Hollyfest scholarship auction a successWe had over 200 people at-

tend the 28th Annual HollyfestScholarship Auction, whichraised money to fund scholar-ships for the Hilliard studentsgoing on to further their educa-tion.

The highlights included thestudents who have received thescholarships talking about theimpact it has made, the atten-dees taking home a souvenir with their pictures from the photo booth, active bidding onsilent and live auction items and the reverse raffle prize of$1,000.

We also had some outstand-ing pieces of artwork donatedby school students and commu-nity artists.

As 2010 wraps up, this is a great time to reflecton how your year went – both personally and pro-fessionally. Did you stick with your New Year’sresolutions? If not, why? In reviewing our Chamber Mission and goals,we certainly made some great strides toward meet-ing or exceeding most of our objectives. We hadtwo board retreats this year. We were able to cometo a good consensus on what is most important forour Chamber to be a relevant and positive organi-zation for our members. We added a new (and fan-tastic!) event – Taste of Hilliard & Business Expo.And we were able to continue to grow our impor-tant fundraiser – The Hollyfest Scholarship Foun-dation – thanks to your donations and your help.We, as a Chamber, had a positive year in mem-bership, activities, and programs. We hope youwere able to join us at man y events. If not, add anew resolution for 2011 to make it out more often.

Success calls for two kinds of passion

Over the years, as I have talkedwith budding entrepreneurs, itcontinues to amaze me ho wmany have not conducted any-thing close to a prudent amountof research as they start theirbusinesses. Indeed, they oftenact as if they must get their busi-ness going right now or they willjust pop.

This kind of impatience is dan-gerous.

Doing my best to talk themdown off the ledge, I walk thefine line between slowing themdown a little and dousing the fireof their entrepreneurial passionwith my tough love.

Yes, passion is important. Andwhen would-be small businessowners get that far away look intheir eyes at this impetuous stageof a start-up, they have plentyof passion for what the businessdoes. They can’t wait to sell suits,manufacture plastic parts, bakebagels or (your dream here). Butwhile their passion for what theywant to do will come in handy,

without a healthy attraction forbusiness fundamentals, passionhas only slightly more value thana dream. As the Texans say, it’sall hat and no cattle.

This will be on the test: Suc-cess as a small business ownerrequires two kinds of passion:The first is the love of what youwant to do, as described above.This is like the way a motherloves her newborn baby, and it’sthe easy kind. In fact, it’s tooeasy.

The object of the second kindof small business passion is lessadorable but not less important.This is passion for a professionthat requires dedication to learnand practice management fun-damentals and acceptance of areturn-on-investment timelinethat pushes the deferred gratifi-cation envelope. See, I told youit was less adorable. The clos-est kin to this kind of passionwould be that which is requiredfor parents to love their teenagersanyway, during those moments

when they don’t like them verymuch.

It’s critical for a starry-eyedstart-up to make the distinctionbetween these two types of pas-sion. Passion for what you sellwon’t be enough when payablesexceed receivables, making pay-roll (“Is it Friday again? Al-ready?!”), when customers arethe most difficult, when an em-ployee becomes part of the prob-lem, etc.

These and a long list of otherabiding small business challengeswill require you to deliver on themanagement fundamentals youbecame good at because you hadthat other kind of passion - thekind that made you become ahigh-performing, professionalbusiness owner, not just some-one who dreamed of being one.

Write this on a rock ... Smallbusiness success requires bothkinds of passion.
