BOYD GALLERYFine Australian ArtAustralia’s finest craft breweries will
converge on the tiny town of Thirlmere on August 25 for the inaugural Trainworks Winter Beer Festival – the only festival of its kind to unite the engineering and craftsmanship of mighty engines and mighty fine beer.
The craft brewing sector is the fastest growing segment of Australia’s estimated $4.9 billion packaged beer market and the Trainworks Winter Beer Festival will be a celebration of the brands and the brews that are driving demand for craft beer.
Food lovers will not be disappointed, a hearty line up of eateries offering warming winter fare have been selected to ensure the fine quality beer on offer is complemented by food of an equally high calibre.
In addition to having the best craft breweries Australia has on offer confirmed for the event, Trainworks has ensured that designated drivers and kids will also be looked after. There will be live entertainment all day and a kid’s area featuring jumping castles and other activities.
Trainworks, Australia’s newest and biggest train related attraction, was the beneficiary of a $30 million upgrade in 2011. Located in Thirlmere, a pleasant hours’ drive south of Sydney, it’s the
perfect distance for a daytrip and offers a fresh, rural setting for a major food and beer event.
Coaches to the Trainworks Winter Beer Festival will operate from The Local Taphouse Darlinghurst - ‘the best beer bar in the land’ and Campbelltown Railway Station. Funds raised by ADFAS also support scholarships for two students at the Sturt School for Wood. This year’s choice of a film classic, The Remains of the Day, the 1993 Merchant Ivory film, starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, was nominated for eight Academy Awards. Tickets are available at the Empire Cinema.
The next ADFAS illustrated lecture will be held on 22 August at The Ballroom Annesley, Westwood Drive, Bowral and is being presented by English lecturer Dr. Geri Parlby. Titled: The Emperor and the Prostitute – Justinian and Theodora, the Most Notorious Couple in the History of Byzantium and the Art they inspired, this lecture looks at the life of the pair who ruled the world’s most powerful empire during the 6th century. Together they inspired some of the most beautiful art in the Byzantine Empire, from the sublime mosaics of Ravenna and St. Catherine’s monastery to the miraculous architecture of Hagia Sophia. The Battle of the Bangers! The search for the best banger has begun! This 'region-wide' competition began at the Surveyor Inn in Berrima five years ago and is now being held in weekly heats, in six Highland's best known pubs. The final and semi-final 'bang-offs' will take place at the Inn on 30 September.
Tooheys has provided two prizes; a holiday valued at $10,000 and a runner-up prize of a Barbeque. Other prizes include Iceboxes and cases of Fourex Gold for the winner of each pub.
Ross Durney from the Surveyor Inn warns that the competition will be "anything but straight forward" because there are 13 rules which include "bangers must have a skin, no elongated rissoles", "illegal substances may not be used in bangers" and "the rules are subject to change at any time without notice".
Attend the heats or grand final event, which is part of the Tulip Time Festival. Join in the fun and vote for your favourite banger, while helping to raise much needed funds for Tulip Time's charity partner, Lifeline. $1 from every schooner sold at the final will be donated to the cause.
The Surveyor Inn in Berrima will hold its heats every Thursday from 5.30 pm. Other pubs involved are Top Pub Mittagong, Burrawang Hotel, Moss Vale Hotel, Sutton Forest Inn and Imperial Hotel Bowral.

Food & Wine Festival -15 & 16 September
One of the biggest food and wine events in NSW is on again in the Southern Highlands in September.
After the worst wet weather in 60 years forced the cancellation of the much-anticipated, inaugural Festival in March of this year, the disappointment of organisers, exhibitors, stall holders and those planning to attend resonated near and far.
For the Southern Highlands region, renowned for its award winning food and wine, restaurants, hospitality and talent, this original premier event created much excitement and a buzz throughout the Food and Wine Industry, so the timing of the rescheduling of the event was always going to be of the utmost importance – March 2013, just seemed too far away.
In light of this, major sponsor Dan Murphy’s has agreed to fast track the re-staging of the event through additional sponsorship, enabling the event to be
launched as originally planned in 2012.
Robert Kay, President of the Southern Highlands Food & Wine Association, said “This initiative of the Association is a cornerstone of our plans to increase awareness of the Southern Highlands as a producer of fine wines and artisan food as well as home to many excellent restaurants, so we are very grateful to Dan Murphy’s and the other sponsors like WIN Television, Berrima Bus Lines, Radio 2ST, Southern Highland News and Kennards for agreeing to double-up on their sponsorship.”
“The decision of sponsors to renew their support acknowledges the calibre of the event as well as the vast amount of interest generated for the March event as a showcase for the Southern Highlands Region and it’s exceptional Food and Wine Industry.’
In an exciting development, the Inland Tourism Barbecue Challenge, to be televised by the Nine and WIN Television
networks, will also be a feature of the Festival in 2012.
The two day festival will showcase the region’s exceptional food and wine as well as arts and crafts displays, retail outlets, live entertainment and plenty of activities for children.
Complimented by a delicious undercover food court and a posse of talented award winning chefs on hand to demonstrate their culinary expertise and knowledge of local produce, there will be plenty to peruse, learn, taste and savour.
Festivities will be set to the delightful Jazz croons of popular band Ella’s Holiday, live entertainment favoured by industry legend and local Geoff Harvey and most recently much loved comic Barry Humphries.
The tantalizing, multi-awarded wines of the region will be available for tastings throughout the Festival with many a case finding a spot in the car boot for savouring post festival!
Shuttle Bus services from Bowral Train Station to the Event will be operating on both days.

Berrima - a shoppers paradiseBerrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River.
The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s.
Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food.
Moss Vale, the Shire CapitalMoss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is cen-tral to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attrac-tions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an ef-fort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes.
Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Bundanoon
Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it.
Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas.
You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town.
Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Bundanoon is a delightful village set close to the Morton National Park and offers scenic walks, waterfalls and stunning views nearby. It is perhaps the prettiest of the Southern Highlands villages.
Bundanoon presents a charming scene with its avenue of English trees from the town approach to the main shopping strip.

Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands.
In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station in landscaped gardens. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian.
The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft and collectables.
The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive.
There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes.
Robbo Spuds are always on sale in season (December to April).
All this and more in a picturesque village where people are friendly, parking is easy and there is a genuine country town atmosphere.

Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality.
The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest.
The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards.
By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise.
In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products.
