Eight cases of small-pox were report- ed near Gowen, Montcalm county, last week, and a pest house has been put up in which to lay the atHicted. J. C. The Lowell pilgrims in Dakota write home favorable reports of Dakotaland. They generally like the country and think the prosjiects for making money there are good. Edward Miner, of Walker township, sold a three year old sheep the other day that weighed 140 pounds. That's a big- ger sheep than nanny we've seen this way. Who hath woe? The Buchanan Record tells this awful hen yarn: "Dr. Herman set a hen on liieg^s and she hatched out I t chickens and bad one egg left. He put this under another hen and u<*t another chicken from that." And now which hen is that last chick- en's step mother? An old resident it: Grand Uapids ar- rived there forty years ago with just 'il cents in his pocket. The other day he counted up his wu'ilth and found he'had :J5 cents and two beer tickets. And still there are thoiiHaiids of young men in the eastern Stales to-day who can't lie in- duced to come west. A Monroe street man wants to know "if anybody owns the young-ones that go yelling through the streets at niKht." We don't object to answering anv fair, reasonable question, but we don't like to have folks sling such a question as that at us. The fruit growers of Washtenaw Co.. in solemn conclave convened, resolved that the peach crop this year would not IH* more than one-third as large as that of last year. They also reported that the hard winter hurt the Crawford vari- ety most and Hill's Chili least. But wliat do they know about peaches in Washtenaw county? The peach belt is out this way. The occupants of the wooden build- ings west of Graham's block have had to move out to give the workmen a chance to begin preparations for the new brick block, spoken of in our last. Herm Zeigler's market is now just east of the Boston store, and Devendorf has moved his sewing machines into Miss Bosworth's millinery store. The Evening News excursion guide book for 1881 is what the ladies would call "too sweet for anything." It is beautifully, artistically and elaborately gotten up. There will be three excur- sions under the management of Mr. Brearley of the B',veiling News, the first July 2, the second July 14, the third Ju- ly 21. The round trip fare is only ^20.- distance 20()0 miles. Send 80 cents to W. H. Brearley. Detroit, and get a copy of the Guide Book. And then harness up and go to the White Mountains. Mr. J. E. Business boonis. Detroit News nays:—Kent county far- mers are biting at a harmless looking hook, baited with an agency for "the waKon tongue sup|iorting company of Detroit." The farmer agrees—in writ- ing of course—to take and sell 24 of the supiKirters on shares, and when they ar- rive he finds he has signed a contract for the whole lot at $5 apiece, but if lie isn't too saucy about it the dealer lets him off for an even $100. What is cheek? Bah! flint is putty in com|Nirison. Mr. P. 1). Sneatheii, of South Boston, left at this office last week a large bas- kefful of long keeping apples, which for size, soundness, freshness and lla- vor. we have never seen equalled at this season of the year. These beauties might have been seen at this office last week. Now, there is nothing left of them except the sweet memory that lingers around the many cores tossed out of the window. If Mr. Sneathen will accept our thanks as cheerfully as we received thr fruit there will be no trouble. The teachers association of Northern Kent held a pleasant and successful meeting in this village last Saturday. Several excellent papers were read and discussed, and many interesting ques- tions were called up that drew out a free exchange of views and opinions, beneficial to all concerned. A two days' session would have lieen none too long and in future the programme should lie arranged, if possible, so as to include two good evening lectures and four half day sessions. It takes nearly one whole day to fairly "break the ice" and get ac- quainted. The second day would see much more accomplished than the first. For a short session the association did remarkably well here. There was ex- cellent music, and the discussions were of a character calculated to enlighten and benefit. The secretary's report will be found in this number of the Jol'K- NAL. THE TKACHKR.S. Olllenil Kejiort uf Their l)olii;;s. The Teachers' Association of Northern Kent Co.. convened at 9 A. It is stated by parties who claim to know that one of the principal reasons for the firm be- coming so heavily involved is that with other parties, they have been engaged in certain lumber si>eculations. which proved disastrous. Mr. S. A. Kennedy, attorney for the eastern linn, hearing of these mortgages, yesterday levied upon the stock of hardware, which is now in the custody of Deputy Sheriff Gee. awaiting the action of the courts. Some Snuix. The Flint Citizen tells this cheerful story: On Tuesday last, while Mr. L. E. Hill of Davison was plowing a piece of mucky land upon his farm he was sud- denly attacked by a huge black snake which came at him savagely. Mr. Hill disengaged himself from the plow, and ihe only weapon he could find to defend himself with was a long rail. He made several blows at the snake and com- menced to retreat backwards, but the reptile dodged bis aim and followed him. After retreating a tew step* Mr. Hill heard something behind him and look ing round beheld another snake almost as large: he struck at this one and it also gave battle. Mr. Hill fought des- perately for a few moments and finally killed both snakes. The largest, he said, measured seven feet in length, and was as large as a man's arm below the elbow the other was only a few inches shorter. 1.1ST ' ) F LEITERSremaining in tliu Post-oltlce at Lowell. The teachers association of Northern

Kent held a pleasant and successful meet ing in this village last Sa turday. Several excellent papers were read and discussed, and many interesting ques-tions were called up that drew out a

f ree exchange of views and opinions, beneficial to all concerned. A two days' session would have lieen none too long

and in fu ture the programme should lie arranged, if possible, so as to include

t w o good evening lectures and four half

d a y sessions. It takes nearly one whole day to fairly "break the ice" and get ac-quain ted . The second day would see m u c h more accomplished than the first. For a short session the association did

remarkably well here. There was ex-cellent music, and the discussions were

of a character calculated to enlighten and benefit. The secretary's report will

be found in this number of the Jol'K-NAL.

which came at him savagely. Mr. Hill disengaged himself f rom the plow, and ihe only weapon he could find to defend

himself with was a long rail. He m a d e several blows at the snake and com-

menced to retreat backwards, but t he reptile dodged bis aim and followed him. After retreat ing a tew step* Mr. Hill heard something behind him and look ing round beheld another snake almost

as large: he s t ruck at this one and it also gave battle. Mr. Hill fought des-perately for a few moments and finally

killed both snakes. The largest, he said, measured seven feet in length, and was

as large as a man's a rm below the elbow the other was only a few inches shorter .
