  • HIGHLIGHTS OF 2019

  • OUR MISSION

To nurture leadership qualities and create non-apathetic and fullycapacitate learners who are responsible and accountable to theircommunity through promoting social emotional learning, voluntarismand confidence, making them believe that they can make a difference intheir lives, as well as in their school and communities.

The School Club model has been initiated and sustained by Africa Unitein partnership with the school administration. Each School Club is led byan elected cabinet, comprised of a President and their 6 Ministers:Minister of Information and Public Relation, Minister of Finance, Ministerof Social Development, Minister of Sports, Culture and Entertainment,Minister of Health and Environment and Minister of Education.Thereafter, the cabinet is then assisted by several Parliamentarians whoalso act as deputies to the ministers and help hold the cabinet.

    MODEL OF THE AUSC

  • In 2014, in response to a noticeable lack of youth leadership andcommunity involvement, Africa Unite initiated the School Club Program(AUSC) with the slogan “My School, My Community”. As many townshipsand underprivileged communities face onslaughts of youth vandalism, gangsterism, drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS;Africa Unite then launched the School Club Program as a paradigm shift. This is a shift which is to drive change towards a safer school environmentin which learners themselves are the center of this positive change, TheSchool Club Program is designed to work in townships andunderprivileged schools to create young leaders, who think critically abouttheir environment, take pride in their schools and take responsibility intheir community development. The AUSC’s are structured to replicate thegovernment and thus prompts students to see their schools as a countrythat they must lead as their governing board.

This was a joyous celebration,as our learners had successfully crossedover the obstacle of their high schoolyears and would embark into newventures in various careers. The learnershave selected to complete their additionalstudies at the Cape Peninsula Universityof Technology, University of Cape Town, and University of Western Cape. Tocelebrate their achievements we treatedour alumni to a celebratory lunch at theV&A Waterfront.

    FIRST QUARTER AUSC ACTIVITIES

  • UNESCO MGIEP TEACHERS TRAINING IN

    INDIA

Early this year 2019, our Africa Unite School Club teachers partnered up with theUnited Nations Education, Science and Culture, Mahatma Ghandi Institute ofEducation for Peace and Sustainable Development (UNESCO MGIEP) to launch 2programmes in South African High schools in the Western Cape: DigitalIntercultural Exchange (DICE) phase III and the Global Citizenship – Libre Program.

During the workshop the teachersdiscussed global social-political issuessuch as migration, global citizenship andgender equality in relation to their owncontext. This further created anexchange between the teachersthemselves, as they were sharingexperiences from their schools andcommunities. In the universal context ofmigration, the UNESCO MGEIP sharedhow today we have around 244 millionmigrants across the globe, thus stressingthe need for social cohesion activities. The workshop equipped the teacherswith the skills to navigate the digital Chiplatform which the programs will run on,but further created a platform for otherburning issues to be addressed.

  • Due to these shocking statistics,Africa Unite initiated a series ofworkshops which revolved aroundthe subject of Gender and GenderBinaries and Gender-Based Violencethat is plaguing our communities. The workshop was led by currentUniversity of Cape Town Justice andTransformation master’s studentKate Humphrey; who’s main focus isGender and transformation. Theworkshops will be an ongoingprogram, however, so far we havecapacitated our school club youngleaders from Rosendaal High School(Delft) and Masibambane SecondarySchool (Kraaifontein). Theengagement was fruitful, and wehope to carry on such discussions asit creates a much-needed awarenesson the issue of gender-basedviolence and the intersectionality’swithin gender. These are pressingtopics which have proven to beneglected in our communities.
