Fifth Graders Experience Annual Trip

to Camp McDowell

Creepy crawlies, canoes, night hikes, and conserving re-sources. Highlands School 5th

graders experienced all these and more at the Camp McDowell Environ-mental Center September 17-19. Students left campus early Wednesday morning to head to Nauvoo and Camp McDowell where they slept for 2 nights and kept busy learning for 3 days.

Students participated in classes on natural resources, mining, and recla-mation, searched both pond and stream for critters that they then identi-fied, made rope, butter and candles like pioneers, wrote about their ex-periences, went canoeing, participated in team building activities, took a night hike, and learned about ways to reduce food waste.

This interactive environmental experience is a tradition for all our 5th grad-ers, and our students once again made us proud by being excellent repre-sentatives of Highlands School. They even were honored as ―Food Waste Warriors‖ and made the Food Waste Hall of Fame for having so little food waste during their 3 day stay! Attention Kindergarten Parents:

The kindergarten classes will go to the McWane Science Center on October 2, 2008. We will visit the Just My Size area, and participate in a demonstra-tion on solids, liquids and gases. We will leave the school around 8:30 and be at the McWane Center by 9:00. We will leave around 11:30 and be back at school by 12:00. We will eat lunch in our classrooms that day. This includes the hot lunch students.

Preschool and Middle School Students Celebrate Teddy Bear Day

Teddy Bear Day in preschool is a day when students get to bring a teddy bear to school. The teddy bears get to be measured with cube blocks and have stories read to them.

Preschool students also have the opportunity to meet with the Middle School students on the Quad to share a snack and talk about their teddy bears.
