STATEMENT OF NEED

3

Minority Millennials (18-35 years old) living in the Mississippi Delta, one of the poorest regions in our nation need Higher Purpose

Academy. This innovative program identifies low to moderate income participants who have a desire to improve their lives. For years,

this population has been underserved and we seek to improve the human and social capital of every participant. We believe there is

a opportunity to break the cycle of poverty by addressing the need for young leaders in the community. According to the 2016 CFED

Mississippi Scorecard 18% of young adults, aged 16-24, in Mississippi are neither in school nor employed.15% of Mississippi

households are unbanked, which hinders wealth creation. When reviewing statistics related to small business and entrepreneurship,

business ownership by race 1.21 x as high for white workers and business value by race 8.2 x as high for white business

owners. Therefore, we believe it is very important for us to remain engaged with minority millennials to change the economic climate in

the Mississippi Delta.

OVERVIEW

Higher Purpose Academy (HPA) teaches participants about important topics such as entrepreneurship,

leadership, financial literacy, and community development. The purpose of this program is to inspire upward

mobility, create long-term sustainability, and economic stimulus throughout the region. HPA equips

participants with skills needed to build local capacity, work effectively with diverse entities, and bring change

to their community. Our interactive learning environment empowers participants and connects them with

resources to improve their overall quality of life. We utilize the cohort model and host a classroom style

session for each of our focus areas. The participants attend two networking events before graduating from

the program to ensure partnerships and long lasting friendships are developed. Upon completing the

program, each participant will receive a certificate and access to free/reduced products or services from our

partners. We are utilizing this initiative to build a community of change agents across the region. Higher

Purpose Academy is an innovative program implemented by Higher Purpose Co. which is a social enterprise

designed to connect, inspire, and educate minority millennials in rural communities.
