Our Charity’s purpose is:
To benefit the public by promoting the positive •
teachings and values of the Christian faith, and
To bring lasting change for good in the lives of people •
through our publishing and training programmes
The aim of our Charity is to encourage people to apply
biblical principles to their everyday life and relationships.
The focus of our workOur primary objective continues to be the advancement
of the Christian faith. The strategies we use to meet this
objective include:
Our • Training Programme – offering various courses
for all academic levels from degree level to one-day
popular seminars. These include courses for ministers,
leaders and church workers, and are held at our
centre at Waverley Abbey House in Surrey as well as in
churches and venues around the UK and overseas.
Our • Publications and Resources – both dated and
undated, for all age groups. The distribution of these
publications is worldwide through a number of local
National Distributors in various countries.
Who used and benefited from our services?
Nearly one million readers around the world read •
Every Day with Jesus, our classic daily devotional
Bible-reading guide.
Many thousands of other readers used the six •
additional CWR daily Bible-reading notes.
CWR publications were distributed free into UK •
prisons and young offender establishments through
the Prison Chaplaincy Service, including over 20,000
copies of CWR’s seven dated Bible-reading notes.
We published • One Step Beyond – the autobiography
of Gram Seed, an ex-offender – 20,000 copies of
which were given away free to prisoners and young
offenders via UK prison chaplains in 2008.
Over 150 UK churches participated in CWR Bible-reading •
programmes, using Cover to Cover Complete and the
Every Day with Jesus One Year Devotional Bible.
7,800 copies of • Cover to Cover Complete were
distributed around the world during the year – taking
readers through the entire Bible in chronological
order in one year.
Regional tours to 13 venues were organised across the •
UK with CWR speakers Mick Brooks (7 Laws for Life),
Gram Seed (One Step Beyond) and Jeff Lucas (Life
Journeys) reaching a wide variety of church attendees.
Once again, we funded the publication and daily radio •
broadcasting of Every Day with Jesus in Serbia and
made editions of Every Day with Jesus in Persian
available to Persian-speaking people around the world.
We organised the translation and publication in •
Arabic of our Advent study guide Joy to the World,
distributing it in the countries of Lebanon, Iraq, Syria,
Jordan and Egypt.
CWR continued to have significant work within Nigeria, •
both in terms of publishing and training.
In Singapore, 32 students completed the second level •
of our week-long Counselling training programme and
430 delegates registered for the one-day seminar
Caring God’s Way at St Andrew’s Cathedral.
Much of the Training programme is subsidised by •
the Charity and the fees we charge do not cover the
course costs.
The • 7 Laws for Life evening seminar was held at
Waverley Abbey House at no charge to participants.
Funding was made available in 2008 to enable some •
students to attend our counselling courses during 2009.
CWR: Our Aims and Objectives
Chairman – Steve Bradley Chief Executive – Mick Brooks
A chaplain at Her Majesty’s Prison, Leyhill writes:
‘Just a word of thanks for the One Step Beyond books which
have just arrived. Believe me these will be a tremendous boost
to our ministry here.’ Another chaplain at Her Majesty’s
Young Offenders Institute in Wetherby says:
‘The copies of One Step Beyond which you sent us in March
have found a great audience in our lads. Even lads who have
never attended chapel have read it and decided to attend out of
curiosity and a hope that their lives might change.’

The principal funding source for the Charity is our
training and publishing activity as well as from voluntary
donations. 2008 was a challenging year with lower
levels of income in all areas. Expenditure was lower than
in 2007 but we continued to experience pressure on
spending during the year. As a result, at the close of the
financial year, CWR recorded a deficit of £161,659.
We have been diligent in our financial management,
conducting a budget reforecast every six months to
ensure that we are able to meet our responsibilities. The
budget for 2009 is expected to result in a small surplus.
Total income for the year amounted to £3,323,582 •

Training Programmes
Training income for 2008 did not increase (£609,653
compared to £610,918 in 2007), and training costs,
including allocated support costs, rose by 1.4% to
£1,106,133 (£1,090,297 in 2007).
CWR trained counsellors are found in many countries of
the world, providing a significant benefit and skill to many
and varied communities. Our courses are in great demand
as students identify with the unique CWR Model of Human
Functioning as it helps them to provide support to a large
number of people in need of such input.
UKThe level of positive feedback regarding our Training
courses during the past year has been particularly
pleasing. The main Introduction to Biblical Counselling
(IBC) course was either full or almost full on each of the
four occasions it ran. Student feedback was excellent
in terms of the quality and life-transforming effect this
course had upon those who attended. Despite a dip in the
numbers in Modular Diploma registrations for 2009 due
to the present difficult financial times, enrolments for the
Modular Certificate are very high.
At the end of October, CWR and London School of
Theology (LST) signed a joint venture agreement
formally committing to further collaboration in
developing and delivering the Theology and Counselling
course at LST. CWR’s partnership with LST in this unique
programme began in 1998, making 2008 our tenth
year of offering this highly effective blend of Scripture,
theology and counselling – the UK’s only university-
validated theology and counselling degree. Student
numbers continued to be buoyant with 90+ completing
and graduating at LST and CWR. The joint course is
soon expected to receive recognition from the British
Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
Our first MA from the University of Wales, Bangor, was
awarded to Robert Thursfield, a minister of 30 years’
standing, after completing the Postgraduate Programme
in Pastoral Leadership course. Pastoral Care training was
further consolidated, with significantly increased numbers
for the autumn day-release course. Our first podcast by
CWR tutors, 21st-century Discipleship, delves into the
nature of biblical discipleship and discusses how we ‘do
discipleship’ effectively in the twenty-first century.
‘ CWR’s counselling training has been excellent, giving me clear and stimulating teaching. It is thoroughly professional, academically challenging, Christ-centred and sensitive to participants’ life journeys while they are on the course. Support and encouragement were always available to promote understanding, success and growth.’
(P. Scott, UK)

SingaporeCWR’s commitment to serve the Church in Singapore
continued with further ministry visits taking place in
recent months.
We have undertaken a full review of the counsellor
training that is presented internationally and have now
developed a course with three one-week modules, the
first of which was presented in Singapore in March 2009.
The next major step is to establish a legal entity in
Singapore, which will enable us to function more
effectively in the wider region of South-East Asia.
‘Waverley attracted us because of the beautiful surroundings … they create an ideal atmosphere for a refreshing and inspiring time away as a team. The conference room we use is spacious and the views are breathtaking.’(A. McCracken, Tearfund)
Waverley Abbey House continues to be used pre-
dominantly as the base for the Training programme in the
UK. 2008 marked the 21st anniversary of the opening
of the refurbished Waverley Abbey House and, prior to
a special celebration event in September, a two-year
renovation and redecoration programme of the external
South and East elevations of the building was completed.

AustraliaA ministry team visited Australia and New Zealand in
September. Mick and Lynette Brooks travelled ‘Down
Under’ to visit National Distributor CMC Australasia,
and present two of CWR’s core seminars in a number of
cities in Australia and New Zealand. The tour included
Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland, where Christ
Empowered Living was presented. Additionally, in Sydney
and Auckland, 7 Laws for Life – Foundations for Living,
was presented. This is a one-day seminar based on
teaching which Founder, Selwyn Hughes, considered to
be his legacy to the next generation.

Publishing ministry
CWR publications are valued across the world for their
practical guidance and down-to-earth teaching. Every Day
with Jesus is the classic daily devotional loved and used
by hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
We continue to receive testimonies of how these materials
have benefited people in many different situations.
Difficult market conditions continued throughout
2008 in the international book trade, including major
bankruptcies and closures; this saw our publishing income
drop by 3.4% to £1,816,264 (2007: £1,880,614). However,
publishing costs, including allocated support costs, were
reduced by 2.7% to £1,924,082 (2007: £1,977,286).
UKWe have been updating and re-issuing previously
published material in our flagship devotional, Every Day
with Jesus, for the last two and a half years, following
the death of its author, Selwyn Hughes. Consideration is
being given to the long-term development and delivery of
all our dated resources. One new initiative is the addition
of an Every Day with Jesus online resource for group and
individual study materials.
In 2008, the industry body, the Christian Booksellers
Convention, nominated CWR for shortlist inclusion
as Christian Publisher of the Year and also named
CWR’s Cover to Cover Complete as Reference Book of
the Year. Additionally, in May, the UK Christian Book
Awards nominated our publications in all three of their
competition’s categories, and the public voted Jonathan
Brant’s YP’s Guide to Knowing God Favourite Children’s
Book for 0- to 15-year-olds.
Other highlights include;
32,000 • Cover to Cover Complete now in print.
18,000 • Every Day with Jesus Bibles in print
(outside of the USA).
100 UK bookshops signed up to the • CWR Premium
Stockist scheme.
Singapore Singapore will continue to be a key focus of our
international efforts in both our training and publications
ministries. A locally-printed South-East Asian edition of
Every Day with Jesus will commence from March/April
2009 with an initial print run of 8,000 copies.
MalaysiaWe no longer have exclusive distribution arrangements
in Malaysia and are now selling direct from the UK. The
possibility of holding training seminars in 2009/10 is
being discussed with the larger book chains.
NigeriaWe continue to publish and distribute many thousands of
copies of Bible-reading notes throughout Nigeria.
Sri Lanka - Rev Deva da Silva recently visited Waverley.
He is a member of the committee responsible for overseeing the
only simultaneous translation of Every Day with Jesus - from
English into Sinhala. Along with the other editors, he prayerfully
considers every page and discusses the best words to convey the
truest meaning to their Sinhalese readers. It was inspiring to
hear about their dedication and the impact of the publication
in a country struggling with many problems – ethnic, social and
religious – and ravaged by conflict which has continued on and
off for many decades.

Plans for Future Periods
Structure, Governance and Management
Staff
The Charity plans to continue with the activities as
outlined above, subject to satisfactory funding.
Plans are being developed to work on a number of
key development areas including:
Establishing a relationship with a key university •
in the UK
Setting up an International Charity Organisation (ICO) •
in Singapore
Progressing the development of the current •
Waverley site
Reinventing our Partnership programme, •
for both individuals and churches
Recruiting a successor / replacement for the •
Director of Training
Moving to the next stage in the reinvention of •
daily Bible reading
CWR continues in discussion with Waverley Borough
Council and English Heritage in relation to planning
consents that will be necessary to secure the basis for the
expansion of the Waverley Abbey Campus so we can fulfil
the long-term development of our training programme.
We will continue to develop new media resources in the
form of DVD, webcasts, distance learning and audio
programming.
The ministry of CWR was founded by the late Rev Dr
Selwyn Hughes in 1965. The organisation is incorporated
as a charitable company, limited by guarantee and
governed by its Memorandum & Articles of Association.
The members of the Board of Directors, who are
the charitable Trustees of CWR, have the ultimate
responsibility for directing the affairs of the Charity,
ensuring that it is solvent, well-run and delivering the
charitable outcomes for which it was established.
Four new Trustees were appointed during the year as the
Board continues to be refreshed following the retirement
of Trustees with twelve or more years’ service. Following
a request from a Trustee, the frequency of Board
meetings was reviewed and formal Board meetings were
reduced to three (with one Board Development day each
year) to be held in April (plus AGM), July and December.
The Board is assisted in its work by five Advisory
Groups that cover the key areas of Governance, Finance,
Publishing, Training & Events and Resources. A sixth
advisory group – covering our International activity – was
set up in late 2008. Each Advisory Group meets at least
three times a year, before each formal Board meeting.
The Ministry Strategy Team, made up of the Chairman
of the Board, the Chief Executive and three senior
managers meets three or four times a year. Their brief
is to assess the progress of the ten-year plan in each of
CWR’s six ministry areas and to set the strategy in order
to achieve the objectives as directed by the Board.
In early 2008 we introduced a new staff communication
meeting. This meeting takes place on a monthly basis,
during which the Chief Executive shares various news
and vision updates with the staff.
The staff numbers, excluding Directors, totalled 54 FTEs
(full-time equivalents) – down from 58 FTE in 2007.
The turnover of permanent staff has again been low,
increasing just slightly from 12% in 2007 to 13.6% in 2008.

Applying God’s Word to everyday life and relationships
The CWR foundation‘There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another – showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.’
