Highlights from 2010-2011 Rhode Island AYP Data According to data released today, nearly twenty percent of Rhode Island schools (54 of 290 schools) failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2011. Across the state, 70 schools (approximately 24 percent) were in some level of improvement under No Child Left Behind, meaning they failed to make AYP in more than one year. Of the 54 schools not making AYP in 2011, 18 (33 percent) were elementary schools, 11 (20 percent) were middle schools, and 25 (46 percent) were high schools. Half of the schools in Providence, the state’s largest district, failed to make AYP in 2011 (see Table 1). But this was an improvement over 2010, when two thirds of the district’s schools failed to make AYP, despite an increase this year in the proficiency scores required to make AYP. 1 All but two (87 percent) of Rhode Island’s fifteen charter schools made AYP in 2011. The state as a whole saw modest gains in the percentage of schools meeting AYP for certain subgroups (see Table 2). But African American, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students saw little improvement over the past year, and are still performing well below their white and more economically advantaged peers. DESCRIPTION

Our analysis of Rhode Island's most recent school data shows that while schools made some progress in meeting their "Adequate Yearly Progress" targets, the achievement gap is still alive and well; African-American, Hispanic and disadvantaged students showed little improvement from last year.
