Bhadrapada month

Bhadra or Bhadrapada is a month of the Hindu calendar that corresponds to August/September in the Gregorian calendar.[1] Bhadra is the sixth month of the year, beginning August and ending in September. In Vedic Jyotish, Bhadra begins with the Sun's entry into Virgo, and is usually the sixth month of the year.

In lunar religious calendars, Bhadra begins on the new moon in August/September and is the sixth month of the year. The festival of Ganesha Chaturthi, celebrating the birthday of Ganesha, is observed from the 4-10 Bhadrapada in the bright fortnight and is the main holiday of the year in Maharashtra and many other parts of India.

Per Shaka calendar, the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada is reserved for the veneration of the dead. This period is known as Pitru Paksha.

The month of Bhadrapada has some important religious activities, Ganesh Chaturthi being the most important. Haritalika Tritiya - Goddess Parvati did penance to invoke Lord Shiva because she was carried away by his charm and wanted to marry only him. Hartalika is a Puja and fast done by unmarried women to seek husbands like Lord shiva. Married women do this for better life of their husbands.

Ganesh Chaturthi - Ganesh

Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrating the arrival of Ganesha to earth from 'Kailash Parvat' with his mother goddess Parvati/Gauri. His birth celebration is called 'Maghi ganesh chaturthi' or simply 'ganesh jayanthi' which falls in month of January of the Gregorian calendar. The festival falls in the months of August or September of the Gregorian calendar. The festival is marked with the installation of Ganesha clay idols privately in homes, or publicly on elaborate pandals (temporary stages). The festival ends on the tenth day after start referred to as Anant Chaturdashi, when the idol is carried in a public procession and immersed in a nearby body of water such as a river or sea. Thereafter the clay idol dissolves and Ganesha is believed to return to Mount Kailash to Parvati and Shiva.

Rishi Panchami - Rishi Panchami is the fifth day, the next day after Ganesh Chaturthi day in Bhadrapad month of the Lunar calendar. It is a traditional worship of Sapta Rishi.

BHAGAVAD GITA IN BRIEF

Chapter 3

Every body works on this earth, but by working they create bondage. Only a few people who are inclined towards the Great Master perform disciplined action and become united with the Supreme Soul. Just by being indifferent to the fruit of an action, they (KarmaYogis) are rewarded for that action innumerable times by God. By un-attachment alone, Janak, the great king of India, realized his true self.

Shri Krishna says to Arjuna, "By constantly

surrendering your action with all your heart

to my All Knowing Supreme Soul, you fight

this battle without any expectations,

attachment and agony."

The great thing in Karma-Yoga is giving up the

fruit of one's actions. In Karma-Yoga, one

surrenders the fruit; but the question arises:

does the fruit come to one, nevertheless, or

does it not? Thus the Third Chapter says

that the karma-yogi, by giving up the fruit of

his action, does not lose it, but paradoxically

enough, gains it in infinite measure.

Though the actions of the worldly man and

the karma-yogi look alike, the karma-

yogi'sdistinction is that he has given up

attachment to the fruit of his action, and finds

joy in the action itself. The yogi, like the

worldly man, eats, drinks, sleeps. But

his bhavana, his attitude to these actions, is

different. That is why, though there are sixteen

chapters of the Gita left, still, at the very

beginning, the figure of the steadfast seer,

the sthitpragya, the embodiment of self-control

is placed before us.

The essence of the matter is that the karma-

yogi, by surrendering the desire of fruit,

receives endless rewards. The karma-

yogi does his work much better than others,

because work to him is prayer, worship, ritual;

work itself is a mode of worship (puja). I

performed puja. After the puja, I received the

food offered during the worship, as prasad (a

token of Grace). But is this the reward, the

payment for my puja? If a man

performs pujafor the sake of food, he will, of

course, get immediately this part of prasad. But

through the act of puja, the karma-yogi seeks

to get the reward of the vision of God. He does

not estimate his action so cheap that it can

merely fetch him a portion of the food offering.

He is not prepared to mark such a low price on

his action. He does not apply such gross

measure to his actions.

In the Mahabharata war, everybody, at sunset,

leaves the field for evening prayer, but Lord

Krishna unyokes the horses from the chariot,

gives them water, rubs them down, removes the

burrs from their bodies. What a joy the Lord

finds in this service! Picture it to yourself. The

Lord Parthasarathi (the Lord as Arjuna's

charioteer) feeds the horses from his yellow

silk (Pitambar), which he has filled with gram.

And thus you will experience in imagination

the joy of karma-yoga. Take it that every act

is a noble, spiritual, consecrated act. In

the yoga of desire less action, there is a

miraculous power. By such action, both the

individual and society are richly blessed

BHAGAVAD GITA IN BRIEF

Chapter 4

In this chapter Shri Krishna says, “I handed down this imperishable Supreme Discipline, which has decayed over course of time, to the shining sun.” Surprised, Arjuna asks, "Later was your birth, and earlier was the birth of the sun, then how did you teach the sun?" Then,

Shri Krishna says, “Whenever sacred duty (Dharma) decays and chaos (Adharma) prevails, I incarnate myself. I've incarnated myself several times, and you've taken several births, I know all of them but you don't remember them.” It is good to do one's own duty honestly, but at the same time, one should aim at purification of the heart and mind as well. If work is done by completely surrendering to God, then that work becomes a Supreme Action. The course of action is very deep and secretive; therefore, intelligent people become free of the bondage of action by understanding the subtle nature of action properly. Unattached action becomes a sacrificial action. Emphasizing on the fact that all actions done to realize this Supreme Knowledge are the best of actions, Shri

Krishna says to Arjuna,

“You go to the great men who have realized

the True Self to understand this Supreme

Knowledge. These great men will shower

upon you the sacred knowledge of True Self,

if you seek for this Knowledge from them

humbly, bow with due respect in front of

them, and serve them with a devoted heart.

Nothing can purify your heart and mind

more than this True Knowledge. By seeking

shelter in this Knowledge, destroy the doubt

arising in your heart out of ignorance with

the sword of Knowledge. Arise for the battle

performing disciplined action and keeping

your mind stable.

The man who is full of faith (shraddha), who

is devoted, and who has subdued the

senses, obtains this Knowledge. Having

obtained Knowledge, he at once

experiences Supreme Peace. The ignorant,

the faithless, the doubting self goes to

destruction; there is happiness in neither

this world, nor the other for the doubting.”

This world is also a battlefield. Seeking

shelter in the True Knowledge, whoever

fights the inner and outer enemies, will only

be successful.

6 Important Rituals Janmashtami

The festival of Janmashtami holds special significance in India, largely due to the religious and spiritual population present in this subcontinent. This festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna and is celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) in the holy month of Shravan (as per the Hindu lunar calendar). Janmashtami is widely celebrated in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and many parts of South India. Krishna Janmashtami is mostly celebrated on two consecutive days. The first day is celebrated for Smarta Sampradaya and the second, for Vaishanava Sampradaya. If the Hindu calendar lists a single date for Janmashtami, this means that both the Sampradayas will observe Janmashtami on the same date. This year, the festival falls on a Thursday, 24th August, giving people the luxury of time to have a huge celebration of the festival. Since Lord Krishna was born at midnight, the Nishita Pooja Time is also kept then. Like all the mythological festivals, this one also has a very interesting story behind it. Legend has it that the Kingdom of Mathura was suffering under the rule of King Kansa, who was quite cruel. The king loved his sister, Princess Devaki, dearly. When Devaki got married to Vasudeva, a mighty cloud suddenly roared with a divination that the eighth son born to the two would be the cause of King Kansa's death. Hearing this, King Kansa was outraged. He ordered for Devaki and Vasudev to be imprisoned immediately and killed the first six children born to the couple. Fortunately, Princess Devaki’s seventh child, who would later be named as Balram, was mystically transferred, while still in the womb, to princess Rohini in Vrindavan. After the eighth child’s (Lord Krishna) birth, the Gods guided Vasudev to give the baby to Nand and Yashoda in Vrindavan. Years later, Lord Krishna killed King Kansa and freed the kingdom of Mathura from his shackles of cruelty.

Here are some rituals and customs associated with the festival- The devotees of Lord Krishna perform the Krishna Abhishekam, which includes offering milk, ghee and water as bhog to the deity. Many of them observe a fast during the day of Janmashtami, being allowed to have only a single meal the day before. Many Pandits believe that the rules followed during Ekadashi fasting should be followed during Janmashtami fasting as well. Those fasting, are not allowed to consume any grains, so they go phalahar, which means consuming only fruits and water. People visit temples to seek blessings from Lord Krishna. The idol is bathed with milk, honey and water, dressed in new clothes and laddoos are offered to the deity. A devotional atmosphere is prevalent everywhere, and specially inside the temples. Apart from chanting of mantras, there is also a ritual in which 108 names of Lord Krishna are chanted, while showering the idol of the Lord with flowers. In many places, decorated swings are tied on trees, as the child God loved to swing in a jhula. Devotees swing the baby idol of the Lord sitting on a jhula, in the temples, as it is considered auspicious. ‘Parana’, which means breaking the fast, should be done at an appropriate time. The fast is broken after sunrise on the following day of Janmashtami, when both Rohini Nakshatra and Ashtami Tithi are over. If Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra don't get over before Sunset then fast can be broken during daytime when either Ashtami Tithi or Rohini Nakshatra is over. Some people like to break their fast with charnamrit and dhaniya panjiri, while others like to eat kheer and poori-chhole. Other food dishes prepared also include kasar (panjiri mixed with dry fruits and nuts), aloo ki kachodi, and traditional milk-dishes. The festival of Dahi Handi is a custom ritual, celebrated the day after Janmashtmi in Maharashtra. As part of the festivities, people stand on top of each other to make a human pyramid and break a pot filled with dahi, mishri and makhan that is hung from a certain height. This is done as homage to Lord Krishna, lovingly known as the Makhan Chor, since he used to steal butter as a baby.

PUPPIES FOR SALE

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the Eyes of a little boy.

“Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”

“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, “these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.”

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. “I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?” “Sure,” said the farmer.

And with that he let out a whistle, “Here Dolly!” he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.

The little boy pressed his face against the

chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.

As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared; this One noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid.

Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up....

“I want that one,” the little boy said, pointing to the runt.

The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.” With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said,

“You see sir, I don’t run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands.”

The world is full of people who need someone
