the Bible.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Truly life changing! It forced me to re-evaluate the manner in which I handle difficult situations. I have a lot to learn!

If you love the Bible; if you love Christian Science; if you love your church – youshould beat down every obstacle that would prevent you from being at thisConference. Come for yourself, your church, your fellow man; you will comeaway a better Christian Scientist and a better neighbor to your fellow man.

This is a wide and varied presentation of Bible history and content that impelsthe attendees to dig deeper and truly appreciate where we are now and howwe got here and where Christianity is going next – and why. Our role as individuals in the Christianity movement becomes more vital and personal.

During the past decade over two hundred married couples and a large number of sin-gle participants, have discovered that attending Celebrate Marriage! enriched not onlytheir understanding of marriage, but of all their relationships – in parenting, church, business, and community. They frequently indicated that Celebrate Marriage!increased the closeness, naturalness and immediacy of their relationship with God,and that Mrs. Eddy’s deep love for marriage became more alive to them.

With gentle humor, warmth, affection, sensitivity, honesty, and humanity, CelebrateMarriage! explores practical communication skills (the best of contemporary methodsand tried and true principles), how to heal past hurts and to genuinely forgive, andways to develop deeper and more consistent experiences of intimacy with a spouse.Privacy is always respected and no one is required to share in front of the group. AsCelebrate Marriage! is based on the spiritual foundations of the Bible and Christ Jesus’teaching and example, spouses from many different religious backgrounds haveexpressed gratitude for attending.

Educating the Affections!

An Opportunity to Support Bible EducationThe Higher Ground faculty, working under the auspices of Bible Study Seminars (BSS)– a tax-exempt corporation – is working to heal biblical illiteracy, and we could useyour help. Bible conferences are great, but they can’t reach everybody and eventuallyeven those attending have to go home. We would like to produce something of moreenduring educational value and purpose.

As was mentioned earlier in this brochure, it is our intent to produce and publish anon-denominational Bible Guide within the next two years. It would offer fortylessons covering the Old and New Testaments along with the first three centuries ofthe Christian Church. The Bible Guide would be conducive to individual and groupstudy. The cost of developing and publishing the Guide will be about $100,000. BSSis now accepting donations to support this effort. All contributions are tax deductible.

If you can help us by giving financially, know that your gifts will go directly towardsthe educational mission. BSS holds no real estate and has no permanent or full-timeemployees. Thank you so much for your partnership in prayer and giving to supportthis most important of purposes. Checks should be made out to Bible StudySeminars, and mailed to 13051 Thornhill Drive, St. Louis, MO 63131.
