Old salt in his element at

    Skerryvore Lighthouse

When I returned to Oban from sea where I was a Deck

One thing became very clear, being in the most beautiful

about it, so Highland Heritage was born.

followed by the Dalmally Hotel not long after. The

yearning to build my own hotel eventually came to

fruition in 1992, with the completion of the Ben Doran

make the most of the spectacular views across the

mountains of Argyll and Perthshire. The grand old

Alexandra Hotel on Oban’s esplanade, which was

carefully and painstakingly renovated, was the latest

purchase in the Highland Heritage portfolio.

We are based in the heart of Argyll in the village of

hotels are run. This is a great central point from where I

can keep a close eye on the entire operation at Highland

Heritage. It also allows me the opportunity to spend time

with our guests and sometimes enjoy a tour with them,

Our philosophy is simple and focused on combining

unbeatable value for money with unforgettable visitor

experiences and high standards of customer care. Theconstant stream of positive customer testimonial we

receive is all the validation we seek.

We are also proud to say that Highland Heritage has won

many accolades over the years. This shows the great

sense of ownership by everyone involved, which is why

we are known across the Highlands for the immaculate

presentation of our coaches, hotels and superb gardens.

If you haven’t been on tour with us yet or even if you

have, we would love to welcome you to Highland

on our hotels and our wide ranging tours.

No matter what you choose, I am sure you will leave us

    with many happy memories.

    Best wishes

For those who have never toured the Highlands

with us before, this is what you can expect from

    your Highland Heritage holiday.

Having selected the tour that departs from

your nearest pick-up point on the date youwish to travel, all you have to do is board the

transfer coach and sit back and enjoy the ride.

From that point onwards, we’ll take care of

    everything for you.

Every day you can look forward to a wonderful

excursion. The coach departs promptly after

for morning coffee. This is usually a place ofinterest, but may simply be a comfort break on

a longer journey – to Edinburgh, for instance.

At the lunchtime stop, the driver will tell you

about the place you’re about to visit, including

any entry costs, and at what time the coach will

leave for the afternoon sightseeing excursion.

On returning to the hotel (usually two hours

before dinner) you have plenty of time to get

ready for the evening and enjoy a leisurely bath

    and a pre-dinner drink.

Everyone gathers in the dining room just

before 7.00pm, when dinner is served. We

everyone can be in the lounge for coffee in good

time for the evening’s entertainment, which

    starts at 8.30pm.

On most tours we run a very special Highland

Day Concert which is held in either Oban or

Fort William. This gives us the opportunity to

give you the very best of rip-roaring Highland

music, piping, singing, dancing and story

telling by the widely acclaimed Skipinnish

    Broadcasting Band.

This area abounds with game, both on land and inthe rivers, lochs and seas around us. Red, roe andfallow deer are seen daily; there are otters in therivers and on the sea shore. Fish abound in the riversand lochs, particularly salmon, trout, perch and pike.

Very large trout are plentiful in Loch Awe (30 lb best!!) It is common to see hedgehog, fox, mink, stoat and weasel, and there are rabbits and hareseverywhere. At night wildcat and polecat are aboutand the gamekeepers often see pine marten in thewoods.

In the air we have representatives of almost allmigratory birds and also British based land andsea birds. With all this around there are also thegreat predators, such as golden eagles, sea eagles,

peregrine falcons, buzzards, sparrow hawks, merlin, osprey etc.

varying by location from the sea shore to themountain tops and the glens in between.

This area is a naturalists paradise and what is rareelsewhere is relatively common here. Here are a fewpictures which speak for themselves, so much betterthan mere words.

In the surrounding sea lochs and coastal areas wehave an abundance of seals, dolphins, minke whales, basking sharks, orcas and, most surprisingly, we hadan enormous sperm whale in Oban Bay in Spring2013, in front of the Alexandra Hotel!

Every evening we have an entertainer on from8.30 pm to 10.30 pm. They vary in style andcontent and cover the broad spectrum of tasteswhich typify our clientele.

Some of the lads do stand-up comedy, some singand some play music only. We have a group whodo a cabaret show and another couple who playdance music.

On most holidays there is a Highland DayConcert for everyone to enjoy.

We expect and get a lot of foot stamping from beautiful and athletic Highland dancers andof course, the great tunes of the pipes. All thisis accomplished by Skipinnish, ably led byAngus – great singers and musicians of a truly

    professional standard.

Highland Day is unique to Highland Heritageand a real treat. It is held in Oban or Fort William

Throughout your tour our team of Couriers willkeep you abreast of the history and dark deeds

of the past as you traverse the glens and lochsides. They are mines of information.

One or two very brave lads wear the kilt . . . notreally a wise thing to do if you happen to have59 ladies out for a really good time!!

On your return from the Highland Concert youwill enjoy a Highland Night candlelit dinner inthe dining room. Glengarry hats are provided foreveryone in the evening.

    Skipinnish.

     An appreciative audience.

tastes and preferences. All the Chefs sit downfor around three days to discuss our cookingmethods and exchange ideas.

The Managers also chip in here with suggestionson the service and presentation. It all adds up to

sleek, fast service and piping hot, delicious food. The menu is practically the same at each hoteland we use only traditional methods and goodBritish food sourced, as far as is practical, in thelocal area.

With everyone served at the same time, the foodis cooked to a strict timetable “just in time” andso is served as fresh as is humanly possible. Noneof this cook/chill nonsense!!

Each hotel is fully licensed and the bars are openfrom 6.00 pm to 11.30 pm. We have a very goodselection of bottled beers and also lager and beeron tap.

On the wine side, you may purchase a bottle ofwine and take it to the dining room or you can

take a glass along to ‘help the digestion’ (I’ve soheard it described). The bar is closed during mealservice.

There is a wide choice of spirits to suit all tastes.

We introduced a new bakery in the Ben DoranHotel which produces fresh bread, rolls andscones every day. We have trained our own

baker – it’s all about weight and measures andexact temperature and timing and it comes outperfectly every time.

With four large properties and around 20 acres ofland to keep, it would be fair to say that the HeadGardener has more than his fair share of work cutout for him!

There are 500 hanging baskets, and 2,000 tubs and barrels, not to mention about 5 acres of grass tocut. This means a well organised department toplant, fertilise, clean, spray and display the plantsand use the spare time to cut grass at least once aweek in summer.

Everything depends on a backup nursery at theDalmally Hotel which is the base for machines, propagation and the rearing of plants in threemassive poly tunnels which have their very ownheating, lighting and ventilation system.

In Spring, we take in and pot up about 20,000

from April until November and are displayed toadvantage all around the four hotels. The insideplants are mainly perennial and get continuoustender, loving care from both the hotel manager and

the head gardener. Everything gets well fed here!!All the windows are lined with plants in thepublic areas and conservatories. Stunning!

The garden department also looks after the ‘green’side of the business. We have a paper shredder andthe mulch produced we mix with any vegetablematter, leaves and grass that we can get our handson. It saves many big wheelie bins a week.
