Considerations

Materials Design

Solid Laminate

Solid laminate is a 13mm compressed material with two decorative faces and a black core providing exceptional resistance to moisture and impact.

The decorative faces comprise paper impregnated with melamine resin.

The black core comprises layers of phenolic resin impregnated Kraft paper.

Ideal for use in damp environments or where intensive cleaning is required.

The material is not affected by moisture nor is it susceptible to weathering, mould or rot.

Surfaces are non-porous, so dirt cannot cling to them, and they are easy to clean and disinfect.

X-rays can penetrate the materials, therefore solid laminate is often used in the medical sector.

According to DIN 51953 the materials are classed as anti-static, which indicates suitability for clean rooms and computer furniture.

The material is highly resistant to burning cigarettes, which do not damage the surface and leave no permanent marks.

According to tests at several European test institutes, the material offers one of the best fire resistance performances for panel products.

Laminate Faced Chipboard

Laminate is 0.8mm thick, comprising of:

- Surface layer impregnated with melamine resin for decorative paper protection.

- Decorative paper which is impregnated with melamine resin.

- Core comprising papers impregnated with phenolic resin.

Door and partition core is comprised of 18mm V313 (moisture resistant) chipboard.

Postformed fascia core is comprised of 28mm chipboard.

V313 (moisture resistant) Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC)

MFC constitutes a chipboard core faced both sides with melamine resin impregnated decorative paper.

The core material is designed to withstand moisture penetration (to specification EN317). However, for damp environments solid laminate materials should be used.

Produced from high density standard board within +/-0.3mm thickness tolerance.

Manufactured in accordance with ISO 9002.

Consistent environmental quality in line with ISO 14001.

We recommend the following factors are considered when designing washroom locations:

What is the anticipated volume usage for the washroom, ie. how many urinals/cubicles/sinks/ changing units/lockers are required? This will help establish a layout for the room.

What is the environment of the washroom, ie. will the usage be light/medium/severe, and is the atmosphere dry/moist/wet? This will assist specification of a suitable cubicle system.

When designing the detail layout of the washroom, ensure that the following are clarified:

Are vanitory units, lockers, ducting or panels required? If so, ensure that these details are indicated clearly on your drawings/enquiry and order.

Where ducting panels are required, measure front and back dimensions of the cubicles.

When designing/measuring for cubicles, always allow for tiles and rendering.

Partitions over 2000mm deep may require floor to ceiling columns. Maximum depth = 3960mm.

Disabled units should have 900mm wide doors to meet Building Regulations Part M requirements.

On units less than 1450mm deep, check door clears toilet sanitary ware.

Vanitory units can be designed up to 2800mm without joint. Over this, the joint location(s) should be specified to allow for sinks and plumbing.

For lockers, please supply a plan and elevation drawing.

When planning a washroom, we also recommend that the following factors are considered:

Where possible, actual dimensions are checked on site prior to your order being placed.

Similarly, ensure that the plumbing and electrical installations have been located as the plans.

What ‘extras’ are required such as toilet roll holders, benches, etc? Have these been planned in correctly?

Are there any requirements for matching doors into the washroom? If so Hills may be able to source these.

If in doubt, please call Hills on 01642 469469.

Disability

Regulations

Under the Building Regulations Part M (Buildings Other Than Dwellings), provision for wheelchair users and ambulant disabled people is specified.

Equipment

Hills can provide external sourced equipment for use within disabled facilities alongside the relevant sanitary ware.

Use of this within a correctly designed and installed facility will achieve the requirements of the regulations.

Design Considerations

The design of washrooms should reflect the specific needs of disabled people and include consideration of the number and location of WC’s. Specifically the regulations require that facilities for wheelchair users should have at least the dimensions, equipment and fittings shown [diagram a].

For ambulant disabled people the requirements are different [diagram b].

Standard Cubicle Components

Doors

There are three standard door sizes:

DN1 – 582mm wide: provides flexible opening from 545mm to 560mm width.

DN2 – 635mm wide: provides flexible opening from 598mm to 613mm width.

DN3 – 900mm wide for disabled cubicle applications: provides flexible opening from 863mm to 878mm width.

Doors are supplied pre-drilled for hinges and indicator bolts. When fitted, the door overlaps both the hanging fascia and clashing fascia. The opening size between fascias is variable within 15mm, allowing flexibility without the need to cut panels. Any door may be used with any fascia size to make up the required dimension.

Hanging Fascias

There are two standard sizes of hanging fascias:

HN1 – 100mm wide.

HN2 – 150mm wide.

Hanging fascias are supplied pre-drilled for hinge and leg installation enabling components to be reversible for either left or right hand door hanging.

Where a normal inward opening door would be restrictive, hinges can be fitted to the outside of the hanging fascia to permit outward opening of the door. Optional hardware pack DN required in this instance.

Clashing Fascias

Standard sizes to match hanging fascia:

EN1 – 100mm wide.

EN2 – 150mm wide.

Clashing fascias are supplied pre-drilled for the leg to be fitted and are suitable for either left or right hand situations.

Centre Fascias

Centre fascias match the equivalent hanging and clashing fascias in terms of cubicle width.

CN1 – 200mm wide.

CN2 – 300mm wide.

These are supplied pre-drilled to take both hinges and leg and are suitable for either left or right hand situations.

Partitions

Available in three standard depths:

PN1 – 1524mm deep: provides for a standard cubicle depth of 1550mm, suitable for most situations where a dividing or end partition is required.

PN2 – 1800mm deep: ideal for use with disabled cubicle or when ducting is necessary at rear of cubicle.

Ducting is available to order.

PN3 – 1200mm deep: particularly suitable for changing compartments.

In certain applications, a reduced dimension may be required, for example, where a door and partition are required in line.

In this instance, it is advisable to select the minimum width hanging fascia and door panel. The remaining partition may then be cut from one of the three standard components (edged as required) and fixed with the cut edge next to the wall.

Headrails & Cappings

Supplied to standard length.

RN1 – 914mm long.

RN2 – 1828mm long.

Curtain

R3 – 914mm length.

Curtain rail can be cut down to suit individual cubicle widths where required in preference to doors. 2 x end stops, 8 x nylon runners and 8 x curtain rings are also supplied with the rail and white curtains.

Ironmongery

Relevant ironmongery and other components are supplied to assemble the cubicle system. Standard ironmongery packs are supplied as required – see page 13.

Vanitory Units

Available to complement all cubicle systems within the range, Hills offer expertly crafted vanitory units, lovingly created within its own workshop.

Hills Cubicles and Washroom Systems’ bespoke vanity ‘tops’ are carefully affixed to a previously constructed skeleton frame (manufactured on-site by a contractor and usually constructed from good quality timber).

This allows for quick and easy access to plumbing and the stop cock in case of emergencies – a vital feature omitted by solid block or non-framed constructions.

Much needed storage space for cleaning or washroom hygiene products is also created using this tried and trusted skeleton frame system.

Storage, Handling & InstallationHills Cubicles

To avoid damage and deterioration prior to installation, always follow these guidelines:

Store all panel materials horizontally and level on bearers equally spaced and of uniform height.

Ensure that materials are kept in dry, clean storage facilities, avoiding extremes of humidity and temperature.

When using handling equipment such as fork lift trucks always observe weight restrictions.

When preparing for installation, we recommend:

The installation area is clean and tidy.

Plumbing and electrical work is completed.

All components are fully checked for suitability and to ensure that they are free from damage.

During installation, always follow the general guidelines:

The workspace is kept tidy to prevent accident and injury.

Gloves are worn when handling sharp objects.

Care should be taken when lifting larger panels as these will be heavy.

Ensure adequate ventilation when cutting materials, or using glues and solvent based materials.

Any MFC components which require cutting down on site should be sealed or re-lipped to ensure no future moisture penetration.

Once installed, care and maintenance will be required:

Never use harsh bleaches for cleaning.

Door and panel surfaces can be cleaned with warm, soapy water using a soft cloth or sponge.

Do not use excess water for cleaning, nor submerge components in water.

Lubricate the bolts and hinges with a light grease.

All aluminium cubicle fittings should be washed down fortnightly with a mild detergent and warm water (do not use abrasive materials). Rinse fittings thoroughly afterwards ensuring that surfaces are free and clean from detergent.

Before attempting to fit the cubicle(s):

Familiarise yourself with the site drawings and/or the working drawings supplied with the cubicle(s).

Check that all components and ironmongery are correct.

10. Offer the fascia up to the partition, drill through the partition using the hole in the bracket as a guide and fix using the through bolts provided.

If fitting the Forest range then use the flange on the aluminium extrusion to fix fascia to the partition.

After installation of the fascia, refer to the drawing supplied, mark the appropriate headrail position, pre-drill and fix the headrail.

3. Fix 3 “U” brackets for each partition on the centre line using the rawl plugs and screws provided.

Note that if fitting the Forest range the partitions are fixed to the wall using the flange of the aluminium extrusion already fitted to the partition.

4. Using a 150mm block to support the partition, insert the partition into the brackets.

If the wall is not straight you will need to either put packing behind the brackets or scribe the partition to the wall.

5. Once you have the partition in place then drill through the partition using the hole in the bracket as a guide and fix using the through bolts provided.

7. Fit the leg to the pre-drilled fascias using the through bolts provided.

8. Mark the centre line on the back of the centre fascia and along the edge of any end fascias.

9. Fix 3 “U” brackets to each fascia using the 5/8” screws provided.

If fitting the Atoll range then the wall channel is used instead of the brackets.

11. Fix the leg to the floor using the rawl plugs and screws provided. Cut to length the capping rail and fix through the top of the fascias making sure the door openings are correct.

Any adjustments because of uneven floors can be made on the legs prior to final fixing.

12. Disassemble the indicator bolt and fit to the pre-drilled door.

13. Fix the male half of the hinges to the pre-drilled door edge.

14. The door can now be lifted onto the hinged fascias and locked in place using the anti-lift off screw.

By adjusting the nylon bushes the door can be set to fall shut or fall open. The keep and the rubber buffers can now be fixed to the inside of the clashing fascias.

Any accessories can now be fitted to the cubicle/s. Finally, the cubicle/s can be wiped down using a damp cloth with a mild non-abrasive detergent.
