Today, Rubee and Samuel L represented Hillside at the Premier’s Spelling Bee Junior Regionals. Well done to both students.

We are enrolling now for 2017. If you have a child or you know of any children who are eligible to start school next year, please collect an enrolment form from the office. If you already have the appropriate form, please return it to the office soon. The children must be enrolled at Hillside in 2017 to attend our Early Bird Orientation Program being held early in Term 4.This year is our 90th birthday and plans are underway to celebrate on Saturday 29th

October. This will be an opportunity for students, parents and teachers, past and present to celebrate Hillside’s 90th Birthday. Your invitation to this fantastic birthday celebration accompanies this newsletter. We hope every family can help celebrate this milestone.

Last week we sent home information for our 90th birthday tea towel promotion. This week the students have had fun drawing their picture to go on the tea towel. They will make wonderful memories for years to come.

At last week assembly Patrick, in Kindergarten was awarded the Aussie of the Month Certificate and Kalhoun in Year 4 received the Kindness Award. Two very deserving students who uphold the school values of being Respectful, Responsible Learners.

Aussie of the Month Kindness Award

We are currently revising and updating the Schools Student Welfare Policy. One aspect of the policy is the selection of Presentation Night Awards. A copy of the revised policy is included in today’s newsletter. We have also included “Literacy Tips for Parents and Caregivers for you as well as there are some interesting points on helping your child with their literacy development.

I am sure you have all heard from the children about this year’s pantomime, The Lemonade Kid, which will be performed for your entertainment on Thursday 3rd November. Please book that date in your diary now. Every student is a member of the cast. On the day, there will be a matinee performance around lunchtime and an evening performance. More details to come.

Ten Literacy tips for Parents and Caregivers. Here are some fantastic literacy tips and inspiring ways parents and carers can be more involved in children’s learning.

1. Make books important

Turn off the television and devices and read for half an hour. Talk about what you are reading and/or read with your child, depending on the age group. Sitting in the same room and reading independently can send a strong message about enjoying reading.

2. Visit the Library

Help your children borrow books and borrow yourself. Talk about your choices (authors, topics, book types) on the way home.

3. Make books available

Have a range of books available in your home to read at any time.

4. Write together

Compose greetings together for birthdays and other special occasions, whether a card, letter, email or a puppet show.

5. Set up some correspondence

Arrange for a family member or friend living away from you to correspond with your child by mail or email. Even young children, who may need help reading the letters/emails, will enjoy receiving and sending correspondence. Friends and family will love receiving a return letter or email from your child.

6. Discuss the news

Talk to your children about family events, trips and local and national news events that are appropriate for their age. A strong vocabulary is important for oral language, reading and writing.

7. Help your child with homework

You do not need to be an expert on each task. You can support your child to think through how they should plan their time and complete the task. Just being there, expressing an interest and saying, you want help can make your child feel supported.

8. Be selective about television programs

Try to have a family night and watch something suitable together and talk about the show afterwards. The program might create an interest for future reading or research into a topic.

9. Do things together

There can be lots of talking, reading and writing involved when planning and participating in family events. These include bike rides, cooking, shopping trips, researching for a day out, working in the garden, visiting friends or family or planning an outing to a cinema, museum or public events. Get your children involved in the process.
