Sales Manager’s Message

Welcome to the February edition of our newsletter – our second edition for 2018.

We achieved a major and exciting milestone in our resort, we have our first few residents! From everyone at GemLife: welcome!

Over the next few months we will continue to see our GemLife Highfields community grow, as more homes are completed and residents begin to move in. There will be plenty of social events to mark on your

calendar this year as our country club begins to make headway. The roof is being installed over the championship bowling green and the slabs are complete in the country club itself. Exciting things are taking place every day.

On a more social note, our meet and greet morning tea, held recently at The Café Abbie Lane, was a lovely

way for the residents, both future and current, to get together over a cuppa.

Are you left wondering what to do with all the wonderful books you have collected over the years? Look no further than the GemLife Highfields library.

The library will be resident operated and will host a fabulous collection of donated books. With hundreds of books at your fingertips you’ll never have a dull moment.

We provide so many different facilities in our resorts because we know that everyone has their own interests, hobbies and priorities. We try to accommodate as many of these as we can, because our main goal is to enable our residents to live the lifestyle they deserve.

The GemLife Highfields library will be a great spot to relax; curl up on one of the comfy lounge chairs and read your book, or work on a magazine puzzle. Computers with Internet connection will also available for residents to use.

What are your favourite pastime activities?

Spending time with family, we have four children and nine grandchildren. I really enjoy tai chi, reading and gardening – I like being outdoors. Neil also enjoys gardening, reading and the outdoors. Neil and I are also excited to start our caravanning adventures with Cass, our beautiful English Springer Spaniel. We plan to have a number of shorter trips before we do the big trip around Australia. We like to visit interesting and scenic places. Our favourite places are Mooloolaba Beach and the South island of New Zealand.

Neil & Lyn Frandsen

“It’s great to know we will be able to lock up with the peace of mind that our home is in a secure,

gated community.”

Soon to be residents of GemLife Highfields, Neil and Lyn Frandsen tell us about their upcoming move into the resort. After leading an eventful working life, they are now ready to set up a base, whilst continuing to travel around the country in their brand-new caravan.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves?

We are both 66 years of age, and first met each other in Brisbane. At the time, I was training as a nurse at the Mater Hospital and Neil was working in earthmoving. We have spent time living in Hobart, Canberra, and Redbank Plains when Neil was in the Police for 18 years. We then owned The Balonne Motel in St George and then Stannum Lodge Motor Inn in Stanthorpe. From there we moved to Toowoomba in 2005 and finally retired in 2017 – we have never had a dull moment! Now we are ready to downsize, we recently bought a

caravan in preparation for our semi-nomadic retirement.

How did you come to hear about GemLife Highfields?

We came across an advertisement for Living Gems Glenvale resort and thought, we would have a look. We later discovered GemLife Highfields. When we visited the resort it exceeded our expectations, the homes are a great size and the country club design looks very impressive. We have attended a few of the meet ‘n’ greet morning teas which have been a great way to meet our potential neighbours.

What floorplan did you decide to go with?

We settled on the Willow; we needed space for all our furniture and we will use the third bedroom to display our extensive Royal Doulton collection of over 500 Bunnykins and Royal Doulton Figurines in our collection. Our other spare room will be used as a guest bedroom for any family that want to stay.

What are you most excited about after you move into your GemLife Highfields home?

We are most excited about the new-found freedom we will be able to enjoy. We have always wanted to travel, but while running the motels we just didn’t have the time. Now we are retired we are going to make the most of everyday; we have quite a long bucket list to get through. It’s great to know we will be able to lock up with the peace of mind that our home is in a secure, gated community.

Bring the outdoors in with these six great tips on keeping indoor plants.

1 Why have indoor plants?

Plants purify our air and help us to breathe easier.Surrounding yourself with indoor plants is great way to maximise the health benefits plants offer us.

2 What plants should you choose?

There are a large variety of plants that flourish indoors, as long as they receive the light and water they require.

Our favourite indoor plants include:• The Bamboo Palm is a great indoor option – this variety is

low maintenance and make a lovely feature in the home.

• The Rubber plant is a timeless favourite, it is a tough and hardy option that does not require continuous direct sunlight.

• Succulents are also a fabulous indoor plant, they do not need large amounts of sunlight or watering.

• The Peace Lily is easy to care for; it is hardy, forgiving and will let you know when it needs watering; when the leaves are drooping.

3 Watering

Watering your indoor plants is a very important part of ensuring their survival. Be mindful to avoid both over watering and under watering. A good rule of thumb: place your thumb in the pot up to the first knuckle, near the edge of the pot. If the soil is dry, it is time for some water.

4 Drainage

Ensure that your pot has drainage holes in the bottom and place the pot on a saucer. Adding pebbles or bark to the bottom of your pot (about 2cm) will prevent the plant from sitting in the water in the saucer. Drainage is important to prevent the roots from rotting.

5 Fertiliser and soil composition

To ensure that your plant drains effectively, as well as pebbles or bark, you should use a good potting mix from your local store. You will also need to fertilise your indoor plant to help create a lush, attractive display. Fertilise according to requirements of your plant type.

6 Sunlight

Keep your plant in a suitable location of your home based on their sunlight requirements. Don’t leave a plant in direct sunlight that requires shady areas and vice versa.
