FROM OUR PRESIDENT MARY LOU SMITHPlant America: Today’s Youth - Tomorrow’s GardenersGreetings! I am very humbled to have been elected as the new President of the Garden Club of Ohio. When I first joined Shaker Farms Garden Club 20 years ago, I never dreamt of becoming President of Garden Club of Ohio. My journey began at the local level when I served as the Recording Secretary for Ginny Clark, who was the Cincinnati District Director at that time. That job gave me the opportunity to both learn about the inner workings of GCO and to become familiar with many of its members.

I am currently serving in my 12th year on the Board. I would like to thank the Garden Club of Ohio for presenting me with a lifetime membership to National Garden Clubs, Inc. and for the 2 dozen roses presented to me at Convention. I would also like to thank the former District Directors for presenting me with gift certificates. I have enjoyed working with these women and I am pleased many of them will be remaining on the Board. They are a group of women that share my enthusiasm for GCO and have many great ideas that can help to keep us moving forward. I would also like to send my appreciation to Deanna Stearns for the nice thank you letter, also for her many years serving GCO and congratulate her on receiving the Buckingham Award.

I am looking forward to visiting all the districts this fall with Marlene Hatton. As 1st Vice-Presi-dent, she will travel with me during the Fall District Tour. We will be promoting the Tri-Council Schools during our visits. We have so much to offer through our schools and we believe there is something for all members to learn in the field of gardening, landscape and environment.

My President’s Project is entitled, “Plant America. Today’s Youth – Tomorrow’s Gardeners”. I would like your local garden club to develop a project that would educate the youth of your community. The age group can range from kindergarten through 12th grade. You can develop many types of educational programs that can help students learn about gardening through horticulture, floriculture and respon-

sible stewardship of our natural environment. All areas of nature can be explored and enjoyed at every age. I would like each club to set a goal to complete at least one project during the next two years. You may request up to a $250 budget to help fund your pro-ject. Your club may fill out an application for the “President’s Youth Project” and send it to me by email or traditional mail. My contact information is listed in the Board Direc-tory on Page 26. The application is on the GCO website at www.gardenclubofohio.org or you can email me for a copy. I look forward to receiving your applications. I will have Pat Kuczak and Kathy Kovatch review the applications with me. I know many of you already do projects with young people. And don’t forget, your project can also be submitted for the GCO Garden Club Youth Award. If you have questions, please contact me.

Thank you so much for this opportunity and I look forward to working with all of you and helping to advance the mission of the Garden Club of Ohio.

Sincerely,

Mary Lou Smith

GCO Scholarship Fund DonationsShirley Basista, Scholarship Contributions ChairmanI have very little to report for this issue. Of the approximate 140 garden clubs in Ohio, only 55 clubs have contributed since the Annual Appeal Letter was sent in October 2018 for a total of $5,905. We have only 4 months to go before the next

letter is mailed and our goal is $15,000. We came very close to that goal last year, however I’m a bit concerned about this year as of now. I know that if all the clubs get busy and send their contribu-tions in, we will make the goal. Think positive and ACT - ASAP. We are very grateful for every dona-tion to this very worthwhile GCO Project. Please help!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW FOR THE 2020 GCO CONVENTION IN CLEVELANDBy Aggie Goss, 2020 GCO Convention Chairman

The Cleveland Convention Committee invites you to attend the 92nd Annual GCO Convention on April 15-16, 2020. Due to popular demand, the convention returns to April, the month it was traditionally held in the past. When surveyed a few years ago, members overwhelmingly voted to have a one-day convention in “non-installation years”. Cleveland is honoring that

request and will have the Awards Luncheon on Thursday, April 16th. April 15th will mainly be comprised of Board Meeting and dinner, in addition to flower show and vendor table set-up.

Garden Clubs throughout the state submit briefs describing their projects, flower shows, and community involvement to be considered for awards. At the Awards Luncheon, these clubs will be recognized for their efforts. Please plan to attend this wonderful event.

Everyone is also invited to participate in the convention flower show. The schedule follows on the next two pages. Clubs can rent 6’ x 30” sales tables for $20 each. Questions and reservations for tables can be sent to the Cleveland Co-District Directors at [email protected].

Don’t miss our 2020 GCO Convention. More information is available on the GCO website now and will be incuded in the Spring issue of Garden Greetings. Register early. “We R Cleveland” looks forward to seeing YOU!

Convention Flower Show Highlights91st Annual Garden Club of Ohio Convention‘We Need You’ - Thank you Canton District!CONVENTION COMMENTSNancy Heber, GCO Board Member and Horticulture Chairman since 1992

It’s hard to believe that it has been 27 years of going to conventions for me! Why would a person do that? First of all, it’s fun! You get to meet people from all over the state and then as the years go by, you have the opportunity to renew old friendships and acquaintances. Second, you can learn many new things from attending the workshops, programs and the flower show. Some folks go because they or their garden club have won an award or two. And that’s always special. On alternate years new GCO Officers are installed to lead our state. Each year the convention is held in a different area. This year, Canton garden club members under the leadership of Chairman Linda Law-rence did a fabulous job as hosts! Next year, 2020, the convention will be sponsored by the Cleveland District. The location is in Independence, right off I-71. Easy to get to!

As a horticulture person, I was absolutely delighted with the welcome gift of a Rex begonia (given to each full time registrant at the convention in Canton). My garden club, Serendipity, had just studied the culture and care of Rex begonias at our March meeting. Each member learned how to not “kill it”!

For those who received one at the convention, remember the following: 1) No direct sun; 2) Only water it when the top soil is dry to the touch – after letting the water run through the soil; Use only “aged” room tem-perature water. Avoid over-watering; 4) It does best in temperatures of 70-75. Sixty degrees minimum at night; 5) Only fertilize with a balanced, water soluble fertilizer during the growing season. 6) It requires high humidity (50-60%) and a porous potting mix.

Rex begonias do have a rhizome (thickened stem structure), but are not included in the rhizoma-tous group of begonias because of their more specific growing requirements (as noted above!)

Hmm… I wonder if there will be a gift plant at the next convention? Hope to see you there!

Stark County Commissioner Janet Weir Creighton was pre-sented with a citation by past GCO President Carmie DeVito

for her long-term efforts to beautify the Canton area.

By Ginny Clark, 2018 Buckingham Award Winner

This year’s Mildred Heter Buckingham Award was presented to 2017-2019 Garden Club of Ohio President, Mrs. Deanna Stearns. The “Buckingham Award” was first given in 1952 in memory of Mrs. Buckingham who served as First Vice President of Garden Club of Ohio (GCO). Since that time, the GCO Board Mem-bers vote prior to the Annual Convention for a person whom they consider to have given the most Outstanding Service to the organization.

Deanna Stearns was born and raised in the Cleveland area along with two sisters and a brother. Before retirement, she spent several decades working as an Account Executive - Vice President on large commercial insurance programs for international corporations and major hospitals includ-ing; J.M. Smucker Co., Cleveland International Airport and Cleveland Clinic. Deanna has been married to Don Stearns for 43 years and together they raised a family in the Cleveland area. After retirement, they moved to Lake Mohawk in Malvern, Ohio where she first became involved with Mohawk Trail Garden Club. Deanna has one daughter, two grandchildren and three step-grand-children. Outside of gardening and floral arranging, Deanna also enjoys reading, embroidery work, watercolor painting and interior decorating.

After serving two Presidential terms with Mohawk Trail Garden Club, Deanna served as Presi-dent of Canton Garden Club in 2000. From there she became GCO Canton District Director from 2003 through 2005 before becoming Editor of Garden Greetings from Fall 2005 to Spring 2007. Deanna continued her leadership as GCO Treasurer from 2007 to 2011, while also achieving Master Flower Show Judge status.

Among her many positions, Deanna has been involved with many GCO events and chair-posi-tions such as; the Ohio Judges’ Symposium, Chairman for the Blue Star Marker at the Veterans Clinic in Canton, Founder of the Avant-Garde Arranger’s Guild and Vice Chairman of GCO Life Member Scholarship.

Most notably, Deanna founded and focused on the FEED OHIO project during her recent GCO Presidential term to help prevent hunger within the state of Ohio. In total, the project provided over 67,000 pounds of food - which was donated to local food banks and pantries. This project corresponded with the NGC President’s theme of “Plant America”.

Recently Deanna represented GCO on a legislative bill to support the month of April becoming Ohio’s official Native Plant Month. She has noted, “This bill will increase public awareness of the im-portance of native plants and the many benefits they provide to pollinators, Ohio’s economy and the health of Ohio’s environment.” The bill has now become law – April is Ohio Native Plant Month.

We are grateful for all of Deanna’s work for the past 20 years. She has proudly represented GCO through her past accomplishments and has boldly helped shape our organization through her excellent ideas, dedication and guidance. Congratulations, Deanna!

BLUE & GOLD STAR MEMORIAL MARKERS HONOR OUR MILITARYTwo more garden clubs have dedicated Blue Star and Gold Star Markers recently with more dedications coming soon.

Blue and Gold Star Memorials Dedicated by River Road Garden Club River Road Garden Club (RRGC) held a Veteran’s Memorial Day dedication on May 25, 2019 of both a Blue Star and Gold Star Memorial at the entrance of the Civic Mall Memorial in downtown Toledo. It was a great honor to participate in this solemn occasion. These memorial installations are an amazing tribute to honor all of the Armed Forces who have defended our freedom. One week prior to the event, the beautification of the Civic Mall Memorial Gardens to honor our fallen was led by Kim Sheehan and several other RRGC members.

The moving and heartfelt ceremony featured the singing of the ‘National Anthem’ by Miss Hannah Buck, Reverend Robert Fry shared a moving religious message, the presentation of fresh floral wreaths, and the dedication was topped off with a flyover by the 180th Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard, a bagpipe rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ by Cathie Slabaugh and a 21 Gun Salute by the Lou Diamond Detachment, Marine Corp League #272.

We were honored to have GCO President Deanna Stearns, 1st Vice President Mary Lou Smith, and Jo’C Walker, Blue and Gold Star Chairman for the Northern Region join us. Club member Marjorie Fischer made arrangements with Charlie’s Dodge dealership to secure the use of a new 2020 Gladiator Rubicon Jeep for them to ride in the Memorial Day parade. A veteran drove the Toledo-made Jeep.

Nancy Cole, Club Chairman of the Project, worked with the Lucas County Commissioners, Veteran Administration, American Legion, Arts Commission and the City of Toledo for more than 2 years to make this happen. Many other members contributed to the success of the event.

RRGC Members: Susan Noss, Cornelia Wagener, Lois Ziegler, Shirley Karras, Marjorie Fischer, Toni Knecht, Sylvia Meiring, Sara Moomaw, Trisha Koelsch

Ridgewood Garden Club of Parma Celebrated Flag Day with Memorial DedicationsClub Blue Star Chairperson Toni Matlock said, “We chose Veterans Memorial Park for the memorials as it is a beautiful place that honors our veterans. The Blue Star is for those who have served and the Gold Star is for those who died while serving. We hope people never forget those who gave their life.”The Club, started in 1951, has spent the better part of the last year planning the installation of the markers, which are 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The markers were purchased by way of fundraising, plant sales and donations. Our members were happy to share this project with the community. Mayor Tim DeGeeter said the Ridgewood Garden Club of Parma works hard to beautify public green spaces in the city. “The Blue Star and Gold Star Memorial Markers are another example of Garden Club members sharing their time and talent to add a special feature to our gorgeous Veterans Memorial Park, while also paying tribute to our armed forces and fallen heroes,” DeGeeter said.

It was a sunny day and over 100 people attended. In attendance and participating were Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Parma City Officials, Blue Star Mothers & a Gold Star Mother, and GCO

members. The Invocation & Blessing was delivered by Father Joe Piskura, a Retired Vietnam Chaplain. A Gold Star Mother, Ken Volpe representing the Wounded Warrior Project, Mary Lou Smith-GCO President, Jo’C Walker-GCO Blue Star Northern Region Chairman, Mayor Tim DeGeeter, Anthony Gonzalez-US Representative and Parma City Councilman Roy Jech were speakers. Community residents and friends enjoyed the moving celebration showing our patriotic appreciation to our Veterans.

JoAnn Bartsch, Native Plant Chairman

It’s official! It took almost a year, but the work to make Ohio one of the first states to have a full month dedicated to native plants resulted in success. Governor Mike DeWine signed the bill on July 18, 2019. Now the real work begins! April 2020 will be the first official Ohio Na-tive Plant Month. As GCO Native Plant Chairman, I encourage each club to plan something to celebrate. Some sugges-tions that come to mind include: plant-ing a native tree or pollinator garden, removing invasive plants, educating our members and the public on the impor-tance of native plants in our landscapes. As with anything of importance, the key to success is planning. Let’s get started now and begin to share our ideas!

Look for more information in the next issue.

RECENT OHIO GOVERNOR’S RESIDENCE AND HERITAGE GARDEN DONATIONDeborah Wyght, Budget & Finance Chairman

Each year, GCO supports the Friends of the Ohio Governor’s Residence and Heritage Garden with a monetary donation that is used to purchase some needed item for the garden. Hope Taft, a former First Lady of Ohio and current GCO member, identifies a purchase that GCO helps facilitate. Past purchases include a replacement dogwood tree, much need-ed gardening equipment for the volunteers and large urns that are planted each year that flank the main entrance. The urns are marked with a plaque that indicates they are a gift from Garden Club of Ohio.

On this year’s wish list were new maintenance-free benches to be placed around the garden for visitors as the previous wood benches had deteriorated. Mrs. Taft suggested four black aluminum garden benches which GCO’s 2019 donation covered. Upon receipt, Mrs. Taft sent this feedback along with photos: “Thanks so much for these benches! We are getting plaques for their backs to let people know of Garden Club of Ohio’s support and generosity. Mrs. DeWine likes them so much she is thinking of buying some for their home in Cedarville. Staff loves them because they will be low maintenance instead of the high maintenance wood ones they had to deal with before!”

INTRODUCING OUR NEW GCO SUNSHINE CHAIRMAN Carol Johnson, GCO Sunshine Chairman

Hi! My name is Carol Johnson and I am delighted to serve as the new Sun-shine Chairperson on the GCO Board. As the title suggests, I hope to bring a bit of sunshine into the lives of those in need of a pick me up, or who just need to know someone cares.

Fifteen years ago while battling cancer, I fell and broke my hip. During my recovery, I received sympathy cards with just a signature, which was a nice thought, but impersonal. However, several handwritten letters still stand out to me because someone took the time to write to me personally. The impact was huge; someone really cared! This gave me the idea to make pressed flower cards and send a note to anyone who was going through an illness, an injury, or a loss.

Please let me know if a GCO member you know is in need of some sunshine. I need a name, ad-dress, and a brief explanation of what they’re going through. I do not mention specific religious figures or ideas in the notes. My contact information is in the Board Directory on Page 28.

We had a wonderful Life Member Breakfast at the GCO Convention in Canton. The Life Member Scholarship was awarded to Andrew Yates. Andrew was also awarded additional scholarships from the GCO scholarship fund. We were glad that Andrew and his parents, Ted and Sharon Yates were able to attend the breakfast.

Please consider honoring a fellow club member through the Life Membership Scholarship Program. You can recog-nize an individual for service to your club, make a memorial donation or as an individual become a life member. It is $50 to become a Life Member. The most important thing about the Life Membership Scholarship Fund is that the principal is never touched and the interest is used to provide a scholarship to a college student with studies related to gardening or environmental studies.

THE TOPIARY PARK IN COLUMBUSCarol Ann Bowling, Historical Gardens Chairman

James T. Mason originated an idea to create a garden of topiaries to recre-ate the scene in “A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grande Jatte.” Georges Seurat’s famous painting portrays Parisians enjoying a park on the Seine River. It was from the post-impressionist era around 1884.

Mason and his wife, Elaine, created living sculptures from yews on the grounds of the former School for the Deaf. He planted the evergreens and made bronze framework to support them. Elaine shaped the yews into 54

topiaries representing humans, boats, and animals. A pond represents the Seine River.

The park is 27 years old and is an outstanding tourist attraction for Columbus. It is the only known topiary garden that represents a work of art. It is included in the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Gardens.

Penny PinesMartha Shample, Outgoing Penny Pines Chairman

Penny Pines is growing all of the time. We have already had donations for 3,000 trees this year. It is wonderful! The trees are greatly needed. We have had so many disasters. Listed below are all of the clubs that have donated since my last list was in Garden Greetings. Many clubs have given more than one time.

Please support new Penny Pines Chairman Barb Okleson as you have me. Thank you for your support of the Penny Pines program.

The 2019-2020 campaign will begin July 1, 2019 and end June 30, 2020. Our hope is for our garden clubs to continue to support the mission and goals of the Nature Conservancy of Ohio. Consider a donation of any size.

Please ensure your checks are payable to Garden Club of Ohio. Checks payable to Nature Conservancy or Ohio Land Trust will be returned to you as we cannot accept those checks.

Your donation helps to protect the wetlands and preserves in Ohio. The work in these preserves include invasive species removal, sustainable forestry, habitat restoration and land protection.

Please take note that individual members can donate in their own name, family, etc. or make a memorial donation in the name of a loved one. You can also specify a certain preserve for your donation (i.e. Kitty Todd Preserve, Big Darby Headwaters, etc.)

Seeds of FriendshipMargie Williams, Outgoing Seeds of Friendship Chairman

Once again, Garden Club of Ohio Clubs have been most generous to the Seeds of Friendship Project. We were able to assemble over 500 complete sets of the eight kinds of seeds needed for the project plus numerous individual packets of seeds. There were also 127 pairs of garden gloves donated. As you know, these

seeds are taken to Rwanda by the Zoo’s gorilla experts when they go to study the mountain gorillas. They are distributed to the villagers who live near the gorillas. We also collected $2,168.40 which will be used to build a mill for the women’s use in making bread to feed the men whose jobs are to patrol the area against poachers. This worthwhile project, undertaken by the Columbus Zoo, has been in existence for 25 years, ever since the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

I have been Seeds of Friendship Chairman for over ten years and have truly appreciated the generos-ity of all who have contributed to this project. I want to thank those from The Franklin Garden Club who helped me assemble the seeds: Louse Bishop, Connie Bodiker, Carolyn Heck, Judy Isaac, Diane Sainato and Chris Bohannan. I also would like to thank Livingston Seed Company for their help in procuring the seeds.

As I retire from chairing this effort for GCO, I thank Karen Hovey of the Westerville Garden Club for taking my place. I wish her well and know Seeds will flourish under her leadership.

Thank you to the following Garden Clubs and organizations for their support in 2019:

GOOD REFERENCE GUIDES FOR GROWING AND USING HERBSHelen A. Vladic, Horticulture Book Review Chairman

“The Complete Guide to Growing Healing and Medicinal Herbs” by Wendy VincentThis is a step-by-step guide for learning about and growing healing herbs. Each herb is listed with a description of the plant, when to plant and harvest it, what part of the plant to use and what it benefits. It also explains how to grow herbs from seed, cuttings or division.

Another book on herbs is Readers’ Digest’s, “The Complete Illustrated Book of Herbs”. Over 100 herbs are listed alphabetically with their common and botanical names. It is a guide of tradi-tional knowledge, wisdom and advice. Included are sections on crafting and cooking with herbs and how to safely use them. This is a good book to have in the home.
