June 2014 HIGHWOOD BOCCE CLUB Members, Summer is finally here and we are really excited by 2014 - both reflecting back and looking forward. First, we want to welcome our new members of the Administration. Lenny Innocenzi is our new President, moving over from his Trustee and Chairman role. Jack Grandi has rejoined the Administration, this time as Vice President and Franco Aloisio is our new Treasurer. Additionally, the Administration appointed Susan Hauer to fill the Trustee position vacated by Lenny. We now have a full Administration with a deep and diverse set of experience and most importantly a strong desire to serve the Club. 2014 has been a busy year so far. Since our last newsletter in March we have had 3 tournaments, the annual Easter Coccetto, St. Patrick’s Day Party, a Friday Fish Fry, as well as a Member Dinner Dance. Importantly, we also have a record number of new members and are having one of the strongest financial years in the Club’s history. Looking ahead to the rest of the year, we have much planned. The World Cup has started and we encourage you to enjoy the games with your fellow members at the Club – Go Italia! We also wish our men success later this month in the National Tournament in St. Louis and later in September are thrilled to be hosting the Women’s Midwest Tournament…and hope for a home-team victory! With additional tournaments including a Club Championship planned, there will be no shortage of bocce at the HBC. There are also many new and traditional member events planned for the remainder of the year - check the calendar for the full schedule. Of course, all of these activities would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteer hours from our membership. THANK YOU to all that have given even 1 hour to setup, staff or clean up from an event. Or helped to organize one of our many tournaments. Or helped shovel snow or maintain our facility in any way. Or any other of the countless ways individuals give and contribute to the health and success of the Club. Your time and effort are greatly needed and extremely appreciated. Members,

Summer is finally here and we are really excited by 2014 - both reflecting back and looking forward. First, we want to welcome our new members of the Administration. Lenny Innocenzi is our new President, moving over from his Trustee and Chairman role. Jack Grandi has rejoined the Administration, this time as Vice President and Franco Aloisio is our new Treasurer. TBA - Club Championship Tournament Who do you think the best bocce player is at the Club? It’s time to find out at our first Club Championship Tournament – dates to be announced.

An important part of the mission of the HBC is to preserve the Italian heritage and culture through promotion of the game of bocce. And hosting and participating in tournaments are a primary way we accomplish that. See below for a summary of the tournaments both completed and upcoming.

Easter Coccetto

The annual Easter Coccetto is one of our favorite events. It’s wonderful to see our members and guests enjoying the Club with their families. Here are some pictures from this year.

HBC Announcements

Facility Improvements: The Administration and volunteers have been hard at work making improvements to the Club. Some aren’t as obvious as others, but here’s a list of some things done recently. • All light bulbs were replaced at the

expense of ComEd. We have seen our utility costs decrease by over $1,000 as a result already this year.

• Basement and utility closet cleaned and re-organized

• New cappuccino machine

Some planned upcoming improvements include: • New door at entrance to the bar • New chairs by the courts • Curtains in the banquet room • Repair of the outdoor bocce courts –

should be playable by end of July

Summer Schedule Through Labor Day weekend the Club has moved to its summer schedule and is now closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Private Parties With our expanded banquet room, authentic Italian cooking, world-class bocce courts, and extremely reasonable rates the HBC is a great place to host your own party – large or small. If you are interested in holding an event at the Club, simply send an email to [email protected].

Member Reminders

• For liability reasons, alcohol cannot be brought in from outside the Club. This applies to both members and non-members.

• As approved at the April general member meeting, the Club may be closed for large private parties on Saturdays that use the courts, bar, and banquet room areas. Advance notice will always be posted.
