THE Durban Flying Squad confiscatedhydroponic marijuana (dagga) to thestreet value of more than R1.2 million

fromahouse onCliffdaleRoad thismonth, butthe case against the suspected dealer hashad to be temporarily withdrawn.

According to provincial police spokesper-son captain Thulani Zwane, Flying Squadmembers were patrolling the area when theyreceived information about drugs on thepremises. “The squad raided the house andarrested a 24-year-old man.”

Zwane said it is alleged that the manmanufactured the drug on the premises andthen sold it.

Hillcrest police spokesperson lieutenantFrance Mkhize said the case had been tempo-rarily withdrawn, after the accused claimedthat the evidence had been tampered with.

“The man pleaded not guilty and told themagistrate that he did not have any drugs andthat the evidence was fabricated,” said Mkh-ize. The drugs have subsequently been sentto a forensics lab for analysis. If the results

confirm that the evidence collected was in-deed marijuana, the case will continue.

MEC for Transport, Community Safety andLiaison, Willies Mchunu, has praised mem-bers of the Flying Squad for the recovery.

“This...will certainly go down as a majorstride inour waragainst drugs and other ille-gal substances. We say congratulations to thepolice who executed this recovery for workwell done.

“The government has identified drugs asone of the key drivers of crime and criminali-ty. We therefore urge communities to partnerwith the police to ensure that those pushingand dealing in drugs are removed from ourcommunities,” said MEC Mchunu.

THEspleen is a large, fleshy redorganin the left side of the abdomen, lyingagainstthestomach.Incats, thespleenis rarely affected by disease but in thedog, it is a commonsite for cancer – ei-ther arising from the spleen (usually a“haemangiosarcoma”or“bloodvesseltumour”) or having spread there fromother sites.

The spleen has several functions, but the main ones are removal of old

red blood cells from circulation; as anorgan storing blood ready for releaseinneed (exercise, shock);andasanor-ganof theimmunesystem.Inthelattercase, the spleen is particularly impor-tant in the fight against “protozoan”organisms –malaria in people, biliaryin dogs. This is why splenectomiseddogs (those whose spleens have beenremovedsurgically)musthavetip-top,year-round tick control. A splenect-

omised dog infected with biliary candevelopmassiveparasitaemiaanddiewithin 10 days.

Thespleencanalsotwist–althoughthis is rare, and usually associatedwith a twisted stomach (gastric dila-tion-volvulus) and can undergostrokes or “infarcts” – the latter arerarely of any clinical importance. Wecan evaluate the spleen by palpation,onX-ray, or,most commonly, byultra-

sound. Ultrasound-guided or surgicalbiopsies of the spleen can be very en-lightening in understanding the bestcourse of action. For example, dogswith lymphoma cancer (aka lympho-sarcoma) do WORSE when splenect-omised, than when simply givenchemo – so it’s important to know thenature of the beast! The spleen is notan essential organ, and can be re-moved without any effect on lifespan.

BEING a writer isn’t easy. At least that's what I’veread. But some say it comes naturally and theycannot believe they get paid to do something theylove so much. But they take the money anyway. I’ll letyou know my own thoughts when I become a fullyfledged writer.

One thing I do know, however, is that any goodwriter has to be a bibliophile.

That’s just a fancy (and politically correct) termfor a bookworm. I am it, so I can safely say I’m well onmy way to being the guy who sits on his veranda sip-ping cold coffee, in my multi-coloured gown, flip-flops,messy hair (my locks are nearing that) and jotting onmy tablet (21st-century stuff) how people’s lives areplaying out as I watch them pass by, reciting punch-lines to myself for my next best-seller.

For now, however, I have to deal with a matterthat affects me almost every day. As a tutor, I com-mute quite a lot between eSikhawini Richards Bayand Empangeni.

My expert familiarity with the rolling landscapehas eliminated the need to look out the window. Likeany self-respecting bibliophile I bring a book along andhope to cover a chapter or two of Walter Isaacson’sEinstein: His Life and Universe.

Alas, my fellow commuters do not share my pas-sion for a good biography and this is evident in thewary stares I sometimes get (in this day and age nogal).

Just the other day I was travelling to tutor a stu-dent in Empangeni in the late afternoon. So I found analmost empty Quantum (a great coincidence if youhappen to be reading Einstein) and took a seat ascloseaspossibletotheleft-handsideofthetaxi, havingcalculated that the sun would be on the other side ofthe vehicle for most of the trip.

As I was discovering Einstein’s extramarital rela-tions with his cousin, the full taxi was finally Empan-geni bound.

As we sped down the picturesque N2 the hydro-gen bomb that is our sun shed some of its rays throughthe sunroof (I only noticed its existence then). Need-less to say, the brightness of my book compelled meto read it at an awkward angle.

At last I succeeded in placing the page in theshadow of the book, alas, the page itself was thenout of view.

Still blinded by the book, and with a curious bluehue in my vision, I reluctantly returned my book tomy backpack and looked up at the sunroof loomingover our heads. And I asked myself the very construc-tive question: “Who the f*** puts a sunroof on abloody taxi?” My question fell unanswered by a longtrainofponderingandwasputontheshelfofcoldcasessuch as why seatbelts are locked away in taxis andwhy foreign owned shops are looted.

On the very same day as I entered the taxi thatwould take me home, I received some weird stareswhen I scanned the taxi's roof before asking: “J1?”

Again I sat in a carefully chosen seat but this wouldnot be my day as the delinquent who chose to sit nextto me had the whiff of a small brewery, and thepeople in the seat behind me didn’t hesitate to ask meto keep changing the air conditioning from the win-dow (we call it i-weather in loxion slang).

It is clear to me now that my bibliophiliac tenden-cies will forever be under house arrest which is prob-lematic in this day and age of mobility and conve-nience. You can’t even read in the library these days, they play East Coast Radio in Richards Bay.

A taxi is no placefor a bibliophile TWENTY years ago, on 27

April, many South Africansstood for long hours in queueswaiting in anticipation to casttheir vote - for the first time.

Many still recall the joy theyfeltwhen theymade theirmarkon South African history.

In another 20 years timemany won’t remember thatfeeling of victory when SouthAfrica became a democracy.

Freedom Day will be anoth-er public holiday on the calen-dar.

There are some who believethat 2014, just like 1994, willbring about some majorchanges that may be regardedas historic.

The good news is thereseems to be excitement in theair as the 2014 elections drawscloser. The Fever is proud tohave interviewed a number ofyoungsters who are lookingforward to making their mark

this year. It is clear that youngpeople are aware of the powerof their vote and now they areencouraging their peers to“vote and not complain”.

“It doesn’t matter who youvote for, as long as you vote,”wrote one of our young read-ers.

Looking at all the publichol-idays in the South African cal-endar, the one we should cele-brate united as a nation, isFreedom Day.

This may sound like a bro-kenrecord,but freedomdidnotcome easily, there was a heftyprice to pay, so South Africanscan stand united and partici-pate in choosing their leaders.

Hopefully this will not be anopportunity wasted. Listen toyour family and friends whoare encouraging you to makeyour mark. They know whatthey are talking about. HappyFreedom Day!

Let’s celebrateour freedomand vote

Lady May is Glenelly’s glagship es-tate wine. Elegant and complex, thewine develops flavours of cassis, blackcurrant, dark cherry, touch ofgraphite and delicate spicy plum.

Fresh and vibrant, the evolutionof the wine introduces flavoursspecific to Glenelly’s terroir. Deep-ly coloured and perfectly bal-anced, the wine displays an ex-quisite structure with velvety tan-nins and a very good agingcapability.

Grand Vin de Glenelly is the signa-ture red blend of the estate. Thewine has a deep, dark and richcolour.

The wine offers an elegant com-plex bouquet developing aromasof cassis and spicy plums withnotes of toast in the background. The palate has a great intensi-

Crime scene savvy>> Ballistics expert talks to the Fever about the Oscar Pistorius trial

SHANNON HOPKINS

BALLISTIC expert CobusSteyl has been a busyman as he is part of the

panel of experts in their fieldscommenting for Carte Blanche –and other platforms like Radio702 and East Coast Radio - on thehigh-profile Oscar Pistorius mur-der trial.

The Salt Rock resident has beenintheindustryfor28yearsand

thistrialisoneofhisbiggestroles.

Pistorius is on trialfor killing hismodelgirlfriend ReevaSteenkamp on

Valentine’sDay2013. Steyl, howev-er, is not formally working on thecase, his colleague Wollie Wolma-rans has taken it on.

Steyl says he has participated in12 or 13 live shows for channel 199on the trial over the past eight or soweeks.

“I help provide insight and opin-ion for the showonanyballistic andforensic evidence that has come upduringthebroadcastingofthetrial.”

Steyl, whohas lived on theNorthCoast for about 16 years, started onhis career path in 1984 when hejoined the South African PoliceForce (SAPS) in Pretoria.

He originally studied land sur-veying,buthitaroadblockwhenthestate did not allow him to do his in-ternship, but required him to go tothe army for two years.

Whenhefinishedhisstint, thein-dustry had moved on from manualto digital techniques, and as his ar-my training helped to qualify him tojoin the police, he decided to takethis path instead.

AfterjoiningtheSAPS,heworkedin the fingerprints department forsix months and in 1985 became amember of the ballistic section ofthe forensic science laboratory. After three-years of training, hequalified as a forensic special-ist in 1989.

He left the SAPS in 1993to become a private ballis-ticspecialist,whichhehasdone full-time ever since.

Steyl works around the country, saying it isnotunusual tobe in threeprovinces in one week.

“I lovewhatIdo—it issointerest-ingandeachdayisdifferent. It isalsoreally rewarding to be instrumentalin catching criminals,” said Steyl.

Beingoneoftwospecialists,Steylsaid he works on some of the mostprominent cases in the country.

He is currently working on theMarikana mine shooting incidentand has previously assisted in anumber of other high profile cases.

Steyl is able to offer additionalanalysisbeyondwhatthepolice lab-oratoriesarecapableof,asoftenpo-licereportsmaybelacking informa-tion leaving large grey areas openfor interpretation by the court.

Typesof blood spatters, firearmsand how they were fired or used, bullet marks on vehicles and sur-rounds, tyre tracksandfootprintsatcrime scenes and post mortems allcan be used as evidence in court.

When asked if doing post mor-tems is not disturbing, Steyl said hejust keeps his mind on the job.

“Abodyisasilentwitnessofwhathappened. I don’t really get upset asI focus on the evidence given as Iwanttoprovidethebestinformationpossible,” said Steyl.

Hesaidhis jobasaspecialist isallabout ‘thinking out of the box’. Hehas developed his own ways ofanalysingscenes,forinstanceheus-esadental stone,Orallab75, to takeimprints of footprints and such.

Speaking to Fever on the Pistori-us trial, Steyl said a culpable homi-cide finding is a given, however atthisstage itappears that intention islikely tobeprovenby theStatepros-ecutor. He added that he knowschief prosecutor Gerrie Nel sayinghe excellent during cross examina-tion.

“He is drilling Oscar as he wantsto reveal in court that he has a tem-per. When not travelling the coun-try, Steyl enjoys being ‘incognito’athome. He and his wife Kelley, whoalso helps write his reports, havefourchildren-oneatuniversity, twoat Umhlali Preparatory and one atAshton College.
