Hino Trucks’ extended engine warranty is now providing an industry best - 5 years, 250,000 miles coverage! All 2011MY trucks are covered under this warranty at no additional charge. In addition to the standard items covered by Hino Trucks’ past engine warranty, the new coverage has been expanded to cover key components such as fuel injectors, the fuel injection supply pump and the turbo charger. Additionally, Hino Trucks is extending the injector warranty on its 2008MY, 2009MY and 2010MY trucks to 5 year, unlimited mileage coverage. The 5 year period starts from the original warranty start date.

“Our engines have been recognized as the medium duty market leader for quality, durability and reliability. 2 HINOCONNECT 2010-Issue4

Hino Goes Head-to-Head against the CompetitionThe Offense – Hino’s J.D. Power award winning, 2010 ATD Medium Duty Commercial Truck of the Year – aka the 2011 model 268 truck.

The Defense – 2011 Freightliner M2 and 2011 International (IHC) Durastar 4300.

In some head-to-head competitions, there is no clear winner. This is not one of those times! During our Evolution Tour, Hino Trucks knew the only way to

truly demonstrate Hino’s superior features and benefi ts was to have dealers get behind the wheel and let them decide for themselves! Here are the results…..

Standard features vs. Optional – Hino has the advantage offering many features as standard that other OEMs offer as optional with an up charge - radio (AM/FM with CD Player), Air Conditioning, max frame rail strength and tilt and telescoping steering.

“Hino has some competition with the Freightliner, but once you get to breaking down the basic equipment vs. the add on’s the Hino will far outweigh the Freightliner.”

Door opening and ease of entry - When you are exhausted from a long day at work, even easy tasks can feel diffi cult – getting back into your Hino 268 will not be one of them. The wide, 80° door opening means that getting into the truck is always easy. A door opening of only 62° (Freightliner) may cause your cab entry to be more diffi cult.

“Cab entry is far superior on the Hino versus both competitors with the IHC as the worst.”

Turning Radius: A greater wheel cut improves maneuverability and gives Hino the advantage getting into and out of tight locations with its 55° wheel cut. When put to the test, the Hino performed the turning circle with ease while the International (50° wheel cut) was almost impossible (less than a hand full of dealers actually got it through the turning circle without having to back up.

“The ride and drive demonstrates several key quality features of the Hino truck. The most noticeable was the turning radius on the Hino versus the International truck. I personally had to back up three times with the IHC and one time on the Freightliner. The Hino obviously made the turn at a relatively good speed with no need to back up.”

EPA10 Emissions Technology• Hino chose Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

to meet the EPA10 Emissions Regulations and is the only conventional medium duty truck to meet them without the use of credits.

• International selected Massive EGR, which does not meet the EPA10 requirement. Their system also produces excessive heat and causes soot to build up faster, requiring more frequent periods of regeneration and the likely potential of excessive engine wear.

• Freightliner, Ford & PACCAR all went the SCR route; however do not meet the EPA10 requirement.

“The Cummins ISB engine requiring line boring for overhaul in essence makes it a “throw away” engine at the end of its’ useful fi rst life. This is a big point especially if the engine for whatever reason has an out-of-warranty problem that is related to a premature failure.”

B50 Life - An estimate of when 50% of the engines of a certain type will require major repair - often referred to as “average life to overhaul.”

• Hino 7.8L (Hino J08-E) – 500,000 miles• International 6.4L (MaxxForce) –

350,000 miles• Freightliner 6.7L

(Cummins) – 400,000 miles

The fi nal knock out came in the form of a 5-year, 250,000 mile warranty that just could not be beat! Competitors offers this warranty for a $2,500 - $4,000 premium.

“I was amazed at how much better the Hino handled over the IHC. The Freightliner was not that bad, but can be sold against by presenting B50 life and warranty comparisons.”

And the winner is... Hino! As dealers stepped out of the cab, it was clear who had evolved as the leader. “Hands down, I feel Hino is best medium duty conventional truck on the market today, dollar for dollar.”

** All quotes included are from dealers who participated in the Evolution Tour.

FedEx Ground has established a solid reputation as the leader for on-time delivery performance, technological innovation and fl eet safety in the ground small-package marketplace. In fact, FedEx Ground holds the distinction of being the fastest-growing transportation company in US history and has consistently posted double-digit growth.

Vital to that is their network of Pickup and Delivery service are independent contractors who own their vehicles and are paid based on service. Nick Ciardiello is one of those service providers. In the 23 years since Nick Ciardiello purchased his fi rst FedEx Ground route, he’s formed corporations and partnerships with other FedEx Ground independent contractors and now owns and operates 22 routes, maintains a fl eet

of 40 vehicles and employs 46 people. In his 40 vehicle fleet, 34 of those are Hino trucks! Nick’s base company is NC Enterprises out of Metuchen, New Jersey. As an experienced professional looking for opportunities to grow his business, Nick has helped fellow independent contractors start up their businesses. In doing so, Nick passes on his Hino experiences and why they too should choose a Hino

FedEx Keeps Him “Grounded” truck. He explains, “Equipment is the main backbone of this business. If your truck is broke down, your business comes to a halt. That is when you rely on the quality of a truck backed by Toyota. You may pay more and work harder in the beginning, but in the long run with a Hino truck you are not paying for repairs, and that keeps you on the road and keeps your business running.”

In 1989, Nick bought his fi rst Hino from a friend that worked at Villa Marin (a former Hino dealership). He had that truck for 10 years! In 1998, he met Cid Citarelli of Schwartz Truck Center and formed a lasting business relationship that has seen over 34 Hino’s delivered.

FedEx Ground recently honored Nick as “Entrepreneur of the Year” recognizing him for his business development, customer service results, safety record and community support. Of the nearly 12,000 independent contractors supporting the FedEx Ground network, Ciardiello, was recognized for best exemplifying these traits in 2008-2009.

We thank Nick for his dedication to Hino Trucks and wish him continued success.

r The “Measuring Show”The New Model Truck Product Conference (aka “The Measuring Show) is a members-exclusive annual event held this past fall where leading chassis manufacturers presented critical information about product upgrades and new product launches for the upcoming model year and beyond. Hino participated in the chassis update session to a well-attended crowd of distributors and upfitters and presented our recent accomplishments, changes to the 2011MY trucks and also future product development plans for the 2012MY. Participants also got a sneak peak at a few details of our soon to be released 2012MY Class 4 and 5 COE.

Cheers!Hino Trucks continued their push into the beverage market by participating in both InterBev and National Beer Wholesaler Association (NBWA). Both shows are exclusive events attended only by industry professionals. During InterBev, owned and operated by the American Beverage Association, Hino displayed a 338CT. Dominik Beckman, Marketing Manager for Hino Trucks attended InterBev and explained, “This year’s InterBev gave us an opportunity to meet and network with some of the most prestigious names in the beverage industry.” For the first time, Hino Trucks participated in the 73rd annual NBWA Convention during the Product Demonstration Showcase. It was an introduction to Hino for many of the attendees and was an excellent opportunity to tell our story and advance our beverage industry sales.

It’s Easy Being GreenEspecially at the Green Industry Equipment Expo! In a shared booth with Toyota Fleet, Hino Trucks presented their 2011MY 338 product with a dump body. In landscaping, a truck is more than a means to get the job done, it represents an owner/operators’ business! That’s why during this event Hino demonstrated that under the well-defined exterior appearance of a Hino truck is a workhorse design with all the power, strength, and versatility a grounds maintenance crew needs.

Hino Trucks held their second National Skills Contest on July 21, 2010 at the Training Center in Novi, Michigan. This year was bigger than ever with eleven contestants competing for the coveted title of National Skills Contest winner and a trip to Japan. (See all participating contestants to the right).

The Skills Competition brings together Hino dealer service technicians from across the country that have achieved Master Elite Technician designation and puts them head-to-head against each other in varying simulated service-related situations. The Master Elite Technician designation is the highest certifi cation a Hino truck technician can attain. To reach this advanced status, technicians must successfully complete fourteen Hino Training Courses and all six Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium/Heavy Duty Truck test series certifi cations.

“The Master Elite competition isn’t just about competing, it puts a spotlight on our dedicated technicians and highlights their professional skills,” said George Daniels, Vice President, Service Operations for Hino Trucks. He added, “Our hands-on training courses are designed to provide real life conditions to help prepare our technicians to support our customers. We are proud of their accomplishments in the fi eld and in this competition.”

During the competition, each contestant was given a series of problems the truck was experiencing, and were challenged to diagnose and fi x each program within the four hour time limit. After each problem was diagnosed the contestant had to complete a service report, which they were also judged on. The problems were designed so the contestant had to complete them in the correct order.

After four hours of intense competition, Greg Zubek of Chicago Mack Sales broke away from the pack to be the ultimate winner for the second consecutive year! Greg is a Journeyman Technician and has been with Chicago Mack for over fi ve years.

Runner up, Michael Willoughby, has been at Rush Truck Center of Oklahoma City for 14 years. Michael commented, “I want to thank my family at home and at Rush for encouraging me to participate in the challenge. This year’s competition was more complex and challenging and I’m very happy with what I accomplished this year and am proud of Greg’s win. But he better look out, we’re going to win it next year!”

2010 EV LUTI N TOUR N TOUR

Hino Trucks took its message on the road by hosting a multi-city dealer tour throughout the month of October, showcasing the 2011MY lineup. For over 300 dealer personnel, it was an opportunity to get behind the wheel of not only Hino’s latest offering, but to experience what the competition has to offer.

Why “Evolution” Tour? The Evolution Tour was about providing our dealers with the tools to sell Hino Trucks as a premier brand! The general session reinforced our Evolution message:

• Our Industry has Evolved.• Our Competition has Evolved.• Our Customers have Evolved.• Our Product has Evolved.• We MUST Evolve to Stay ahead of the game!

Sumio Fukaya, President and CEO of Hino Trucks, reinforced during the opening session that “Educating our dealers is key to improving our market share and positioning Hino as the premier brand in the industry. Now that our 2011MY is on the road, we must work to maintain this energy level and take advantage of the opportunities within our reach!”

Dominik Beckman, Marketing Manager for Hino and Mike Mansfi eld, Used Truck Manager for Hino also presented during the general session with information on new internal programs. This year, Hitachi Capital was an added welcome to our general session lineup and was their fi rst introduction to our dealer network. The fi rst program announced is a partnership with WebTech Wireless to establish a Hino custom telematics solution for 2012MY. Telematics is the ability to remotely communicate with onboard vehicle systems and human machine interface (HMI) devices. Pilot testing for Hino’s solution began this past October and will continue through January 2011. (Stay tuned for additional details in the next issue of HinoConnect).

Hino Trucks has also designed a new Certifi ed Pre-Owned Warranty Program in conjunction with Premium 2000+™ that sets Hino apart from the competition with a coverage that is unique to the industry. A Hino Certifi ed Truck undergoes a signifi cant qualifi cation process and is then backed-up by America’s fastest growing Dealer Network and an industry leading warranty. (For more information go to www.hinopreownedtrucks.com).

After the opening session, dealers braved the elements and headed outside to learn more about how Hino stacks up against the competition. During the 2009 Clear Difference tour, dealers got behind the wheel to compare the 2010 and 2011 model year Hino trucks. This year, we provided dealers the opportunity to experience the Hino difference fi rst hand, while driving the 2011MY Hino, plus an

Page 7: HINO - McCormick Motorsmccormickmotors.com/media/documents/Hino Connect_2010 Issue 4.pdf · Hino Trucks’ extended engine warranty is now providing an industry best - 5 ... innovation

International and Freightliner. After test driving all trucks, one dealer stated that “Hino is far superior. The Freightliner is our strongest competitor in respect to appearance and ease of handling. International of course has the largest market share but after driving it, I can’t understand how anyone would want to purchase it. We as a dealer need one in our daily lease fleet to take customers for a ride and drive comparison!!”

In addition to the Ride and Drive, dealers were also able to get up close with the competitors’ trucks during a Walk Around session. The trainers were able to point out features on the International and Freightliner, and then explain the Hino advantage. Many dealers were surprised to see firsthand the complexity of International’s Massive EGR system and how much larger the radiator and cooler are. During the Freightliner Walk Around, dealers learned that Hino has 20 more horsepower at no additional cost. One dealer commented that “The walk around comparisons really helped to distinguish the primary differences between your product and the competition. Well done!” In addition to the outdoor ride and drive events and competitor walk arounds, dealers spent valuable face-to-face time with

our partners during a Meet and Greet session. These partnerships are the cornerstone of a reliable product. Thank you to our partners for their continued support!

Overall, the event was a positive

reinforcement of Hino’s commitment to enhancing product technology, keeping up with competitive advantages, and educating our dealer team of the latest innovations around the industry. Thank you to everyone that attended and for creating an environment that was very conducive to learning, networking, and having a good time! As Hino continues to evolve as a Premier Brand in the industry, leading the pack with standard features, cost of operation and technology advancement, only one question remains…

are you part of the Hino Evolution?

Introducing Your 2010 Sales Competition WinnersDuring the 2010 Evolution Tour, a Sales Competition was held in each city. Dealer sales people from all over the country competed for a $1,000 price and the chance to compete at the National Sales Competition on February 22, 2011 in Phoenix, AZ. New Products / FeaturesAre there any plans to offer an air ride cab? There are no plans at this time to offer this feature.

Are there any plans to offer different steer tires to up the front axle rating on the 338 to 14K? Our current offering of 11R tires only provides a front axle capacity of 13,200 lbs. In order to increase the front axle capacity to 14,000 lbs, the trucks needs 12R tires, which currently causes an interference issue with our wheel wells and will have to be addressed prior to offering the 12R tires.

What is the status of the extended front frame and 14,200 front axle options? We currently offer a 14k front axle which is rated at 13,200 lbs. due to the tire capacity ratings. We are evaluating alternatives that may allow us to offer a full 14K rating on the 2012MY. The front frame extension design is still being evaluated and also anticipate being able to offer this option as a package with the stationary grille on the 2012MY.

When will Hino put a factory mounting location for a CB radio? There are no plans to add this feature.

Is Toyota working on a Tundra cab and chassis for 14,500 and 19,500 GVW that would be marketed through Hino? No, there are no plans for the Tundra to go up in size at this time.

When will Hino have an engine at least 300HP and 800 Torque for the 338CT applications? There is no set time table on the addition of another engine.

Are there any plans to offer a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engine? If not, will Hino allow an aftermarket company to modify our Hino engine? There are no plans to offer a CNG version of our engine. Hino would have to approve any modification done to the engine or it would negate the engine warranty.

Has Hino approved the engine to use B20 bio-diesel without any effect on the warranty? Yes, Hino approved the 2011MY vehicle for the use of up to B20. 2010MY and older are approved for up to B5.

Cabover Engine TrucksWhen do you expect to release the new cabover trucks? We are planning to do the world launch of the COE at the NTEA Show in March 2011. Dealers will be able to order the new diesel COE starting in April, for delivery in August. Dealers will be able to order

Questions & Answers

8 HINOCONNECT 2010-Issue4

the diesel-hybrid version in August/September for December delivery.

Will there be a gas engine for the new cab-over? No, the COE will have the J05 Series diesel engine.

Hino PartsCan you explain the recent difficulties in obtaining whole engines or engine internal parts from Hino? Recently our engine supply plant had extremely high global demand causing extended lead times on engines and some underlying components. Over the past 4 months, Hino has been focused on improving the availability and streamlining the production process. We expect a complete return to normal availability by January 1, 2011.

Does Hino recommend any additives and if so what kind? Hino does not recommend using fuel additives to enhance fuel quality or cetane ratings as stated in the owner’s manual. However, in the extreme cold areas during the winter months, it is okay to use a quality fuel anti-gel additive, such as Racor’s Diesel Winter Plus+ PN ADT4555.

Will Hino be adding any of the stainless steel trim offerings to the new truck options list? The 2011 stainless steel product offering has just been completed and was on display at the Baltimore Tow Show. The most commonly requested items in this collection will be reviewed for addition to the optional equipment offering for new truck orders.

Where are Hino’s hoods made? 2011MY hoods are made in Ohio. 2005-2010MY hoods are made in Indiana

WarrantyIs there a more in depth Warranty Coverage Sheet that tells you more than the basic description poster? We are updating the 2011MY Warranty Sheets with the 5 year / 250,000 mile extension. This extended warranty covers everything the standard 3 year / unlimited mileage warranty covered, plus injectors, the injector pump and the turbo.

There are pre-owned trucks and then there are Hino Certifi ed Pre-Owned Trucks. Hino Trucks has designed a new Certifi ed Pre-Owned Warranty Program, in conjunction with Premium 2000+™, that will set Hino apart from the competition with a coverage that is unique to the industry.

A Hino Certifi ed Pre-Owned Truck undergoes a 112 point comprehensive inspection process and is then backed-up by America’s fastest growing Dealer Network and an industry leading warranty. This ensures that when your customer buys a Hino Certifi ed Pre-Owned Truck, they will know exactly what they are buying – quality. All Class 4 thru Class 7 Hino trucks 2005 and newer – and under 250,000 miles are eligible for coverage.

Mike Mansfi eld, Manager of Used Trucks for Hino explained, “Our team is eager to bring this custom designed warranty program to our dealers. Only Authorized Hino Dealers can perform the inspections and offer this program. We are committed to providing a warranty that instills confi dence in our trucks and service support network. In turn, this program allows

our dealer network to provide the industry's fi nest selection of performance-proven trucks to serve customers needs.”

Buying the right pre-owned truck is a smart investment and now there is the Hino Pre-Owned Truck website to support our national sales efforts! (www.hinopreownedtrucks.com) This dedicated site is designed to showcase HMS’ national pre-owned inventory and match customers with a dealer and vehicle that suits their needs. In addition to the national inventory listed on www.hino.com, dealers will have an opportunity to upload dealer-owned vehicles (regardless of brand) onto their own Hino dealer subsite! This site is an excellent area to educate customers on the benefi ts of owning a Hino Certifi ed Pre-Owned truck.

The Hino parts team arranged for an afternoon of go-kart racing at Fastimes Indoor Carting in Indianapolis. The event was a fantastic team building afternoon for the VoMac Truck parts sales team and included a valuable sales strategy meeting with their parts management team. Our second quarter lap winning dealership, who is also our current “Race Leader”, was Allstate State Sales and Leasing. The parts team at Allstate is vigorously working with their district parts manager to plan their team building and sales meeting event.

Check out the current top 20 highest performing dealers listed to see if you are next to be in “Pole Position”. If your dealership’s position is not listed, talk to your district parts manage to find out how to “Get in Gear”. The Quest For the Cup runs through March 31, 2011, for rules, rewards or to check your current position visit www.hinonet.net under the “Parts” tab, and then click on “Promotions”.
