HILLARYS PRIMARY SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER

Week 6 - TUESDAY, 2nd June 2020

Principal’s Pen I hope you were all able to enjoy some well-deserved family and leisure time over the

extra-long weekend.

It’s wonderful to see and feel a level or normality coming back to school, work, leisure and home.

Schooling is once again returning to normal and our students are engaging in the regular

curriculum, in their usual classroom environment. Those approved to learn from home are also

being supported.

I am pleased that together, we have been able to make the best of this situation and ensure your child’s safety and continuity of learning.

Student Independence Teachers and support staff recently shared how much student independence and student responsibility has grown over the past months. Our students have thrived with the extra responsibility of walking to class, unpacking their school bag and preparing for the day. Staff would like to see the continuation of the uninterrupted quality time with their students in the morning this has provided teachers and students with the time to connect, be organised, become mindful and be truly prepared for the lessons at 8:45am. Enhanced student independence has also seen a reduction in separation ‘bumps’ at the start of the day; allowing parents and carers to smoothly transition to work or home commitments.

Reporting

With the regular attendance of many students being lower over this time, the breadth and depth of the curriculum covered throughout Semester 1 may have been reduced. For this reason, schools are not required to include A to E grades on this year’s Semester 1 student reports. It also means that your child’s attendance may not be reported, and any written comments may provide less information on their progress than usual. We have extended our reporting timeline at a school level to assist students and teachers as much as we can with curriculum coverage and assessments for reporting purposes. Student reports will be available from Wednesday July 1, 2020. All going well, Semester 2 reports will provide the usual, more detailed information on your child’s progress and achievement. Thank you for your anticipated understanding.

Parental Access to the School – Phase 3 COVID-19 Restrictions

Parents/guardians will be able to enter school grounds to drop off or pick up their children commencing Monday June 8. A further COVID-19 Update will be provided during the week once instructions are received from the Department of Education. This update will clarify what the COVID-19 Phase 3 Re-strictions will look like at Hillarys PS next week.

School Development Day Summary

On our School Development Day, staff affirmed their commitment to school collaborative

norms and engaged in a performance development and management reflection task.

We also reflected on and participated in sessions about sustainability, the zones of regulation,

writing moderation, workplace culture and leadership.

Duty Vests Making a Statement

Some of our staff members have set a challenge to colleagues to personalise their duty vests

by adding some sparkle and colour. We hope this trend catches on and I look forward to see-

ing how creative we can all be.

Duty vests are an important part of our school culture and risk management procedures, help-

ing students to easily identify a staff member if they need assistance or support in the play-

ground.

Staff Toilet Block

I sincerely thank the Department of Education for funding the installation of a new staff toilet block. The current staff toilets facilities were insufficient - catering for over seventy staff. There will be some interruptions to parking arrangement this week.

Gratitude

Gratitude is a quality of being thankful and appreciative; a response to something received, tangible or intangible. Positive psychology research has shown that gratitude has significant positive effects on the brain and body, and helps people feel more positive emotions. Teaching children and young people how to express gratitude can help them to identify the important things in life they are grateful for, both big and small. Click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dBk-3SmoJ0 to view a videoclip, How to Talk with Kids about Gratitude by Greater Good Science Center, which demonstrates how to help chil-dren experience all facets of feeling grateful.

Building on Strength in Uncertain Times: In this together

Click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLw0hGntWmk&feature=youtu.be to view a video narrated by the Department’s Elders in Residence and senior Aboriginal staff.

These messages are relevant to all school communities and highlight the 2020 National Rec-onciliation Week theme In This Together which resonates at this time, as it reminds us wheth-er in a crisis or in reconciliation, we are all “in this together”.

Well done and thank you for your continued support throughout this term.

Yours truly

Term2, Week 5

With Winter upon us….

At Camp Australia, we’re experts at having fun, regardless of what’s happening with the weather. Rain, hail or shine we always have fun, with engaging and enriching activities on offer for all ages of children to participate in! If there is a loved activity that we have missed for some reason, please let us know.

Still in these difficult times…

Our OSHC service is open and operating for those that need our care. For families who require care, childcare will

be provided free of charge until 30th June as per the Federal Government's announcement on the 2nd April.

Whilst care is free, we still need to know if you are coming. We ask that you get your bookings in as soon as you

can. It’s first in, first served!

Outdoor Play:

Even though the season is turning, we are still requesting from parents and encouraging the children to wear a

wide brim hat while playing outside.

Reconciliation Week:

During this week, we will be continuing to focus on Reconciliation Week. We have created a very interesting and

engaging program. We will be looking in depth into the culture of our Native Australians and will cover activities

such as music, food, outdoor games and arts.

Drop Off / Pick Up:

We are still in the process in keeping parents/carers out of our front licensed space. For some it is an easy transi-

tion. For those not so easy, we understand and are there to provide extra support.

If you as parent have any input that you would like to share with us, please contact us at the service.

We look forward to seeing you and your family soon,  From the Team at Camp Australia  Anna, Cameron and Jessica
