Starfish Class This week In Starfish class, we have been looking at different sports activities and our story focus has been ‘Peppa Pig’s Sports Day’. We have discussed

how taking part in sport and being active can affect our bodies, such as making our hearts beat faster, becoming out of breath and making us feel tired. The children shared their experiences of different sporting activities, some comments included, “I like football the best,” “I love going swimming,” and “My Mummy ran a half marathon, she won a medal.” The children have been busy developing their fine and gross motors skills whilst creating their own medals to wear and taking part in physical challenges in the garden. They showed great

perseverance and resilience when trying to balance and walk on the stilts and have used vocabulary such as, “highest”, “furthest” and “fastest”. We have discussed being part of a team, trying our best, working together and being a good team player. We have been exploring the Olympic and Paralympic games. The children were interested to look at a world map to discover where we live in relation to Japan, where the games will be held next month. We

looked at some pictures of opening and closing ceremonies, including London 2012 and the children enjoyed sharing their own experiences of visiting London. We have explored the Olympic rings, using vocabulary to describe the circles, such as “round” and “like a wheel”. The children had great fun creating their own Olympic ring inspired art. Well done, Starfish Class!

Seahorse Class This week in Seahorse Class, we have looked at the Beach, Sun Safety and Families. We began the week by listening to Kipper the Dog: The Seaside. After the story we explored the vocabulary tide, coastline and seaside. We then discussed what objects we would take to the beach.

As a class, we created a list which included a mobile phone, bucket and spade, Lilo and beach ball. On the mark-making table the children wrote and illustrated their own beach list. On the play dough table, the children imagined having a seaside picnic and made cupcakes, sandwiches and ice creams. Later, we discussed how important the sun is for our bodies, but also how we should stay safe whilst out in the sunshine. The children’s ideas included: wearing sun cream, drinking water, playing in the shade and wearing a cap. During the story, Kipper rescues his friend from the water; this led to a conversation about who we would call if we got into trouble at the beach. The children knew to dial 999 but

were unsure who to ask for. Using the internet, we found out we needed to ask for the Coastguard. While researching the Coastguard we discovered pictures of light houses and discussed how they help ships in the sea. Throughout the week the children have designed buckets and spades and ice creams using a variety of resources. Our next story of the week was Commotion in the Ocean, as we read the book the children identified rhyming words. The children were challenged to go on a word hunt, finding words that rhymed and writing them in the correct column. In the water tray the children had to fish for coins and match the rhyming words. The children have been drawing family portraits which has led to discussions about how families are similar and different. In Maths, the children have been consolidating their addition and

subtraction skills by solving problems and matching the answer to specific colours. The children then coloured a variety of seaside pictures using the corresponding pencils. Using the loom bands and geo boards, the children have worked together applying their fine motor skills to create 2D shapes. We have explored halving and doubling objects and discussed the number patterns within these concepts. They have also ordered number tiles, starting with different numbers to continue the sequence. In PE, the children have been practising their throwing skills. In teams, they have taken turns to throw bean bags into hoops, scoring points when their bean bags landed within a hoop.

Oyster Class This week in Oyster class, we have started looking at explanatory texts. We shared a text about how ice cream is made and picked out the features. We sorted information into categories using sub-headings and we have written some seaside captions. In maths, we have continued working with numbers up to 100. We have been comparing and ordering numbers and finding 1 more and 1 less.

In science this week, we have been thinking about seasonal change. We worked as a group to create collages showing how a tree changes across the seasons .

Seagull Class

Year 2 have been busy bees this week and have worked extremely hard. They have started to learn about Grace Darling and the RNLI as well as reading the fabulous book The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and creating their own story maps and storyboards to sequence the story. On Tuesday, they commemorated Windrush Day by creating Caribbean flags, creating their own island and some children made a 3D turtle to symbolise the path over the Atlantic that the Windrush ship travelled. PE this week has

involved children teaching each other a new skill and using the outdoor Gym. Next week, we will start making our pebbles and bracelets ready for Enterprise day.

Heron Class

This week in Year 3, the mystery of our shoebox project was revealed and we began our designs. The children are applying their knowledge of the rainforest to create a mini version in a shoebox. We began a new Maths unit looking at turns and angles and improving our accurate measuring. To help develop our creative writing, we have been focusing on improving our vocabulary choices. This has enabled us to write some lovely setting and character descriptions, as well as a Kennings poem about the rainforest. Well done for another hard working week in Year 3, Heron class. Best wishes, Mrs Smith, Mrs Calvy, Mrs Allen and Ms Hardy

Curlew Class This week, Year 4 began exploring different types of triangles and various polygons in their Maths lessons. In English, they began

planning a formal letter and in R.E. they learned about the beginnings of Hinduism and had a fun P.E. lesson learning how to use the new gym equipment in the playground. We also started making our products as part of our 'Make £5 Grow' project and we can't wait to start selling them to the other children in the school.

A great week, Year 4, from Mrs. Emmings and Mrs. Edwards

Sanderling Class

This week, Year Five marked Windrush Day by learning about the history of the Windrush generation. As well as developing our understanding of this topic through discussions and drama activities like freezeframing, we felt it was important to widen the scope of this topic and to make it about celebrating all people and treating everyone equally. For this reason, we decided to create a whole-class piece of art which aims to make anyone who looks at it feel welcome to our school. We have had a lot of fun working together on this project and it has felt like a very positive experience, bringing the whole class together. We look forward to sharing our artwork with everyone next week.

Avocet Class

This week in Year 6, we dedicated a lot of our time to commemorating the anniversary of the SS Empire Windrush, which disembarked in Tilbury 73 years ago on Tuesday. The children watched videos of the journey, docking and the aftermath, and learnt about the racism faced by the Caribbean people

after arriving in England. Much fun was had on Wednesday afternoon. Following on from learning about Claudia Jones in

the morning; in which the children learnt about her life and how she established the Notting Hill Carnival; they made their own colourful and imaginative carnival masks using a variety of materials. In RSE this week we covered the extremely important subject of 'Your body is your own' and learnt about inappropriate behaviour and

what to do in a situation where personal space is compromised.

In RE, we thought again about God's Grace and considered various scenarios in which forgiveness could be hard to do. Much discussion was had on this subject. As promised - here are the finished William Morris prints that we completed last Friday afternoon.

Well done, Year 6 for working hard again this week and have a lovely, restful weekend. Miss Eakins

On Tuesday 22nd June, Hinguar commemorated Windrush Day. 73 years ago, the SS Empire Windrush disembarked at Tilbury Docks. It had travelled 8000 miles

from the Caribbean with hundreds of passengers heading to the 'Mother Land' to begin a new life; with promises of prosperous job opportunities to help rebuild Britain following the end of World War 2. The children learnt about the journey the passengers undertook and the racism they faced on arrival. In Year 1 we shared a PowerPoint of basic Windrush information and then talked about how it must have felt to be made to feel unwelcome just for being different. Then we picked some children to make comparisons, identifying ways they were the same and ways they were different - we imagined being mean to someone because they were not the same as us and talked about how that would make us/them feel.

We talked about kindness, acceptance and individuality. Year 2 learned about the initial immigration of 500 people to Britain. They made some Caribbean flags and talked about the different patterns and imagery. They also designed their own Caribbean Island and related this to their own personal thoughts of what the young immigrants may have thought coming to Britain was going to be like. Some children created a 3D turtle to symbolise the journey the families took over the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, we discussed an image of two hands together each representing a different ethnicity and discussed what this symbol meant to them. The children were so engaged and respectful of each other's ideas and contributions.

Year 3 discussed Windrush Day during our assembly and shared a PowerPoint. The children were very interested to learn about the journey taken and we compared it with how far we had travelled to go on holiday. This led us to discuss racism and discrimination that unfortunately still exists today.

Year 4 shared a PowerPoint and discussed the invitation extended by the government after the war. The children were fascinated and had lots of questions about the commonwealth and the empire. They were disgusted to hear how the immigrants from the Caribbean were treated on their arrival in the UK. We discussed how even though people look different from each other we are all still human beings. They were also very interested in the history of the Notting Hill Carnival and how it would not be a part of British culture without the arrival of the Windrush generation. We then answered comprehension questions.

Year 5 firstly completed a Windrush comprehension. There was lots of discussion using photos as stimulus, use of Newsround and clips about Floella Benjamin. We watched her read her book, 'Coming To England'.

In English, we freezeframed moments of a Windrush arrival and added thought bubbles. We also started a piece of collective artwork celebrating diversity.

Year 6 had a whole Windrush week! We watched videos about the Windrush and heard accounts from people who migrated here in the

1950's and 60's. We considered how children who travelled to England might have felt and wrote imaginary postcards to family

members living back in the Caribbean. We learnt about Claudia Jones and how she

created the Notting Hill carnival to celebrate cultural diversity. We made carnival

masks, Caribbean flags and used atlases to plot the journey of the SS Empire Wind

Student of the Week

Student of the Week Awards are presented in class to celebrate a

child’s success in their learning. This may be through a strategy

they have applied, a way of working that reflects a ‘can do’ attitude

to achieve or a personal milestone achieved.

Birthday Celebrations This week we celebrated Rebeka’s and Maya’s birthdays.

The Fish Award

Children or staff caught demonstrating our ‘Fish Philosophy’ are nominated for the Fish Award.

Each class will have a winner selected from the ‘fish bowl’ and will receive a certificate of
